Next, parents feel devalues themselves because deep down in their heart, they don’t feel right about their way of punishment. Often they spank in desperation because they don’t know what else to do, but afterward feel more powerless when they find it doesn’t work. When it comes to parenting children, there’s a big difference between punishment and discipline. When children make mistakes, they rely on parental intervention to help guide and teach them. Under Children Act 1989, it states that duties to local authorities, courts, parents and other agencies in the United Kingdom, to ensure children are safeguarded and their welfare is promoted. Children are important asset of our country as they are our future leaders and all the hopes are pegged on them. Thus, it is vital for the adults to protect and be more careful in teaching them or setting as an examples since young people see their parents, family, friends teachers and sports or activity coaches as largely positive influences in their lives. Furthermore, hitting also devalues the parent-child relationship. According to Dr. Sears from Academy of Pediatrics, corporal punishment puts a distance between the spanker and the spankee. This is because children learn that when you have a problem you solve it with a good swat. A child whose behavior is controlled by spanking is likely to carry on this mode of interaction into other relationships with siblings and peers, and eventually a spouse and offspring. Hence, some children are forgivingly resilient and bounce back without a negative impression on mind or body, for others it’s hard to love the hand that hits them.

...that spanking is used as a great way to keep children under control. Studies show that most children who have been spanked were more likely than (non-children) to be deviant. Children that been spanked demand immediate satisfaction of their wants and needs, they become frustrated easily, have temper tantrums and lash out physically against other people or animals. “A major study at Tulane University, published in Pediatrics controlled for other factors that have been found to contribute to aggressiveness in children, including the mother’s depression, alcohol and drug use, spousal abuse and even whether the mother considered abortion while pregnant with the child”. “ The unfortunate thing is that spanking not only doesn’t work, it is very unnecessary”. Joseph L. Wilson Jr 2/28/2016 In an article entitled “Spanking: The Case Against It” published on www.consumer.healthday.com February 28, 2016, Rob Waters expresses that spanking your child can cause physical & also mental harm to the Childs well-being. Spanking

...Should Corporal Punishment be Banned in Homes? The spanking of a child, also known as corporal punishment, by their parent(s) is one of the most common forms of disciplinary action used to date. Although many people have different ideas of what spanking really is, the term universally means “striking the child on the buttocks or extremities with an open hand without inflicting physical injury with the intent to modify behavior.” (Bai) Some parents and researchers would say that spanking one’s child is a form of child abuse because it is practiced with the intent of causing physical pain to the child. However, the use of corporal punishment is necessary because a child who is not disciplined will not learn the difference between right and wrong and should not be against the law for parents to use in their home. When I was five, I got a “spanking” from my father for biting a family member. During and after the spanking I cried and was very upset with my father for what he had done. I thought it was unfair and “mean”. But like my parents, a recent survey estimated that ninety-four percent of parents with children age’s four to five spank their children occasionally. (Larzelere) While some call it discipline, others believe it is a form of violence. Research shows that corporal punishment leads to more serious problems than just getting your feelings hurt. In many cases when a child is spanked, it can leave a lasting impact and cause poorer relationships between a child and the...

Spanking Is Not Okay

...many negative effects from the outcome of a parent spanking his child. There have been many people who have attempted to get physical punishments outlawed, and in some cities, they have been successful. In other areas, it is up to the parent or guardian of the child to choose how they would like to deliver the punishment. The topic of spanking seems to arouse strong opinions on both sides of the topic. While some parents believe that they must resort to violence, in order to send the message to their child, that the behavior that he is involved in will not be condoned, other parents seek alternative methods of punishment. Spanking a child is just one of many forms of punishment that a parent can implicate on his child. By choosing spanking as the method of punishment, the child is learning to use violence as a way to obtain a certain outcome. Soon-to-be parents should be aware that spanking their child has been shown to lead to aggressive behavior, fear of adults, and anti-social behavior, and because of these risks, the parents should not spank their children. Spanking has been recorded since the Ancient Greek times. Spankings were administrated to the adults by pagan priests to increase fertility in women. The Catholics adopted this practice, but instead they used the concept to spank the sins out of women (Lefkowitz 23). The practice began to descend until it was an acceptable punishment for children. Many defenders of spanking believe that they have the right to spank their...

