Sound Tracks to My Life

I wonder if there is such a thing as a good addiction, because I’m sure as hell addicted to music. When I think of music I think of an escape. I can be doing anything at any given moment and put in a pair of head phones and be completely in another world. Without music, my day is completely empty and boring. I wake up to music; I go to school listening to music and even eat to it. Music is a source of joy, stress, tears, camaraderie and fulfillment for me. What would life be without music? The world would be a very quiet place. Music for me is a reminder of how things once were an indication of how things are, and a view of where society is headed. Music is a direct reflection of the picture of society. Music can be a way to deliver messages, a poetic medium, a fine art, or nothing more than a source of entertainment. No matter what it is used for, music is the perfect art and my life would be that much less complete without it. Two songs come to mind when I think about all these sources of completeness for myself. First is “Proud to Be an American” by Lee Greenwood and “You and Me” by Soldier of Jah Army.

I often think of the words of Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA” in which he states:”And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free....” I wholeheartedly agree. My heart swells with gratitude to God and this wonderful land where, regardless of whom I am or what my goals are, I have that priceless gift of freedom. Freedom to pursue my dreams. Freedom to worship. Freedom to get an education. One thing that many people take for granted in this country is their freedom, life, and pursuit of happiness. Every time I listen to this song, I think of what an amazing life I have been given and that I am very lucky to be living in such an incredible place. My father, , served thirty years in the military and dedicated his life for the freedom of every American walking on this soil. My brother, , is currently serving in the Navy and wants to also follow the same footsteps as my father. My cousin, Mathew Romano, served five years in the Army and served in the War of Iraq. Matt put every aspect of his life in danger to keep what Americans have every day. Knowing he was putting his life in danger going over to Iraq at such a critical time for the United States, he never thought twice about it. Between my Father, Brother, and cousin, are three men that want/wanted to dedicate their lives in some way keeping the United States a safer and better place to live. I would like to use this quote by Elmer Davis to correlate everything that I just said. “This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.”

When I listen to this song I get goose bumps running all through my body knowing that every word of this song is only because we have people willingly sacrificing their lives for my freedom. I find a sense of pride and joy knowing I can relax my head on my pillow at night to that. Lee Greenwood never served in the military but when he wrote this song, he did it because everything inside him believes in his military and the country of the United States. This song was never popular to me, until after, the deadly attack on the World Trade Centers in New York City. It was after that incident that I began to realize that the world I live in, is only the way it is, because of the people that fight for it.

Lee Greenwood describes the emotion involved in American self-perception in the song by saying, "I'm proud to be an American. For at least I know I'm free." Freedom is the founding pillar of the American self-perception. Self-perception is the culmination of how one views oneself. It was this song where I began to realize about the place I lived in and how important my life really is and the roles I can play in it.

“I open my eyes each morning I rise, to find a true thought, know that it's real, I'm lucky to breathe, I'm lucky to feel, I'm glad to wake up, I'm glad to be here, with all of this world, and all of its pain, all of its lies, and all of its flipped down, I still feel a sense of freedom, so glad I'm around,” lyrics of an extraordinary reggae group known as “Soldiers Of Jah Atmosphere.” When I listened to this band for the first time I was completely overwhelmed with the amount of relief and stress it took from my shoulders. It leaves you in a mind state of complete relaxation. I fell in love with S.O.J.A instantly after listening and I’ve yet to criticize such incredible men.

The lyrics come from a song known as, “Open My Eyes.” I have very strong passionate feelings for this song solely due to it being words through the way I perceive my life and world. One thing that is most important to me other than family is my life and how I live each and every day. I listen to this song over and over often and it’s like they fulfill every word and emotion I have towards my outlook and perception of the world.

