After the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Americans became fearful that the Japanese people living in their country participated in the attack and were planning more from “the inside.” It was only once they were needed during the war that the men were allowed out of the camps to fight as American soldiers. Revoyr writes, “Frank and his friends were such great American soldiers, ironically, because they were Japanese- because of their sense of duty, and integrity, and faith in each other” (116). The fact that any Japanese man would fight for the United States against Japan after having their families and themselves treated as livestock, proves that these people were true Americans. Frank and his friends might have been Japanese by heritage but their loyalty was to the United States and they thought of themselves as Americans. When Jackie starts to explore this history—her aunt has asked her to find the kid, Curtis Martindale--she finds herself more and more intrigued. Why did old Frank Sakai leave the store, or the $38,000 in proceeds from selling it, to this young African American? As she begins her exploration, Jackie meets Lanier, a young black man who works in a social service center in the neighborhood of the store. Lanier does wonderful things for the kids in the neighborhood, and he knows some of the history that Jackie is pursuing. She very quickly learns that Curtis is one of four black kids who were left to die in the store’s freezer during the turbulence of the Watts Riots in 1965. He lived from about 1632-1705 and composed work in his later life that was ahead of his time, and anticipated the later style of Rococo. Giordano's work "Birth of the Virgin" was one of his most revered works. Using oil on canvas, Giordano experimented with the use of light and layers of perspective in this work, showing two tiers of the biblical scene that are connected in some respects, yet separate in their actual realms, to evoke a powerful yet peaceful mood just after the birth of the Virgin Mary. The overall experience of seeing this work in person is captivating because of the multiple dimensions and complexity of the image. The scene of the painting is set just after the birth of the virgin Mary, and she is shown being cared for by a group of attendants, with her father looking on close by, and her mother resting off to the side. The lines in the painting contribute to its complexity in that there is a horizontal line organization that separates the top tier (the heavenly realm) from the bottom tier (the earthly realm) of the painting. This horizontal line shows a difference between the realms, but the two worlds are also connected by the lines in the painting, especially in an emotional sense.
