Schmitt (Invited Paper) Abstract— This paper reviews the state of the art of optical coherence tomography (OCT), an interferometric imaging technique that provides cross-sectional views of the subsurface microstructure of biological tissue. Following a discussion of the basic theory of OCT, an overview of the issues involved in the design of the main components of OCT systems is presented. The review concludes by introducing new imaging modes being developed to extract additional diagnostic information. Index Terms— Imaging, interferometry, optical coherence tomography, speckle. I. In the early 1980s, multiple studies were conducted to determine the normal values of LA size. Over the past decade, LA size as an imaging biomarker has been consistently shown to be a powerful predictor of outcomes, including major public health problems such as atrial fibrillation, heart failure, stroke, and death. More recently, functional assessment of the LA has been shown to be, at least as, if not more robust, a marker of cardiovascular outcomes. Various anthropometric studies have been conducted in the last decade in order to investigate how different physiological or behavioral human characteristics can be used as identity evidence to prove the individuality of each person. Some of these characteristics are: face, eyes, ears, teeth, fingers, hands, feet, veins, voice, signature, typing style and gait. Since the first biometric security systems appeared in the market, an increasing demand for novel techniques that will cover all different scenarios, has been observed. Every new method appears to outmatch some of its competitors but, at the same time, presents disadvantages compared to others. However, there is still no method that consists a single panacea to all different scenarios and demands for security. This is the reason for which researchers are on a continuous effort for more efficient and generic biometric modalities that can be used in various applications. In this chapter, emerging biometric modalities that appeared in the last years in order to improve the performance of biometric recognition systems, are presented. We conduct an exhaustive survey of image thresholding methods, categorize them, express their formulas under a uniform notation, and finally carry their performance comparison. The thresholding methods are categorized according to the information they are exploiting, such as histogram shape, measurement space clustering, entropy, object attributes, spatial correlation, and local gray-level surface. 40 selected thresholding methods from various categories are compared in the context of nondestructive testing applications as well as for document images. The comparison is based on the combined performance measures.
