Booker T. Washington once said, “Success is not measured by the position one has reached in life, rather than by the obstacles one overcomes while trying to succeed.”

When I first came to The Mount only a short 9 months ago, I wanted to be involved in as many clubs and activities on campus as possible. Running for freshman class president seemed like a good way to put my foot in the door. It was a close race, and unfortunately I lost. Of course back then, I was devastated, but looking back at it now, losing was probably the best thing that could’ve happened to me this year.

(n i c k j o n a s)

I’m not the same girl who stood before you in September giving you a speech as to why I should’ve been freshmen class president. Over the course of this school year, I’ve learned so much about myself. I’ve met so many new and interesting people, peers who have come from all different walks of life. I’ve made new relationships and bonds with people I didn’t have before. I discovered a new strength within myself to push forward, even when times were tough for me this year through school work, stress, and the inevitable drama with friends. Transitioning from high school to college isn’t an easy task for anyone and this past year has been a growing experience for myself and probably every other freshman as well. We all are going into our sophomore year with experience and new discoveries, and I think I’m the right choice to bring us together as a class into the next chapter of our college career.

The most important goal of mine if I become your president is to listen. One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say. I want to listen to what you all want to do, and try my hardest to make it a reality. I want to plan activities for us as a class because over the past year, I’ve seen a decreasing amount of activity in school events from our class. Obviously, there will be some restrictions but as your president I’d want to do things that is in all your best interest. The best way to do this is to make sure all events are well known. I’d want to have class meetings when possible to get feed back on trips and activities we all should do. By doing this, I hope to bring us closer as a class, while having fun in the process.

I honestly wasn’t sure if I was going to join the campaign for President again after my loss earlier this year. I asked myself if it was worth the possible disappointment. But I’m so glad I have. I’ve always believed in hope, and never giving up. I’ve always been told you have to be in it to win it. Who knows if I will win, but either way I’m proud of myself for staying determined and trying my best. I think having that quality is one of the most important qualities a president should have. College is what we make of it, and as your president, I’d promise make it count. So, come in clutch, and vote for the crutch.

Rhetorical Analysis: “the Challenger Address”

...consists of four elements: audience, occasion, speaker and speech, each assessing the quality of speech. In this essay, I will analyze the rhetorical situation of the historical speech “The Challenger Address” delivered by the 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Americans had high expectations of the space programs which intended to provide the United States a great sense of achievement. The significance of the space program lies in essence in which symbolized American glory in science and technology. (Lambright) Therefore, the audience of Reagan’s speech was American public; those who had experienced the tragic national loss of seven American astronauts resulted from the failure of space regime. Evidence of Reagan constantly involving American citizens prevail throughout the speech. He specifically engaged the audience by employing words such as “we,” “us,” “schoolchildren of America,” giving the audience a sense of involvement in the national matter. Reagan also acknowledged pain of the families of the seven astronauts. He showed his understanding of pain of families by saying “we feel the loss, and we are thinking about you so very much,” “your loved ones,” which was an attempt to console them by implicitly suggesting that the families are the primary audience of this speech. Moreover, he created a feeling that he and his wife Nancy are too involved as part of the public. The occasion of speech determines what speaker attempts to address. Audiences expect...

The Importance of Reagan's Rhetoric

...President Reagan’s use of rhetoric in his speeches throughout his political career was essential in establishing a cohesive and successful relationship with the American people. His charismatic nature and unfaltering authenticity in every single speech defined him as a true leader – one who might finally be able to restore faith in the American presidency in a country perpetually traumatized by the Watergate Scandal. Reagan brought indisputable political beliefs established on a solid sense of conservatism as well as a solid moral code built on firm religious values. These two features that Reagan exemplified laid the groundwork for an administration that was characterized by consistent and unyielding principles. The perfect example of this aspect of his administration is prevalent in his rhetoric. His small anecdotes, perfect word choice, and references to past great leaders all underscored his incredible ability to communicate the successes and lessen the defeats that faced his administration. Through his use of consistent and unique rhetoric from his first major speech in 1964 continued to his farewell speech in 1989, Ronald Reagan established motifs of freedom, limited government, moral renewal, and hope for the future that ultimately rescue American pride in the executive branch and in the country as a whole. In Ronald Reagan’s second inaugural address, which spans just over three pages, he used the word freedom 17 times. He took one of the most complex and hard to achieve...

...important political giant who was (along with his Southern Christian Leadership Conference) an instrumental aid to a number of vital incidents that massively helped catalyse the passage of the acts. Incidents such as the Selma march and the subsequent "Bloody Sunday" a well as his role in the Birmingham and Washington marches. His role as a prominent activist and talented orator added to King's importance as it allowed him to proliferate ideas of peaceful protest and civil disobedience to the masses. However, despite King's distribution of ideas to the masses, it is the masses themselves, or rather the local leaders of them, with whom the greatest credit for the passing of these acts must be placed due to the pressure they placed on the presidency to enact legislation. What's more the role of Presidents Johnson and to a lesser extent Kennedy play a highly important role in the passing of the bills. Notwithstanding, King's role as a medium for the precipitation of the important ideals of peaceful protest was undoubtedly an important contributing factor to the passing of the Acts.