“The day I am gone, and the day that I leave, I'll never regret one minute of life, I've learned from the joy, I’ve learned from the tears, I've fought through the dark, now I see the light.” I quote these specific lyrics from the song because it’s everything my mind and conscience believes in until that day the Lord decides to take me into his arms. I strive to live every day of my life like it could possibly be my last solely because everyone in this world has one chance and one opportunity. My life has consisted of a large quantity of up’s and down’s. The down’s including the loss of my Mother’s parent’s, the suicide of my Uncle off a bridge in New Jersey, pregnancy dilemmas, friendship loss, regrets, and living by myself for a few periods in time. These all sum up things that have made me a stronger person today and more self-accepting with what I have learned from rough periods in my life. “Open My Eyes” reminds me of the goals I have accomplished in life and the vast amounts of self satisfaction my body holds so tightly. Experiences and the deception of the real world are two things, that have, and always will shape the way my outlook is on life. This song is one I have always been in love with and it has opened me to many thoughts and reasoning of my accomplishments. My limits and expectations from day to day are endless and I will continue to vibe and relax to S.O.J.A, “Open My Eyes” until my days to live are there no more. Music is by far one of the most important things in my life and I wouldn’t be the same person if it wasn’t something available to me from day to day. It makes my mind and world go round and I can’t live without it. I opened my strongest feelings to two important songs in my life, “God Bless the U.S.A,” and “Open My Eyes.” These two songs have played an important role in much of my understanding towards the world I live in and the life I’ve chosen to live. “God Bless the U.S.A,” being an inspirational song to me and also much reality to actually being an American, and “Open My Eyes,” being more of a relaxed view and understanding of things. Music is my escape from any sort of situation in the world to any obstacle my mind runs across. It is through tons of music that much of myself feelings I hold are derived from. Music kidnaps my conscience while listening and there will never be a day that I live without it. Thanks to Lee Greenwood and Soldiers of Jah Atmosphere that I am so appreciative of the music I listen to.

Junichi Masuda

...the position that I have the most admiration for is the sound designers and music composers. The music in a game can be as important as the visuals and the story in my opinion; helping to paint a vivid picture of environments and moods to aid in storytelling. Junichi Masuda is the world famous sound composter for game freak, and is best known for his creation of sound and music in the Pokémon franchise of games. The first term that comes to my mind when referring to the work of Junichi Masuda is “nostalgia.” I think back to playing “Pokémon Gold” with my best friend Jack when we were younger. After a long adventure, accompanied by inspiring, adventurous, and sometimes creepy ominous tracks, you reach the Pokémon league, the final challenge for a Pokémon trainer. Standing before your final challenge the track “Pokémon League Theme” produced by Mr. Masuda himself plays in the background. Starting off slow with two notes alternating, slowly and ominously, the sounds build. The track grows in volume and intensity before leveling off and methodically repeating in the background. The reason this is so effective in capturing the mood of the scenario, and who Masuda himself is a genius in regards to sound design is how important the music is to this particular scene. Subtle examples such as this one may go undetected by the average gamer, but attempting to imagine the final hurdle in the amazing Pokémon games without these tracks in the background is simply impossible. Another trait...

In Pursuit of Music

...“an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.” Music is all around us each and every day. Whether it be a three note jingle on a television station, or to the tracks you listen to in your car. I believe music is an integral part of our lives and to the human experience. It crosses cultures, boundaries, and races; life, death and everything in between. The fact that music can be so powerful continues to inspire and motivate me to pursue a career in the field of music. We’ve all had times when you hear a song and it seems to invoke some kind of feeling or emotion inside of you. You may experience the feeling of “goose bumps” throughout your skin. The song playing might even take you back to another time. I’ve always found things like this intriguing about music. To be able to portray and convey, or even bring out any emotion; thru sound or music; is a pretty powerful thing. As in all art forms there is a sense of creation. Essentially creating something from nothing, in effect, keeps us coming back for more. From an artistic point of view, an art is a form of creation that allows the artist to express oneself freely. That is a gratifying experience in itself. One of the most profound things I find about music is that it has the ability to bring people together in a sense of unity. Where race, hate, and other societal differences seem to evaporate beneath the wave of sound rolling through...

