...the culture wasn't easy for Julia. She faced discrimination from the children at school because of her Hispanic ethnicity. Julia always loved stories since she was little she adored hearing them and also telling them, but is when she came to this country she developed her writing skills. Hispanic culture is more oral expression than written, is not very common for a child or teenager to keep a daily journal but it is for an American. Thankfully to this experiences in her life she was able to transformed them into wonderful written pieces. Since Julia went through the experience of adapting to a different country, culture and language, in this poem she tries to portray what Spanish feels to her and she wants her readers to know this in English with a hint of Spanish, which to me is like a cherry on top. This poem is about the feelings and emotions a person has with two different languages and how hard sometimes is to adapt. We see that when she mentions "the sound Spanish wash over me like warm island waters as I say your soothing names". Spanish feels like home; warm, inviting, comforting, here she relates her country to names in Spanish that make her feel at home and also gives me a glimpse of what...

Panic

...Diana Yoon Professor Shaffer English 200 4 September 2012 Panic In my senior year in high school, I took Spanish 4, highest level of Spanish you can take in my school. The class was taught by a pretty cool teacher, DP. It was a long and hard course but because of DP, I learned a lot of different exotic Spanish cultures and interesting facts I would have never knew about. Well, with our cultures unit, we had to research different Spanish speaking countries’ immigration history and have a five minute oral report on how people have lived before and after immigration. My assigned country was Cuba and I knew nothing about this tiny country. Everyone was assigned on different dates and I was to go on last. I was happy that all the smart people got to go first because then I can ask them for help. Couple of days later, half of the people went and all received C’s and below. My good friend, Victoria, she got a D, and she was one of the smartest people in my class. When I asked her and many of my friends who went before what their report was about, they said they have no idea what they did wrong. I panicked and automatically thought ‘I am going to fail’. Also, how was I to pretend to be a Cuban immigrant when I know nothing of Cuba? And even talk Spanish fluently for five minutes straight? With all those questions alarming in my head wildly, I just froze and thought about my next move. Was I to just blab nonsense about what I know about Cuba- which is nothing, and receive a...

...Spanish Culture Location: Southwestern Europe, bordering the Bay of Biscay, Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, and Pyrenees Mountains, southwest of France Spanish Society & Culture Spanish Family Values The family is the basis of the social structure and includes both the nuclear and the extended family, which sometimes provides both a social and a financial support network. Today, it is less common than previously for family members to work in a family business, as personal preferences are important and university education is general. The structure and the size of the family vary, but generally, people live until longer lives, have fewer children than before, and fewer people live in their homes with extended family. Familial networks have become less tight. The greatest changes have occurred inside families, between men and woman, and the parents and children because the values that inspire these relations have changed. Religion in Spain The majority of Spaniards are formally Roman Catholic, although different religious beliefs are accepted. During the history of Spain, there have been long periods of where different religious groups have coexisted, including Muslims, Jews and Christians. Still some traditions manifest more like a cultural event than a religious one. During Holy Week, many participants of the processions wear peaked, black hats as the sign of a penitent and walk barefoot, carrying a burden of some kind. Religious history...

Maldonado V. City of Altus

...Commissioner, Holmes Willis, received a complaint that because Street Dept. employees were speaking Spanish, other employees could not understand what was being said on the City radio. Willis informed the City's HR Director of the complaint, and she advised Willis that he could direct his employees to speak only English when using the radio for City business. Plaintiffs claim that Willis instead told the Street Dept. employees that they could not speak Spanish at work at all and informed them that the City would soon implement an official English-only policy. On June 18, 2002, one of the senior employees, Tommy Sanchez, wrote a letter to the HR Director and the City Administrator, Michael Nettles, expressing concerns about the new policy. Sanchez felt that employees had not been given proper notice of the new policy under the City’s Personnel Policies & Procedures Manual and proper procedures were not followed when implementing this policy. Sanchez reported that Willis had told him that Hispanics speak Spanish because of “insecurities” and that Sanchez too would “feel uncomfortable if another race would speak their native language in front of [him]". The letter also requested an investigation into discrimination charges in accordance with the City’s Manual. In July 2002, an English-only official policy, signed by Nettles, was implemented. English was to be used in all forms of communication (oral and written). Exceptions were during...

Baybayin

...Although the baybayin had spread so swiftly throughout the Philippines in the 1500s, it began to decline in the 1600s despite the Spanish clergy’s attempts to use it for evangelization. Filipinos continued to sign their names with baybayin letters throughout the 17th, and even into the 18th century, though most of the documents were written in Spanish. Gaspar de San Agustín still found the baybayin useful in 1703. In his Compendio de la lengua Tagala he wrote, “It helps to know the Tagalog characters in distinguishing accents.” And he mentioned that the baybayin was still being used to write poetry in Batangas at that time. But in 1745 Sebastián Totanes claimed in his Arte de la lengua Tagala that, Rare is the indio who still knows how to read [the baybayin letters], much less write them. All of them read and write our Castilian letters now. However, Totanes held a rather low opinion of Philippine culture and other writers of the period gave a more balanced view. Thomas Ortiz felt it was still necessary to describe the Tagalog characters in his Arte y Reglas de la lengua Tagala of 1729 and as late as 1792 a pact between Christians and Mangyans on the island of Mindoro was signed with baybayin letters, which is not surprising because the Mangyans never stopped using their script. Many people today, both ordinary Filipinos and some historians not acquainted with the Philippines, are surprised when they learn that the ancient Filipinos actually had a writing system of their...

Spanish Cultural Celebrations

... Tradition is defined as the transmission of beliefs, celebrations, customs, ideas, legends, practices, and stories. These beliefs and celebrations are passed from one generation to another usually in oral form. Traditions help Hispanic cultures connect with their people, family, community, and friends. These traditions are practiced and carried out in both Latin American Countries as well as the United States. A piñata is a very high colored party ornament that is made from cardboard or clay. Most are made out of cardboard because once made with this you can make into any shape, flower, favorite animal, or superheroes. It is believed that the famous traveler Marco Polo witnessed the Chinese creating wonderful figures of animals that were covered in paper and then strung up with harnesses. These figures were then used by these people to celebrate the New Year. Then as a result Marco Polo brought the customs of these celebrations back to parts of Europe where the idea spread to many cultures vastly. When this form of celebration was spread to parts of Spain the celebration of lent was then turned into a “fiesta”. The Spanish then celebrated the occasion called “The Dance of the Piñata”. They then used a clay object for the piñata called the “la olla” which is the Spanish word for pot. The piñata tradition is highly popular in Central America as well as other Latin American countries such as Columbia, Ecuador, Porto Rico, Peru, and Venezuela. For children in Central America...

Freud spent three years working in various departments of the hospital and in 1885 he left his post at the hospital to join the University of Vienna as a lecturer in Neuropathology. Following his appointment as a lecturer, he got the opportunity to work under French neurologist Jean Charcot at Salpetriere, the famous Paris hospital for nervous diseases. So far Freud’s work had been entirely concentrated on physical sciences but Charcot’s work, at that time, concentrated more on hysteria and hypnotism. Freud’s studies under Charcot, which centered largely on hysteria, influenced him greatly in channelising his interests to psychopathology.
