Star Wars are one of the most popular and most seen movies in Hollywood therefore: it’s safe to say that anyone would want to feel those sensational emotions of amazement and awe that they get from watching them. Well, that’s exactly how Volkswagen wants people to feel when they buy and drive one of their cars. The Force by Volkswagen is effective in using Pathos, Logos, and Kairos to show the type amazement and awe people could have if you buy their cars. The commercial begins with a small boy dressed as Darth Vader, and he is trying to use the force to move and control objects. As the commercial continues the boy is going throughout the house trying to use the force to no avail. Then his father comes home from work in his Volkswagen, and …show more content…
It appeals to Kairos when the dad comes home and turns the car on when his son is trying to use the force on it. When the father comes home from work the son runs out to the car, completely ignoring his father, and tries using the force to start it. But the car does not start, and just as the son is about to give up his dad starts it from inside the house. The young boy can’t believe what he just saw and is looking around in complete shock. This then shows the appeal to pathos by provoking emotion towards the audience for the young boy, and showing his reaction to the car. Many of the people who saw the Star Wars movies can relate to the young boy because they may have had the exact same reaction when they watched Star Wars for the first time. Volkswagen is trying to show the potential buyer that this will be there reaction if they buy one of their cars, which leads into how it appeals to logos. After seeing the young boy’s reaction anyone would logically want to go and buy one of Volkswagen’s cars because people want to feel amazed. This commercial was very effective in fulfilling its purpose of trying to sell a car to a potential buyer, by using many different ploys to persuade the viewer into wanting to buy a Volkswagen. Failing to elicit a response from a dog, a washing machine, and several lifeless objects, the little Vader sits at the kitchen counter, flustered. As his father pulls into the driveway with a 2012 Volkswagen Passat, little Vader dashes into the driveway while dodging a hug from his father. With all the concentration he can muster, the little Vader directs his arms at the car as he tries to turn it on. Seeing this, the boy’s father starts the car with the touch of a button. Shocked the little Vader staggers back, aghast. Initially, I felt a sense of hilarity while watching this ad. This emotion stuck throughout and does not change even after the ad is over. Most importantly, the use of comedy in this ad resulted in me remembering it, making it an effective advertisement. This Volkswagen Passat commercial uses ethos, pathos, and logos to make it such a successful advertisement. The ad uses these rhetorical strategies with different levels of effectiveness, however. In my opinion, the strongest of the three techniques is the use of pathos. This commercial is a prime example of pathos being utilized to persuade an audience.
