Contrasting Growth Experience of China and Sub Saharan Africa

...has become synonymous for industrialisation. Economic growth comes from increasing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), this is done by producing more through the addition of more capital and labour. As you begin to use up the factors of production the law of diminishing returns can hinder growth. Therefore, a vital factor for the development of emerging markets is technology, which should be harnessed to improve means of production and other such things to see a progressive economy. In this sense I will be looking at both China and Sub-Saharan Africa to see how technology or the lack thereof has been utilised and the implications this has had on their economies. There are a number of factors that have contributed to Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries generally not experiencing the rates of growth and development as other emerging market regions, such as China. However, there has been a notable number of changes within these economies that might be cause for some optimism in regards to the business environments. In the 1980s Africa underwent major change and established some pro-market institutions in a majority of the countries (Hoskinsson, et al, 2000) Some scholars have noted a promising rise for...

What Are the Causes of Poverty

...1.0 Introduction 1.1 Definition of poverty CHUPICAL SHOLLAH MANUEL Poverty as a phenomenon is very elusive to define and is rather multidimensional and a contested concept whose definition is influenced by the contexts in which it exists. The concept has both a relative an absolute measure. The dominant Western definition since World War II has defined poverty in monetary terms, using levels of income or consumption to measure poverty (Grusky and Kanbur, 2006: 11) and defining the poor by a headcount of those who fall below a given income/consumption level or ‘poverty line’ (Lipton and Ravallion, 1993: 1 in Handley et al., 2009). Multidimensional definitions acknowledge that poverty is also defined by a sense of helplessness, dependence and lack of opportunities, self-confidence and self-respect on the part of the poor. (Narayan et al., 2000). Sen (1999) defines poverty as lack of freedom while another dimension view it as interlinked forms of deprivation in the economic, human, political, sociocultural and protective spheres (OECD, 2006).This essay discusses the issue of poverty in Africa from colonial period to present day. The paper also analyses the causes of poverty since colonial era, the poverty alleviation strategies adopted to deal with poverty and propose possible solutions for poverty alleviation. A plethora of case studies will be drawn from several countries to substantiate the claims and insights provides in this paper. 2.0 Poverty, colonialism and Colonial...

Pursuing Universal Retirement

...With the continued decline in the number of Americans covered by employer sponsored defined benefit plans, millions of individuals whose employers don’t offer any way for them to save for retirement at work, and Social Security’s continued financial problems1, it is crucial that the Congress develops a common strategy to expand retirement savings in a manner that transcends ideological and partisan differences. In 2006, a bipartisan majority in Congress eliminated barriers to the use of automatic enrollment and similar automatic techniques in retirement savings plans with the result that millions more Americans are both saving and building retirement security. The results have been stunningly good. With automatic features, enrollment in 401(k)type accounts has grown to average over 80 percent of eligible employees. In addition, every major income, age, racial or ethnic, and gender has shown an increase in...

Busi 526a Final Research Paper

...The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) John Doe BUSI 526 October 1, 2011 The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) Introduction The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibits employers with 15 employees or more from discrimination on the basis of disability. The Act applies to all aspects of employment, including applications, hiring, training, discharge and compensation, among others (Dessler 2011). In 2008 the Act was amended creating the ADA Amendments Act of 2008. The amendment clarified the definition of disability and expanded coverage to impairments that limit routine life activities. Significantly, the amendment holds that adaptive aides and conditions that are in remission or are mitigated by medical therapy have no bearing on disability determination (USAB 2011). This paper will explore the origins of the ADA, its history, some of the controversies that surround it, new thinking about organizational theory and future trends. History of the ADA The ADA can be traced to the work of Frank and Lillian Galbreth, pioneers in organizational psychology and ergonomics. During the early 20th century this husband and wife team evaluated motion studies that were first done by Fredrick Taylor (Morgan 1998). The Galbreths went beyond Taylor’s work of simply examining techniques used by high performers and established training methods based on their findings. They used the cutting edge technology of motion pictures to examine how the human...

Declining Sex Ratio in Gujarat : Campaign Against Sex Determination and Sex Pre-Selection.

...[pic] LET THE DAUGHTERS BE BORN, BLOSSOM AND TOUCH THE SKY Declining Sex ratio in Gujarat : Campaign Against Sex Determination and Sex Pre-selection. - Dr. Trupti Shah, "in our society the male child is always a precious child for a mother having three daughters. To her it is of a more value. Because of illiteracy and social customs the status of a mother would change after having a male child." The above mentioned lines are not quoted form the speech of some traditional Kathakar (preacher). These were the wording in a judgement dated 10th July 2001, by the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Ahmedabad in Complaint No. 271/1993. The Consumer Redressal Commission has delivered an order of compensation of Rs. 25,000 for medical negligence in a case that involved sex determination and subsequent abortion of a foetus, which was earlier detected as female foetus but after the abortion it was found out to be a male foetus. In addition, the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission further observes, “The loss of motherhood of only male child can not be compensated by any amount." This attitude of people sitting in judiciary reflect the kind of forces we are fighting in Gujarat. The data from 2001 Census make this point much more clear. Gujarat is among the top four states (including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh) to register the most alarming declines in the number of girls in the 0-6 years category. Gujarat is one of the DEMARU states as termed...

...Typing in Amharic The Amharic keyboard ( ) uses a system where the Amharic sounds are matched to the English letters (a style called “phonetic”). You can think of how a word sounds in Amharic and then type it out with English. Example: typing selam becomes ሰላም Because Amharic has more sounds than English we sometimes have to adjust this rule. For example English does not have ‘ጠ’ and the closest similar letter would be ‘t’. In this case you should type with “capital T”: Example: typing TienaysTlN becomes ጤናይስጥልኝ Notice that we used capital ‘N’ also for ‘ኝ’ and we needed both “ie” together to make the 5th ‘ጠ’ letter ‘ጤ’. When the letter you want to type does not appear when you hit the similar sounding key in English, try using the capital next. If typing the capital does not work, then try hitting the key two times: Example: typing sselam becomes ሠላም Example: typing SSeHey becomes ፀሐይ Next, when you need to type the extra letters of Amharic like ሏ, ሟ, ኴ you can do so by typing an extra vowel after a ‘u’: Example: typing mua becomes ሟ Example: typing guie becomes ጔ Finally, we must introduce a special rule for ' (apostrophe). Some words are spelt with a ሳድስ (6th) letter followed by a vowel, like ርኤ in ገብርኤል. We use the apostrophe here to type “gebr'iel” to make sure we get “ርኤ” instead of ‘ሬ’. Example: typing mel'ak becomes መልአክ Example: typing m'eeraf becomes ምዕራፍ We also use the apostrophe for Ethiopic numbers, so '1 becomes ፩ and so on. If a ' is needed in your document just...

SYNDROM Sjögrenův syndrom je chronickým zánětlivým onemocněním s výrazným postižením exokrinních žláz, zejména slinných a slzných, dále velkých i drobných žlázek trávicího, respiračního, urogenitálního a kožního ústrojí a dalších žláz (Miller, 2011).
