Abstract: Eta Ursae Majoris is a main-sequence star that can be found in the constellation Ursa Major. It is the third brightest star in the asterism the Big Dipper and the 35th brightest star in the sky. This star has a surface temperature of approximately 20,000 degrees Kelvin and a mass that is six times that of the Sun’s mass. This star is approximately 100 light years away from Earth.

Introduction
Eta Ursae Majoris is a star found in the constellation Ursa Major. This star has two traditional names: Alkaid and Benetnash. All of the different names for this star have been derived by the Arabic phrase Al Ka'id Banat al Na'ash, which literally means "the Governor of the Daughters of the Bier", or, "The Chief of the Mourners." The mourners in Arabic poetry seem to have been the three stars of the handle of the Big Dipper: Alkaid, Mizar and Alioth. Alkaid is the most eastern star in the Big Dipper; it is the last star of the handle, and is the 35th brightest star in the sky. The constellation Ursa Major is not a commonly known shape in the sky, however it is the asterism known as the Big Dipper. The Big Dipper is composed of seven stars, and as mentioned before Alkaid is one of them. This asterism has a very long history, in many cultures it is seen as a chariot or wagon. These seven stars are not all moving in the same direction, and in time, the Big Dipper will break up. It is only in the past 50,000 years that the “dipper” has actually formed. Alkaid, unlike most of the stars in Ursa Major, does not belong to the Ursa Major Moving Group. It is actually moving in a different direction than the group (Umbra).
Ursa Major
The origin of Ursa Major is uncertain. It is known, however, that the ancient Greeks knew of this constellation. They identified it as two mythological figures. One creature was Callisto, this was a mortal who was turned into a bear after he fell

Intro to Physical Science

...Lab Research Report 1: Procedures in the Physical Sciences Robert Hugee Professor Brian McCann SCI110024VA016-1134-001: Introduction To Physical Science April 25, 2013 One of the underlying challenges in astronomy measurement is the determination of precise distances. Without a knowledge of its distance, the size of an observed object in space would remain nothing more than an angular diameter, and the brightness of a star could not be converted into its true radiated power, or luminosity .astronomy. (2013).  Direct measurement of the wavefunction had also long been deemed impossible because of the key tenet of the uncertainty principle. University of Rochester (2013, March 3). Getting around the uncertainty principle: Physicists make first direct measurements of polarization states of light. ScienceDaily. Large-scale surveying & mapping problems are also key challenges in making direct Measurements in astronomy. Pogge R.(2006) One of the indirect forms that the scientists have used is to resort to GEOMETRY to find the Distance. Parallax is one of the indirect methods where astronomers can measure the position of a nearby star very carefully with respect to more distant stars behind it, then measuring those distances again six months later when the Earth is on the opposite side of its orbit. Allen J.,Boyd P. (1997,April 15) The limitation of parallax is that it just gives distances to stars tp up to a few thousand light Years and beyond those...

Problem of Evil

...The Star: Summary The story opens with the unnamed first-person narrator musing that at one time he had believed that his travels in outer space could not alter his faith in God. The reader learns that he is a Jesuit as well as an astrophysicist. He is aboard a starship returning from a scientific mission three thousand light-years from Earth. Something he learned on this mission, as yet unknown to the rest of the scientists and crew, has caused him to question his faith. He reflects regretfully that the data gathered on the mission will soon make the cause of his own doubt—‘‘this ultimate irony’’—known to everyone. The narrator reflects on the ‘‘private, good-natured, but fundamentally serious war’’ that the largely irreligious crew has waged with him during the long mission. He thinks particularly of the ship’s doctor, Dr. Chandler, who sometimes professes himself willing to believe that ‘‘Something’’ created the infinite vastness of space and everything in it, but cannot accept that a being so powerful could possibly care about ‘‘us and our miserable little world.’’ The narrative goes on to reveal more details about the mission. The ship had been sent to examine the aftermath of a supernova—the explosion of a star, during which it burns with an intensity and a luminosity that may be a billion times that of the Earth’s sun. Following such an explosion, a star becomes a white dwarf, a body of very dense matter. These scientific details are imparted almost incidentally as the...

