Standardized testing has been a well-debated topic in the U.S. for a long time. The debate is whether standardized tests should be restricted or expanded. It is wrong to judge a student based on one end of the year test, when they have so much more to show throughout their school year. It is almost as these standardized tests make teachers teach their students differently by making them teach to what is going to be on the test rather than the normal curriculum. There are many things wrong with standardized testing, including inaccuracy in scoring standardized writing tests (Au & Gourd, 2013). There has also been a resistance and reform movement against standardized testing (Neill, 2016). Standardized testing needs to be restricted through …show more content…
This is not the case however, as according to FairTest, “Students from low-income and minority-group backgrounds, English language learners, and students with disabilities, are more likely to be denied diplomas, retained in grade, placed in a lower track, or unnecessarily put in remedial education programs” (FairTest, 2012, p. 1). This is one of the many reasons why standardized tests need to be restricted. The whole point of going to school is for a student to learn and think about what they want to do in life, as they get older. For students who come from low-income families or students who are minorities to get denied a diploma for doing poor on a standardized test seems unconstitutional. These tests are not just affecting students academically, but it is also affecting students socially, and affecting teachers as well (FairTest, 2012, p. 1). It is weakening “student engagement” and “driving teachers out of the profession” (FairTest, 2012, p. 1). Students themselves have come out to speak about these standardized tests. According to the scholarly journal, High-stakes Standardized Testing and Marginalized youth: An Examination of the Impact on Those Who Fail, written by Laura-Lee Kearns, students demeanor begin to change when they find out they did not do well on the standardized test (Kearns, 2011). One of the student’s who did not pass the standardized test said, “It’s degrading knowing that I didn’t pass” (Kearns, 2011, p. 119).