Cocktail Hour Number One Analysis

...My fiancé and I are on a mission, and it’s one we take very seriously. It involves approximately 100 gigabytes of music, a subscription to Spotify, and an ever-developing love and appreciation for new and old music. In an effort to save money, and also give us peace of mind, we opted to create the soundtrack to our wedding versus paying for a DJ. Though there are obvious benefits to hiring someone, the prospect is somewhat daunting and just a bit on the risky side to this audiophile. What if he plays the Celine Dion version of “All the Way” and not the Frank Sinatra one? And although DJs are well-versed, by profession, in popular music and cult classics, there is no telling if he’ll let his musical preferences dictate the ambiance of...

Bob Dylan Paper

...describe the amount of sound that came out the speakers after playing Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited? The many sounds that make up this remarkable piece of what one could only describe as artwork is a phenomenal mix of instruments and vocals to produce a sound that is of no other. Dylan combines everything from a simple harmonica (which he makes sound anything but simple) all the way up to electric guitars, drums, acoustics, tambourines, banjos and even what sounds to be like a Kazoo in track 7! His background falls under influences coming from the blues with an emphasis on delta blues, and a strong country back ground as well. He ties these older sounds together with the new sounds of today’s rock and roll to create even flowing and cohesive piece of work. His music is made for the youth and even in a time when folk and country music is something we would relate to our parents, his music brings out a young vibrantness that no person, old or young, could ignore. His overall CD encompasses many mixed emotions. Dylan seems to incorporate personal stories of his own life along with random stories which when combined produce songs of happiness as well as desperation to the modern world. His CD doesn’t carry a main story line, and in fact really sounds like a mix of random feelings and emotions that he kind of slapped together into one cohesive motion. His first track “Like a rolling stone” pulls the listener in with an instant hook made up of an arsenal of sound which includes electric...

Personal Narrative: The Moment Before A Gun

...The moment before the gun goes off, there is a steady silence. I can feel the increase of my heartbeat. My palms are sweaty. I take three steps back from the line and wait for the sound of a gunshot. The wait seems long. The gun goes off and I place my left foot forward and suddenly I am doing what I know best. I have been running for as long as I can remember. When I was a toddler, I spent my church nursery days, running around in circles, as the other children chased me. They eventually stopped from exhaustion, but I carried on, fascinated with the act of running. Then, in elementary school I would race my male classmates at recess and I loved it so much that I started running for my local track club in second grade. I initially began running...

...then goes into a more sarcastic bashing of his new album. It is obvious that he greatly dislikes his new album that he is reviewing. The style of this review was very casual, which fits the style of the type of people who would buy his album. You can see that his review is casual when looking at the sarcastic tone of the review in general. You can also see that the style of his writing is casual by looking at how the reviewer mentions the more crude examples of Lil Wayne’s work. In order for zcamp to write his review, he had to have listened to the entire album he is reviewing and know of Lil Wayne’s other albums to compare. Since he compares the album he is reviewing to Lil Wayne’s previous works, he had to know what his other albums sound like. He also mentions a drink in his review that Lil Wayne made up called “sizzurp”. Zcamp talks about how Lil Wayne went to the hospital with violent seizures after consuming too much of his “sizzurp”. To know this information, he must follow the news of Lil Wayne. I do not follow or listen to Lil Wayne, and I did not know about his “sizzurp” or his hospitalization. Zcamp also includes specific examples of phrases and trends that Lil Wayne sang throughout his album. The reviewer had to intensely listen to all the songs and look for the connections of what Lil Wayne was saying from song to song to include that his review. In another album review that I read of Whitney Houston’s album “I Look to You” by Ann Powers, the style is a little...

