...of grace; With prudent hand imparts them to the human race. For her a mortal-man will gladly part With all he has; will give his calm repose; For her are born all science and all art, That brows of men with laurel fair enclose. As from the towering mountain's lofty heart The purest current of the streamlet flows, So education without stint or measure gives Security and peace to lands in which she lives. Where Education reigns on lofty seat Youth blossoms forth with vigor and agility; He error subjugates with solid feet, And is exalted by conceptions of nobility. She breaks the neck of vice and its deceit; Black crime turns pale at Her hostility; The barbarous nations She knows how to tame, From savages creates heroic fame. And as the spring doth sustenance bestow On all the plants, on bushes in the mead, Its placid plenty goes to overflow And endlessly with lavish love to feed The banks by which it wanders, gliding slow, Supplying beauteous nature's every need; So he who prudent Education doth procure The towering heights of honor will secure. From out his lips the water, crystal pure, Of perfect virtue shall not cease to go. With careful doctrines of his faith made sure, The powers of evil he will overthrow, Like foaming waves that never long endure, But perish on the shore at every blow; And from his good example other men shall learn Their upward steps toward the heavenly paths to turn. Within the breast of wretched humankind She lights the living flame of goodness bright;...

The Last Spring

...The last spring I remember once I had someone very dear to me, someone that left deep traces in my life, someone that would live in my heart forever, someone that I will never forget. In order to preserve the memory of this angel, a divine human creature, I devote this story to my friend because her innocence and her fragility has been inspiring me for years. I hope that many people will understand the hidden message once they've read the story. It was a wonderful spring dawning. The air was poisoned with nothing else but the strong smell of the spring flowers and the joy of the birds' songs. We were holding our hands and happily as happy can two little girls be, we were bouncing and jumping in the park. Spring could be seen in our eyes, sunshine could be recognized in our smile. It seemed to us like we were flying in the air as two colourful butterflies from a flower to a flower, each of them more and more beautiful, each of them more and more attracting, as if they were the last days of our lives and each of them was more and more challenging. Smiling faces everywhere, people could envy our happy childhood reflected in the deepness of our sight. We were so excited in those spring rainbows above our heads without knowing that this would be our last spring together, remembered afterwards as the coldest one and the darkest one in my life. It's funny how Marta and I met at a beach resort. We could never imagine that we were going to be inseparable friends. Although...

The Nightingale and the Rose

... The Bird as a Sacrificial Hero in Oscar Wilde’s “The Nightingale and the Rose” and “The Happy Prince” BY ASST. INST. Shaima’ Fadhil Hassan UNIVERSITY OF KOYA/ COLLEGE OF LANGUAGES/ DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Heroism and sacrifice are not new concepts; they can be traced back to the early days of human life. These concepts developed throughout history as a result of the development of human thought. In literature, the idea of heroism appears on a large scale. It has been dealt with by different writers in different periods. As far as terminology is concerned, the terms of heroism and sacrifice are interchangeable. The hero must be a sacrificer and the one who sacrifices himself must be a hero, for this reason these two terms (hero and sacrificer) cannot be separated. Thus, both of them go hand in hand in so many works of literature. Heroism and sacrifice are not confined to human beings only. Some writers present their heroes as gods as in mythology, and some of them present animals as in fables. 809 0202 / ‫مجلة ديالى‬ ‫العدد الرابع و االربعون‬ The idea of having an animal as a sacrificial hero is shown in many of Oscar Wilde’s short stories. He developed this theme as a reaction towards his age which lacked, in his view, moral as well as human values. For this reason, he chooses a bird to be his tragic hero. He epitomizes this idea in such short stories like “The Nightingale and the Rose” and “The Happy Prince”. The heroes in these two short stories are birds: a...

The Frog Prince

...princess put on her bonnet and clogs, and went out to take a walk by herself in a wood; and when she came to a cool spring of water with a rose in the middle of it, she sat herself down to rest a while. Now she had a golden ball in her hand, which was her favourite plaything; and she was always tossing it up into the air, and catching it again as it fell.       After a time she threw it up so high that she missed catching it as it fell; and the ball bounded away, and rolled along on the ground, until at last it fell down into the spring. The princess looked into the spring after her ball, but it was very deep, so deep that she could not see the bottom of it. She began to cry, and said, 'Alas! if I could only get my ball again, I would give all my fine clothes and jewels, and everything that I have in the world.'       Whilst she was speaking, a frog put its head out of the water, and said, 'Princess, why do you weep so bitterly?'       'Alas!' said she, 'what can you do for me, you nasty frog? My golden ball has fallen into the spring.'       The frog said, 'I do not want your pearls, and jewels, and fine clothes; but if you will love me, and let me live with you and eat from off your golden plate, and sleep on your bed, I will bring you your ball again.'       'What nonsense,' thought the princess, 'this silly frog is talking! He can never even get out of the spring to visit me, though he may be able to get my ball for me, and therefore I will tell him he shall have what he asks...

