I am quite involved in the community and around Marshall County; I am a volunteen at Reynolds Memorial Hospital in several departments, I also volunteer at Reynolds Memorial Hospital’s Safety Town program every summer and I am a peer tutor at Marshall County School’s Special Education Summer School.
I chose to volunteer at Reynolds when I was a freshman at John Marshall. My aunt worked at the hospital and I wanted to experience the medical field for myself. The first program I volunteered for was Safety Town. I have volunteered each summer since, except for one because of a medical issue. From Safety Town, I have learned how to teach a lesson to preschoolers and communication skills. I believe communication skills with people of all ages are …show more content…
I volunteered as a peer tutor in a Multi-category with Autism kindergarten through twelfth grade class room, two days a week for six weeks. I chose this because I knew the teachers in the classroom and I have thought about becoming a special education teacher or working with special needs children in a medical environment. Working with special needs students can be a challenge. Each student had a different ailment and I needed to adjust my communication skills and ways of teaching to their level and their understanding. The students loved to see the “big kids” come in on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I learned so much from working with the students, it is almost indescribable. Volunteering at summer school has been the highlight of my summer for the past three years. It teaches patience, thankfulness and kindness. We take our intelligence for granted. Sometimes it takes working with students who do not have as much as you do, to realize how grateful you should be. The students are so thankful for their life and we should be to.