Physical Science

...LRR#1 Bryan Smith Lab Research Report # 1 Strayer University SCI 110.109GA063-1142-001 Introduction to Physical Science Professor Larry Smith January 27, 2014 The world has always been amazed with astronomy which is the study of earth, planets, space, and the universe as a whole. This is one of the oldest practice since the beginning of time. Many civilizations have studied this for years. This was before anyone came up with the idea to build a ship to visit other planets. People have always been amazed by the unknown, and this is why we still have people going to outer space to discover new things. The use of the research for studying outer space is known as Astronomy. According to the web dictionary Astronomy is the scientific study of the matter in outer space, especially the positions, dimensions, distribution, energy, and evolution of celestial bodies and phenomena (http://www.thefreedictionary.com). Early scientist could not just look up in the sky to measure how far away a star actually is and to see what else is up in space. There is other techniques and equipment is needed. Early scientist use a technique called triangulation. This was done by looking at a star and record its location. Then six months later scientist would look at the star again and measure the distance and record any changes (How are astronomers, 2000). The strength of an earthquake by measure the level of shaking on the...

Replacement of a Star

...Introduction RSH, which stands for Rubin, Stern and Hertz is an investment banking company located in New York City. Peter Thomson, who was their star semiconductor analyst, announced his resignation after getting an offer from one of their competitors. Due to this reason, RSH is faced with a challenge of finding Thompson’s replacement since in the current market situation it is hard to get a star analyst ready to shift companies. Thomson was not only the company’s star semiconductor but also the particular one that it had. The company needed a high attention to the semiconductor manufacturing since his role could not be left unoccupied for long. Stephen, who was the manager of research at the company, formulated a backup plan and convinced Rina Peter’s junior analyst to stay in the business and he promoted her to be a senior provisional analyst (Matthews, 2012). Discourse However, Stephen was still faced with a difficult task to hire a permanent replacement for Peter from outside or to offer Rina a permanent deal. The corporate norm of the company was unusually firm in its research sector. The senior research analysts usually began as a junior analyst and later promoted. Various analysts of the company supported each other, and there was no competition between them. The investigators worked and spent much time exploring on other firms in their zones and came up with contrarian opinions on shares. The company’s culture was among it top competitive benefits since the teamwork...

Hubble Sequence Research Paper

...is nearly a perfect smooth brightness. Unlike other flat galaxies the ellipticals are not as structured and more of look random, with the star usally away from the middle of the galaxy. The second class is lenticular galaxy. This is a type of galaxy which is intermediate with between an spiral and elliptical galaxy in the morphological classification schemes also known as The Hubble Sequence. Lenticular are a disc shape and have used up most or all of their interstellar matter which leaves to have very little onggoing formation in their stars. They can also contain a lot of dust in their their disks because of this they mainly consist of aging stars. Because of their spiral arms they are hard to tell apart from the elliptical when they are inclined face on. Despite morphological differences the lenticualr and elliptical galaxies share common properties like scaling relations and spectral features. Both of these galaxies can be considered early type galaxies which are pssively evolving. well in our local universe as we can tell. Finally the third class which is the spiral galaxy, this is a certain kind of galaxy originally described by Edwin Hubble. A spiral galaxy consists of a flat and rotating disc containing stars, dust and gas. It has a central concentration of stars known as the bulge these are surrounded by a much fainter halo of stars many of thse reside in the globular clusters. These Spiral galaxies are named because of there spiral structures that extend from the middle...

Roaring Dragon Hotel

...Proceedings of the 15th Annual Conference of the Association for Chinese Economics Studies Australia (ACESA) Guanxi Neglect at the Roaring Dragon in South-west China: The demise of an International Management Contract Stephen Grainger1 University of Western Australia ‘guanxi neglect – neglecting opportunities to show respect towards guanxi relationships’ Abstract This paper introduces the concept of guanxi neglect through a case study that describes the takeover of a formerly Chinese managed hotel by a western based, international hotel management company. Specifically, it covers the cultural conflict that occurred for employees trying to adapt from the former Chinese relationship (guanxi) based planned methods of hotel management to that of the more market oriented, management company. Conclusions that are drawn highlight cultural characteristics and issues that companies taking over or approaching joint-ventures with SOEs, are advised to be aware of. In recent years, the hotel business environment in south-west China has undergone significant changes. China’s opening-up has encouraged an outbreak of new hotel construction and property speculation as companies and investors hope to cash in on the domestic and international exposure of the unique region. Prospects for growth in the number of tourists and investors visiting the region in the future were good. 1 Correspondence to: Stephen Grainger The University of Western Australia Perth, W.A., AUSTRALIA Email:...
