Sports, Media, and the Fans: the Business of Selling Sports

...12/11/13 Sports, Media, and the Fans: The Business of Selling Sports The relationship between sports and the media has evolved drastically thanks in part to the proliferation of electricity and its resulting technology. This relationship has now become the “defining commercial and cultural connection for both industries at the beginning of the 21st century. The media has transformed sports from an amateur pursuit into a hyper-commercialized industry, while sports have delivered massive audiences and advertising revenues to the media.”1 This symbiotic relationship has taken many shapes throughout the years, and each evolution in sports broadcasting has the intent of constructing larger audiences and markets to create higher revenues no matter the medium. In the long run, the only real loser in the sports broadcasting realm is the obsolete medium. As technology has evolved, the way in which sports have been presented has followed suit. “Over the course of the twentieth-century sport was transformed from a typically ad hoc unregulated amateur activity to one driven by professional standards and accountability at all levels.”2 This change came slowly at first, and has advanced rapidly over the past few decades. Now, due in part to advanced broadcasting techniques, watching live events and highlights of the day’s games can be brought to our fingertips with relative ease. Sports Coverage Before the Radio Before the broadcasting of sports on radio and......

Business Report

...IS A BUSINESS REPORT AND HOW DO I WRITE ONE? Business reports can take different forms. Generally, they are concise documents that first inform by summarizing and analyzing key facts and situations and then make recommendations to the person or group asking for the report. One example—four small county hospitals are no longer covering their expenses and are costing taxpayers dearly. Each operates very differently from the others. Some legislators think the least profitable hospitals should be closed while some taxpayers think all four should be consolidated into one regional administrative unit. An independent task force is considering all the feasible alternatives and will make a final recommendation to the county. You have been asked to write a report to this task force. You have an array of data collected from the hospitals as well as information about the communities they serve and available literature on hospital administration to draw from. Before writing this or any report, you must ask yourself two important questions: 1. Who is my audience? (In business, this is likely to be either your supervisors or clients, such as the task force above, 1 who will read your report.) 2. What is my purpose? (This is what your readers need to know to do their job.) If you don’t understand your audience and purpose, you are not likely to create a report that meets the needs of those who will be reading it. AUDIENCE: In the example above, you must write your report as......

...Business Report- Ron’s Pet World Business Report- Ron’s Pet World EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The business of Ron’s Pet World (RPW) started out as a small-boutique store based in Sydney’s west, which has started to slowly develop competitive advantage over its local competitors to reach a stage where they are preparing to purchase the global ‘Pet Barn’ franchise. RPW endeavors to be the global market leader for pet stores by 2020 through the implementation of a series of best practice operation processes regarding inputs, transformation processes and outputs, applicable to every store. Although there is a risk of some of its competitors changing their operation processes in order to reduce the economic viability of RPW, it is critically important that operations processes will be implemented concerning: 1.Global sourcing of materials 2.Customer service 3.The 4Vs (volume, variety, variation in demand and visibility). This is to ensure that customers receive products and services to the upmost of standards. This will ensure that a strong brand name is maintained and developed. At present, prior to its acquisition of ‘Pet Barn’, RPW has several inefficiencies in its operations process that could hinder profit maximisation. This report will provide a series of recommendations to ensure these issues are addressed. 1.1 GLOBAL SOURCING OF MATERIALS: Inputs, defined as the resources that are put into a system to achieve a desired output, are imperative to RPW to create high......
