For many countries, their development has been affected by colonialism, when the land was governed by another entity. The importance of colonial history was evident in Sudan in January, 2011 when a referendum asked voters of southern Sudan to decide between separating from Sudan and maintaining a unified Sudan. Nearly 99 percent of eligible voters cast their ballot for independence thereby ending the 55 year existence of the largest nation in African (Hanzich, 2011). An extremely diverse country in which governmental decisions have favored the Arab population of the North, Sudan’s existence has been marked by strife. For all but 12 years, Sudan has been torn apart by civil wars. Since the colonial period ended, Sudan’s central government could not use violence, oppression, or peace agreements to minimize colonialism’s impact and establish a sense of unity in the country. Thus, the creation of South Sudan stems from colonization which confined opposing factions within one political boundary and created a history of civil war. The artificial political boundaries established by Sudan’s colonial powers—Egypt and Great Britain—brought together diversity for which Sudan’s central government could not build unity. I worked side by side with Travis Correll in many of the Division II SEC Basketball games across the Southeast Region. The Southern Conference fired Travis Corell in the shakeup stemming from allegations of a multimillion-dollar investment fraud scheme. John Guthrie, the SEC Supervisor of Basketball Officials for more than two decades, was fired for unspecified reasons the day Correll resigned. The NCAA also released referee Jason McNeil that same afternoon. So, in 1999, Gary Oden of Wellton, AZ and Bill Brandt of Brawley, CA, set the wheels in motion, and a group of area cattle producers organized to take Brawley Beef, LLC, from idea to reality. Through their efforts, the first cattle were harvested and processed in December 2001 at the new packing plant in Brawley, CA. Even with the combined efforts of the group of cattlemen, making Brawley Beef work has not been easy. The nation was still in a daze from the September 11, 2001 disasters when the first cattle were harvested. At the same time, the firm found itself in the middle of a battle over the anti-dumping tariffs placed on the U.S. beef exports to Mexico. Magnificent stories that carry themes and lessons that are seen by some, but lost to others. In the short story “The River” by Mary Flannery O’Conner a similar approach was used. O’Conner uses the powerful symbolism and brilliant metaphor of The River to craft a story that dives deeply into the themes of Faith and Salvation that express her personal convictions on the secular and Christian world views. This is especially true in Harry’s baptism scene as well as the final scene that take place at the river. In the story “The River” Harry’s Parents seem to show little or no interest in him. Their life is consumed with entertainment and the social life. Harry is either left alone to fend for himself or stuck with baby sitters for long periods of time. On one particular occasion Harry ends up going to a religious gathering at a river with one of his babysitters Mrs. Connin. There he is taken into the water and baptized by bevel the preacher. ...The Santa Ana Winds “ The Santa Ana” by Joan Didion and “Brush Fire” by Linda Thomas offer complete separate views to a similar topic, the winds of Southern California. In a first person narration the authors write of the wind from her own experience of living in California and from her own perspective, shedding light on two very different aspects of the Santa Ana winds. Physically, both pieces of literature are different. Each story reflects its own writer as “The Santa Ana” has lengthy paragraphs, chock full of information. Didion is an American Author known for her literary journalism and use of logos. At a glance of the piece, it lists of reasonings and details is clearly visible. Each paragraph is filled with descriptions and examples of the author’s point. Didion cites others like Raymond Chandler and uses lots of facts to prove her point of the winds destructive nature. “Brush Fire” has noticeably shorter paragraphs and uses much more imaginative diction like in paragraph four where she describes the wind’s journey as “....arrives in the foothills of southern California in hot, bone-dry, ten to forty mile-per-hour gusts that lower the relative humidity to three percent” in comparison to Didion’s description in paragraph three, “warmed as it comes down the mountain and appears finally as a hot dry wind”. This includes ground shaking, ground displacement, liquefaction, fires, and tsunamis (Girty, 2009, Chapter 7). During an earthquake there are varying degrees of vibration of the ground, dependent on the magnitude of the earthquake. This violent movement of the soil can compromise the structure of buildings or other structures made by man, causing them to crumble to the ground and crushing anything, or anyone, that may be in close proximity. If some sort of structure, made by man or by nature, happens to lie upon a fault line, the ground displacement of the foundation of the structure can also cause immense damage by ripping apart the land. In some instances, where soil is highly saturated, such as coastal areas or low elevation, liquefaction is another hazard. When the ground shakes, any present liquid will rise up through the soil and make sinkhole conditions where structures can sink right into the ground. With this kind of destruction, comes the hazard of fires as well. During a violent earthquake, electrical and gas lines can be destroyed and exposed to ignition sources that can ignite and cause fires that may be inaccessible and be extremely destructive.
