Starbucks is a U.S. based multi-national, which in addition to its flagship Starbucks brand, also has Tazo Tea, Seattle's Best Coffee, Starbucks VIA Ready Brew, and the Versimo System by Starbucks as part of its portfolio.
The flagship, "Starbucks" primarily provides high quality coffee beverages with lesser revenues being generated from its bakery items. The corporation almost exclusively owns all of it U.S. based restaurants instead of expanding through franchising. . As such, nearly all Starbucks restaurants are wholly owned or joint-ventures. A critical part of their expansion strategy is focused on maintaining a high quality product line as well as highly reputable brand name.
Competitive Rivalry: Rivalry among the major players in the coffee beverage industry is high. Starbucks' over 21000 restaurants directly competes with restaurants such as Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds, Tim Hortons and Caribou Coffee. McDonald's has over 35,000 restaurants globally , Dunkin Donut has roughly 11000. Each of these coffee giants are aggressively competing to win consumer business both internationally and abroad. Additionally, there are 1000's of local coffee houses that represent yet another competitive alternative.

The Threat of New Entrants: Because the coffee industry has such a high degree of competitive rivalry, the threat of new entrants is low to medium. Every day there are new small coffee houses being opened. Coffee shops are the fastest growing segment of the restaurant business, growing at 7% annually. These smaller firms are not do not represent a significant aggregate threat to Starbucks because of economies of scale and significant brand penetration. Because the capital requirements are not significant to open a coffee shop, there is the chance that the next Starbuck could emerge.