The Man Who Loved Flowers

..."The Man who loved Flowers" The title of the text is “The Man who loved flowers”. Reading this title made me at once pay more attention to the flowers that have an symbolic meaning. My interpretation of the symbolic meaning of the flowers’ colours is that they represent the girl in the lane, the young man and the relationship between them. The white rose represent the girl, it stands for innocence and ignorance, just like the girl that hasn’t done anything wrong and is unknowing about the man’s intentions. The yellow rose represents the young man. Yellow colour is often connected with lies and falseness as the man tricks the reader and the girl into believing that he is an ordinary man. The last colour is red, it stands for love and is the colour of blood, and love is what connects Nora and the young man. The young man is well dressed (s. 175 l. 11-12) ”he had that look about him. He was dressed in a light grey shit, the narrow tie pulled down a little”. He has got an ordinary face (s.175 l.13-14) “not an extraordinary face, but on this soft spring evening...” . The people that look at him see him as an symbol of spring and young love. You can see that in the way they describe him when he walks by the old lady at the end of the story. This is also what the reader sees him as until the man steps into the lane. Stephen King makes us believe that this is a love story, all the people the man walks by looks at him and think that he is in love, an example is (175 l. 8-10) “an...

Summary on Nestle

...Company has operated a plant in Michigan, which manage by Brendan O’Rourke. Currently, they are producing Ice Mountain bottled-water. To add to this, Nestle wants to increase the amount of water pump so that they can create a bigger market of bottled-water. However, Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation (MCWC), a Mecosta local resident group, worry that the over pumping groundwater will have an effect towards the environment, and consequently, they wanted to stop the Ice Mountain bottled-water plant. Therefore, the main issues for Nestle can be summarized as listed below: • The Nestle company pumps groundwater, but the ownership of groundwater is controversial. However, there were many arguments regarding Nestle pumping the water from the spring, yet a MCWC’s (Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation) lawyer – Jim Olson agree and explain it under the doctrine of reasonable use which states” the owners of a stream can use its water as long as it’s in connection with their land”. In addition, David K. Ladd argues that the water that was put in the product is no longer water; it is considered a food and is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. • In 2003, Nestle was ordered by Michigan state court judge – Lawrence Root to turn off the pumps due to Michigan climate began to change. In addition, a year after Jennifer M. Granholm (the new governor for Michigan, who stopped the expansion of new bottled-water plants) proposed the Water Legacy Act (to protect all state’s groundwater)...

Dance Critique

...Ballet 2 In the video clip, the ballerina performs a variation as the spring fairy in Cinderella. This is a allegro piece with springy and quick steps. The dancer executes each movement with incredible grace and control. She really captivates her audience and draws them in emotionally. She incorporates ballet incredible technique that is strong but at the same time she makes it look effortless. Her musicality adds to the drama of the piece and shows her true talent. Her port a bras are perfect, the way that they move with each step and add to the complexity of this variation. The port a bras also add to the lines of her body and I like how her hands, in a way, are presenting her feet.. Her legs reach and point while she's in the air in such a graceful way. She also has a great sense of her center, which helps her in her turns and jumps while she moves in a circle. The piece also goes from fast movements to slow and even incorporates isolated movements, which allows time to show cases her talent. She performs one arabesque position into another with out coming off point, then does it again without taking a molecule of sharpness off of her skill level. Overall I think that the ballerina's performance in this piece was incredible. Its inspiring to watch, for someone like me who its trying gain more knowledge and skill in ballet and dance in general. She performs with such ease and grace that really just adds to the beauty of her talent and make it even more awe inspiring...

Springtime Sexism

...Nico deveber Professor Gabrielle Houle DRST 2617 10 October 2014 Springtime by María Irene Fornés is a play that follows the lives of Rainbow and Greta, two lovers living in a small city in 1958. Springtime brings up many issues on love, power, and desperation; especially in regards to poverty and sexism. Through a close reading of the text, it will become clear that this play requires its audience to understand how poverty and sexism intersect in regards to oppression and privilege in society. Poverty is a clear topic in Springtime, it is first presented in the second scene wherein Greta is ill, and Rainbow is forced to steal in order to afford her treatments: “I must do it. You’re ill and we must take care of you.” (83). In this scene Greta begs Rainbow not to do something that could endanger her, and Rainbow insists that she must to be able to afford her treatments. This is the first of many scenes in which the issue of poverty is presented to the audience. In another scene, Greta tries to get Rainbow to throw away the watch she has stolen, and again Rainbow cannot oblige because, “We need the money. For you. To make you well.” (83). Rainbow and Greta are struck with a terrifying reality in which they must choose between Greta’s health, with the cost of sin (and real-world consequences, as displayed through later scenes) and letting Greta fall ill. Rainbow is driven to blackmail and prostitution, taking nude photos with men in desperation to pay for Greta’s treatments. While...

Code of Ethichz

...has been brought to my attention that during the unionized strike one or more employees have sabotaged a machine within the bottling plant. The infraction came from an unknown chemical, which was put into the machine. This has now contaminated 120,000 bottles of our spring water. From what we have found the chemical is very minute and will cause no harm to consumers unless the water is drank in excess. This has caused a huge dilemma for us as a company on the financial end. Recalling 120,000 bottles of natural spring water will be costly as well as desterilizing the machine again. However, we have built our pride and reputation on having pure natural spring water and in my opinion I would say we have to recall the contaminated water no matter how minute the contamination is. If even only one person got sick or suffered a long term illness due to this it could close us down all together. With that being said, I would advise that we get the recall notice out in a rush, and a cleaning crew in to clean that machine and check the others before we resume daily operations of production. I understand this putting us in a financial crunch and may take a while to recover from. The fact is, we sell only pure natural spring water and this is not pure so we cannot sell it or we cannot claim to sell pure water. Not to mention, if there is any risk of someone becoming ill from our negligence, OSHA can fine us much more then we will lose from the recall if not shut our doors completely. I highly...