...I researched being a live sound technician, or also commonly called a sound engineer, because it is one of the music careers I am interested in. I have been considering this career for a couple years now, but keep going back and forth between jobs. I have always been passionate for music, and have always been fascinated by concerts and what it takes to put it all together. I went to my first rock concert when I was 14 and have been going to several shows a year since. In the past two years I’ve been paying attention to the different staff at venues and just seeing what they generally do. One of the jobs I’ve always been intrigued by was the people working the sound boards before and during the sets. One concert my father even pushed me to talk...

Music, Poetry, Passion..

...It's been a long and twisty road for Love?, having started recording the album in 2009 with an original release date for the project set for January 2010 to coincide with Lopez’s latest film “The Back-up Plan”. However following the lack of success with lead single Louboutins, Lopez and Sony Music Entertainment decided to end their ten year partnership leaving the fate of Love? with Island Def Jam, which boasts an impressive roster of A-list songwriters and producers (such as RedOne and Lady Gaga), as well as guest performers. Here’s a track-by-track rundown: 1. On the Floor (Ft. Pitbull) This moderately-catchy track, aimed for the dance floor, became J.Lo’s first Top 10 hit in eight years. It’s one of the album’s strongest singles, having a bit of a capricious vibe, containing a sample of Los Kjarkas’ song Llorando Se Fue, which was made popular in the Kaoma single Lambada. Lyrically, it follows the typical ‘get down and boogie’ formula but sound wise, it’s unlike anything on the radio, definitely putting it ahead of the game and screams summer. 2. Good Hit Lopez pointlessly cuddles with auto-tune for this near-rap song in which she repetitively asks, “Don’t you wish I was your boo?” It seems a bit forced and dull yet further reminding listeners that she brought ghetto fabulousness to Pop. 3....

Saratoga Memories

... There is that certain environment that calms down the human psyche into a state of bliss…mine is Saratoga. Every summer, my family and I spend our August in upstate New York at the historic Saratoga Race Track. My family has many connections in the horse racing industry and we share a love for the thoroughbred. I have visited Saratoga every summer for the past fifteen years. The feelings I experience spending my summer mornings on the backstretch of the racetrack are indescribable and as I close my eyes it is like I never left… Standing up against the back fence looking out over the mile track as the sun is rising in the horizon; I can feel the warmth of the day’s first rays hitting my forehead with the contrast of the brisk early morning breeze. Lying in front of me is almost one hundred and fifty years of history…the same dirt and luscious grass tracks year after year – the places where legends are made. The smell of the well-manicured grass and dirt is mixed with the smell of the horse to create that Saratoga smell. I glance down the rail at the first turn and see a magnificent horse turning into the backstretch. He glides along the rail gracefully, under wraps as the jockey soon begins to go to work. The horse and the jockey seem to be one as they can communicate without words through the jockey’s hands on the reins. The thumping sound of thunder gets louder as the horse approaches me in a full gallop. His back legs violently throw the dirt from underneath...

Once More to the Lake

...E.B. White Once More to the Lake (1941) One summer, along about 1904, my father rented a camp on a lake in Maine and took us all there for the month of August. We all got ringworm from some kittens and had to rub Pond's Extract on our arms and legs night and morning, and my father rolled over in a canoe with all his clothes on; but outside of that the vacation was a success and from then on none of us ever thought there was any place in the world like that lake in Maine. We returned summer after summer--always on August 1st for one month. I have since become a salt-water man, but sometimes in summer there are days when the restlessness of the tides and the fearful cold of the sea water and the incessant wind which blows across the afternoon and into the evening make me wish for the placidity of a lake in the woods. A few weeks ago this feeling got so strong I bought myself a couple of bass hooks and a spinner and returned to the lake where we used to go, for a week's fishing and to revisit old haunts. I took along my son, who had never had any fresh water up his nose and who had seen lily pads only from train windows. On the journey over to the lake I began to wonder what it would be like. I wondered how time would have marred this unique, this holy spot--the coves and streams, the hills that the sun set behind, the camps and the paths behind the camps. I was sure that the tarred road would have found it out and I wondered in what other ways it would be desolated. It is strange...