Spanking Children

...Rafia Syed English M-11 October 15, 2014 PARENTS SHOULD NOT USE SPANKING TO DESCIPLINE THEIR CHILD There is a classic story about the mother who believed in spanking as a necessary part of discipline until one day she observed her three- year-old daughter hitting her one-year-old son. When confronted, her daughter said, “I’m just playing mommy.” This mother always spanked her children. Children love to imitate, especially people whom they love and respect. They perceive that it’s okay for them to do so. Parents should not use spanking to discipline their children because spanking does not improve behavior, it may lead to abuse, and it also brings back bad memories. Firstly, parents should not use spanking to discipline their children because it does not improve the behavior of a child. Many a times we have heard parents say, ‘‘the more we spank the more he misbehaves.’’ Spanking makes a child’s behavior worse, not better. The child who feels right acts right. Spanking undermines the principle. A child who is hit feels wrong inside and this shows up in his behavior. The more he misbehaves, the more he gets spanked and the worse he feels. The cycle continues. We want the child to know that he did wrong, and to feel remorse, but to still believe that he is a person who has a value. One of the goals of disciplinary action is to stop the misbehavior immediately, and spanking may do that. But, it is more important to create a conviction within the child that he doesn’t want...

Pros and Cons of Spanking

Only a short 38 years ago in 1974 the United States passed the Child Abuse and Treatment Act prior to this act spanking children was considered a “family matter” and was not something others questioned (CAPTA). A poll of 1,000 readers on parents.com eighty-one percent said they had spanked their child at least once and twenty-two percent do so once a week or more (Moninger). This figure is consistent with the 2007 study that was published in the “Psychology, Public Policy, and Law” Journal which stated that nearly eighty percent of kids are spanked at least once by fifth grade (Moninger). Many people today still believe that it is still family business while others believe spanking is a form of child abuse which is a non-productive way to handle things and scares children for the rest of their lives (Squidoo). Though there are some Pros to spanking, do we know what the long term effects of spanking are on children under the age of 13? Some of the Pros of spanking are that it can be effective on a short term basis by getting the child to change the negative behavior that caused the spanking in the first place (Dr.Phil). When spanking is used in conjunction with more of a humane disciplinary method, such as time outs, it seems to have a greater affect on children from ages two to six (Dr.Phil). Also it seems that parents who use time...

Spanking: Discipline or Abuse?

...John Clay English 101 Mrs. Cannon 25 April 2012 Spanking: Discipline or Abuse? Spanking a child, in contemporary times, is often viewed in a negative light. Many people consider it child abuse and unnecessary. In some situations with some children however, it can be an effective form of discipline. For some problematic children, it may be the only effective option. “The problems some kids who are spanked have in later life might have to do more with their personalities--the behaviors that got them spanked in the first place--than with the punishment (Paul). Parents should be able to discipline their children as they see fit as long as they are not abusing them. Parents are allowed to spank their children in the state of Missouri. Missouri State Law provides the following as to what is abuse: “ (1) "Abuse", any physical injury, sexual abuse, or emotional abuse inflicted on a child other than by accidental means…, except that discipline including spanking, administered in a reasonable manner, shall not be construed to be abuse” (Mo. Gen. Assembly RSMO 210.110). RSMO 160 Section 10, pertaining to corporeal punishment in schools, concurs stating: “Spanking, when administered by certificated personnel … in a reasonable manner..., is not abuse within the meaning of chapter 210” (Mo. Gen. Assembly). These statutes are vague however, in defining how to spank your child in a reasonable manner. In a recent interview, Greene County Prosecutor Dan Patterson shed some light on the matter...

