St. Benedict patron saint of students. He was born in the year 480 A.D. in Ignatius. When he was nineteen he decided to live as a hermit in Subiaco with his sister, Scholastica. On there way to Subiaco they stopped in a village were Scholastica met some friends. One of her friends borrowed her a harp and she broke it so she went to Benedict to see if he could fix it. After hours of prayer asking God to help fix the harp God heard him and made a miracle. Soon every one in town heard about it and he became famous but Benedict didn't like all the attention so he continued his journey without Scholastica. When he got to Subiaco a man greeted him he said he was a monk from a near by monastery Benedict told him he was going to be a hermit and the monk said I will bring the food you need to stay alive then Benedict thanked him afterwords he found a cave and lived there praying to God and receiving his meal from his friend the ,monk, but one day the monk died so Benedict had to forge for food. Benedict started preaching to small groups about God. He started to become famous again but he loved preaching about God. Benedict started preaching a lot so he got some men that were willing and they started to build a monastery Soon it became popular and more people wanted to help build the monastery When it was done it became filled with monks and Benedict started preaching to hundreds of people about the holy rule, gospels, and they all would pray together.

Benedict left Subiaco and went to Monte Cassino to build another monastery there. When they were building Monte Cassino a man was building a wall when the devil made it collapse he was crushed and died the monks got Benedict and Benedict spent a lot of time praying for the dead man soon the man awoke from his death Benedict performed another miracle. Benedict was very selfless he cared for everyone a lot and spent time in the day praying for them. He was also very brave for living in a cave and focused on prayer. Benedict was very gallantry for taking the long journey to Subiaco Benedict had a lot of courage for for leaving the comfort of a home and warmth. We should all try to be like saint so you can go to heaven, help out others, and be closer to God. We should act as a saint by praying every day, choose God over friends, and keep the holy day sabbath Benedict died of old age in 547 A.D. His feast day is on March 21st .

...Luis Gonzalez Period 5 9/3/13 U.S HISTORY BIOGRAPHIES BENEDICT ARNOLD Benedict Arnold is the most well-known traitor of the American Revolutionary War. He would have been famous for his successful military actions, if he had not turned spy for the British. Arnold was born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut. In his early years, Benedict joined the army many times, yet always deserted his position. He was apprenticed to a pharmacist and later opened his own store. Arnold became very wealthy and was able to send merchant ships to Canada and the West Indies. When the war broke out between the colonies and England, Arnold, then captain of militia, thought that this was his chance to be famous, distinguished, and respected. After the Battle of Lexington and Concord, Benedict coerced authorities there into appointing him colonel. In exchange he promised to enlist and train men to capture Fort Ticonderoga. When he learned that Ethan Allen already made plans to do the same, Arnold demanded Allen to turn over command to him. Allen forcibly refused, but allowed him to come along. Arnold commanded troops and took the British garrison at St. Johns, Canada a few days following Allen's victory. Arnold and General Richard Montgomery led a failing attack on Quebec in December of 1775. Arnold was badly wounded and Montgomery was killed. After he recovered, he was promoted to brigadier general and for the rest of the year, with a fleet of boats, battled British gunboats on Lake...

Jeane D Arc Thesis

...Catherine d'Arc, and Jacquemin d'Arc. She was raised by her family to be a devout Catholic along with her other siblings. At age twelve, she began experiencing visions of God, angels, and saints speaking and touching her. Many of the Saints she saw include St. Catherine [of Alexandria], St. Margaret [of Antioch], the Archangel Michael. Occasionally she would receive visions from Saint Gabriel, and large groups of angels. Around age 13, her visions and the voices became clearer and more vivid. Joan believed the visions were sent by God. Because of her faith in God, she wanted to listen and follow what they instructed her to do. She said that during her childhood, these visions had merely instructed her to "be good, to go to church regularly"(Joan of Arc Biography. Joan of Arc Biography. Allen Williamson, n.d. Web. 24 Mar. 2015.). Over the next several years, they repeatedly told her to go to the local commander at Vaucouleurs to obtain an escort to take her to the Royal Court. “Around 1428, when she was sixteen years of age, the Saints in her visions began urging her to go to France and drive out the English and Burgundians, explaining that God supported Charles' claim to the throne”(Joan of Arc Biography." Joan of Arc Biography. Allen Williamson, n.d. Web. 24 Mar. 2015). Sometime after these visions occurred, she decided to take a vow of chastity. At the age of sixteen her father arranged a marriage, but she refused and was able to convince the court that she should not have to...

...Pre-Socratic Period Thales of Miletus Background: Thales of Miletus (fl. c. 585 BC) is regarded as the father of philosophy. Thales of Miletus was considered one of the Seven Wise Men of ancient Greece. Thales was the first of the Greek natural philosophers and founder of the Ionian school of ancient Greek thinkers. Works/Writings/Philosophy:  His is said to have measured the Egyptian pyramids and to have calculated the distance from shore of ships at sea using his knowledge of geometry.  He also predicted an eclipse of the sun. In geometry Thales has been credited with the discovery of five theorems like the one that a triangle inscribed in a semicircle has a right angle. He tried to discover the substance from which everything in nature is made off and suggested water.  Thales is important in bridging the worlds of myth and reason. He initiated the revolutionary notion that to understand the world one needed to know its nature and that there was an explanation for all phenomena in natural terms. That was a giant step from the assumptions of the old world that supernatural forces determined almost everything.  While considering the effects of magnetism and static electricity, he concluded that the power to move other things without the mover itself changing was a characteristic of "life", so that a magnet and amber must therefore be alive in some way (in that they have animation or the power to act). If so, he argued, there is no difference between the living and the dead...

...A, THE BRITISH ACADEMY SOMERSET HISTORICAL ESSAYS SOMERSET HISTORICAL ESSAYS By J. Armitage Robinson, D.D, Fellow of the British Academy Dean of Wells 1921 London: Published for the British Academy By Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press Amen Corner, E.C. PRINTED IN ENGLAND AT THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS BY FREDERICK HALI, 76$ J 9 2/ PREFACE The writer of these pages makes no claim to be a historian, but he is concerned with the materials which go to the construction of true history. Occasionally he is led to revise the verdicts of historians on the ground of a renewed investigation of some isolated problem, or in the light of fuller information which has but lately become available. He hopes that he has done this with sufficient modesty. As a rule he has avoided direct controversy and has preferred a positive presentation of the revised position. He is well aware that when offered thus silently the corrections he desires to make are less likely to attract immediate attention than if he directly challenged fallacies which shelter under honoured names. But he writes from mere love of the subjects to which he has been drawn by the circumstances of his position and by local patriotism ; and he has experienced more than once the temporary blindness pro- duced by the dust of conflict. On the other hand he asks for criticism, ...
