Tombstone Case

...For the exclusive use of D. Wang, 2015. 9 -2 1 1 -0 6 3 REV: SEPTEMBER 27, 2012 TIMOTHY A. LUEHRMAN DAVID LANE Tombstones Capital markets offer corporations varied ways to raise funds. This Note presents summary information for a selection of corporate securities issued during 2009-2010 following the financial crisis of 2008–2009. They include three issues of senior unsecured notes, one floating rate note, one common stock offering, and one convertible note. The issuers are Microsoft, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Norfolk Southern, IBM, Ford Motor, and Cephalon. Selected supplementary data on the issuers are summarized in Exhibit 1. A short glossary of terms appears at the end of the Note. All three senior unsecured note issues were sold in $1,000 denominations and paid interest semiannually. For each bond or note, the semi-annual interest payment equals one half the stated coupon rate times the $1,000 face amount. Following the same convention, the annual yield to maturity for such instruments is conventionally calculated and quoted as two times the semi-annual internal rate of return of the bond’s market price and promised future payments of interest and principal. Microsoft Notes On September 22, 2010, Microsoft Corporation issued $4.75 billion in senior unsecured notes in four series, each paying a different coupon and maturing in 2013, 2015, 2020, and 2040 (see Exhibit 2). The company’s disclosures noted that the proceeds would be used for “general corporate...

Germany Auto Industry

...12/12/2013 International Business Environment Assen Spassov | Automotive Industry in Germany | Automotive Industry in Germany | Germany’s balance of payments in 2012 Amid a challenging external environment, Germany’s current account surplus grew distinctly in 2012 to 7% of gross domestic product (GDP), which was only slightly below its previous record high in 2007. On the export side, this rise was attributable to the German economy’s ability to hold its own in markets outside Europe despite the significant slowdown in the pace of growth in 2012. This is partially due to the attractive product range offered by German exporters, although the euro’s lower external value also played a role during the period under review. Germany’s strong export performance vis-à-vis non-euro-area countries greatly outweighed the weak demand that its enterprises faced in the euro area. The import side, too, contributed considerably to widening the current account surplus. In particular, the uncertainties emanating from the crisis in the euro area prompted German firms to hold back on their domestic investment, which adversely affected imports. While noticeable progress has been made in terms of correcting the current account imbalances within Europe, the 2012 surplus underlines the fact that, owing to the greater uncertainty it has engendered, the crisis has also hampered efforts to reduce the overall German current account surplus. The increased desire...

Standard Chartered Bank Customer Satisfaction

...Chapter 1: Introduction SME finance is the funding of small and medium sized enterprises, and represents a major function of the general business finance market – in which capital for different types of firms are supplied, acquired, and costed or priced. Capital is supplied through the business finance market in the form of bank loans and overdrafts; leasing and hire-purchase arrangements; equity/corporate bond issues; venture capital or private equity; and asset-based finance such as factoring and invoice discounting. Small & Medium Enterprises, commonly known as SMEs, are relating to three types of sectors,( Service, Business & Industry ) typically labor intensive industries with relatively low capital intensity. For a country like Bangladesh where labor is abundant and capital scarce, SME plays a significant role in employment generation, poverty reduction and overall economic growth of our country. SMEs may not always have the same access to banks and financial institutions as larger firms. Banks are reluctant to expand their SME credit portfolio because lending to SMEs was not considered to be attractive and profitable undertaking. SMEs are regarded as high risk borrowers because of their low capitalization, insufficient assets and inability to comply with collateral requirements of the banks. Administrative costs are also higher because of close monitoring and supervision and credit management of the SME portfolio. Despite all these facts, banks and financial institutions...

Case - Alibaba Group

...organizational structure in tandem with changes in strategy. Jack Ma, Chief Executive Officer of Alibaba Group, stared through the fog at the cable stays of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge whistling past on his drive to the offices of Taobao ("hunting for treasures"), Alibaba's online marketplace for Chinese retailers and consumers. The longest transoceanic bridge in the world had a long gestation period: the feasibility studies took a decade. and even after their approval the plans changed to connect the northern end of the bridge to Jiaxing, rather than the Jinshan suburb of Shanghai as initially planned. When the bridge was opened to the public just over a year earlier, in May 2008, it cut the trip between the cities of Ningbo and Shanghai and southern Jiangsu province from 400 kilometers (km, equivalent to 249 miles) to just 80 km (50 miles), boosting economic integration and development in the Yangtze River Delta, which was home to 72.40 million people living in almost 100,000 square km of land comprising Shanghai, Zhejiang province, and Jiangsu province.? Ma couldn't help but smile to himself as he thought of the obvious similarities between the Hangzhou Bay Bridge and the Alibaba Group of companies. Just as the proposed bridge changed form as its plans progressed, the Alibaba Group evolved over an equally long period from its founding by Ma and a small group of friends in 1998, to the point where it now captured approximately one half of business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce in...