Spanking: Ethical Or Unethical

...Priscilla Alcantar Aug. 12, 2014 Ethical or Unethical Spanking, is it ethical? Some may say spanking is an effective method of discipline. Others consider spanking a form of child abuse. The difference between hitting and spanking forms a thin line for some, for others, there’s a big difference. Hitting is an aggressive behavior intended to inflict harm and pain onto another person. While spanking is a disciplinary action intended to teach or correct one behavior. Spanking is used to teach appropriate behavior but is often interpreted by the child, that to avoid pain and hurt they should not do what is undesired by their parents, at least not in their view. It is a parent’s job to teach their children about rules, morals and values....

Is Spanking a Form of Discipline

... Is Spanking an Acceptable Form of Discipline? You have probably heard the expression, "Spare the rod, and spoil the child." Do you agree with it? Perhaps you were spanked as a kid. Was it appropriate? Some people see spanking as an outdated method of punishment or even child abuse, while others view a slap on a child’s bottom as a parent's right. Where do we draw the line when it comes to disciplining our children? There are many people who believe that spanking your child is not effective and can leave an emotional scar on them. Well, I am one of those people who disagree with spanking your child. I disagree with it because spanking usually stops misbehavior of small children just for the moment, not over the long term. It’s just a temporary fix for behavioral problems. Also, who disagree with me is Murray Straus from “ Discipline and Deviance: a physical punishment of children and violence and other crimes in adulthood”(May 1991). Murray Straus is a social science researcher who finds a relationship between the physical punishment children experience when they are young and the violent acts they themselves commit during their teenage and adult years. On the other hand, child development professionals Lee Stalk, T.Berry Brazelton and Penelope Leach from Taking Sides Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in Childhood and Society, all agree that spanking is not appropriate for children and...

Spanking One's Child

...Chapter Five of the textbook discussed learning and operant conditioning through the use of reinforcements (Licht, 2014). A popular form of punishment around the world is the act of spanking one’s child. Though it has been argued that the method is proven to be effective, some might disagree (Moninger, 2015). Is violence really the solution to everything, even if it is as harmless as a small slap to the buttocks? Suppose a child is misbehaving by hitting another child or sibling. If one chooses to spank them, are they not just demonstrating the fact that, by executing the violent act towards the child, the violent act that the child is being reprimanded from doing is apparently alright for the parent to perform. The kid is basically having...

Spanking Children Research Paper

...One of the biggest debates in child bearing is the choice whether or not to spank your kids. To me spanking is kind of like a right of passage here in the south. It is so widely accepted here because it’s a part of our culture. Our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and so forth were spanked and it seems like something that is passed on from one generation to the next. As defined in Kazdin and Benjet’s article “Spanking Children: Evidence and Issues”, discipline including “hitting children is intertwined with religious beliefs, cultural views, government, law, and soil policy and has enormous implications for mental and physical health throughout the world” (2003). According to “Is it Ever Appropriate to Spank a Child?” over “90 percent of parents in the United States spank their child or...

Cultural backgrounds, disciplinary actions, and long-term effects of spanking on children are pieces of evidence that support the notion that spanking should be a viable option for child rearing. One of the reasons why spanking is an option for child rearing is that cultural backgrounds and environments have a large impact on family dynamics. Summary Of The Case Against Spanking

...In the United States many parents believe that it is ok to spank their children. It’s how the parents were raised, so why wouldn’t it be an issue? Well, research has shown that spanking children is ineffective. The question is, does spanking have long-term effects on children when they are grown? In the article “The case against Spanking,” Brendan J. Smith, a writer for the American Psychology A+ssociation states that the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child said that corporal punishment was “legalized violence against children” and produced a directive to end corporal settings in all areas of a child’s life (par. 4). 192 countries around the world have agreed to support the directive, with the United States and Somalia being...
