Using direct observation of cockfighting and its significance within Balinese society, Geertz makes assertions of its symbolic meaning and relation to Balinese culture, concentrating largely on its social implications and masculine symbolism. To the outsider, one may mistakenly see Balinese cockfighting as simply placing a bet on an animal fight like many other sports concerning animal matches, but there is more to the cockfighting tradition than just that. The beginning of gambling can be traced to religious rituals in pre-historic societies. The rituals had a purpose of predicting the future. The procedure of the rituals was simple and consisted of “casting the lots” throwing small objects like pebbles, sticks, nuts, arrows etc. out of the palms of the hands or any container (Hoovers, 2012). The result was checked to see if the number of the objects on the ground was “odd” or “even”. “Even” number meant a positive outcome and “odd” stood for a negative one. With time that process became more complex and also involved interpreting the patterns of the objects lying on the ground. The next step in the evolution of these rituals integrated the sacrifices from the participants to encourage the fate of the Gods to deliver positive signs and help. The sacrifices were normally personal stakes which turned those involved from observers into active players of the process. They gambled their stakes on the outcome that depended on chance only. Eventually the same type of chance-based dealings grew into their every-day life. These models are valuable because they give the reader a viewpoint on where this type of addiction is based from: the television's effects on imagination, the arousal level affected from the effect of television, a manifestation of a dependent or addictive personality, and a pattern of uses associated with the television medium. However, it still remains to be determined whether or not this use of television for effect modulation represents a significant impediment to adaptive functioning for a large amount of people. This research indicates that the television medium can actually relax and distract viewers from negative effects. Thus, this paper attempts to fill this theoretical gap. A literature search of social sciences databases (from 1840 to now) yielded 25 articles with a total sample of 12,848 Chinese community participants and 3397 clinical participants. The major findings were: (1) Social gambling is widespread among Chinese communities as it is a preferred form of entertainment. (2) Prevalence estimates for PG have increased over the years and currently ranged from 2.5% to 4.0%. (3) Chinese problem gamblers consistently have difficulty admitting their issue and seeking professional help for fear of losing respect. (4) Theories, assessments, and interventions developed in the West are currently used to explain and treat PG among the Chinese. There is an urgent need for theory-based interventions specifically tailored for Chinese problem gamblers.
