My Brother’s Keeper

“Game point Latrell you have won” said James, “yea good game James but it is getting dark lets go home” said I. Walking idly home, James sees something in the alley. “Aye Latrell lets walk the other way home” said James, I am confused on why he said that, I answered “why James I ready to get home and momma is probably waiting on us.” So James and I continue walking and soon we see two figures quickly moving in the dark. As James moves to get me out the way all I hear is about 10 gun shots. After the gun all the gun fires, I seen the two figures take off running in to the abyss like darkness of the alley. Trying to get up and run but could not move. Then I look up and see James hit the ground me just watching feeling a sense of regret also felt two sharp pains in my thigh and arm. Looking down to see what it was, I saw that I was shot twice, but not worrying about myself I crawled to my brother to see if he was alright. As soon as I got to James I was excited to see him still breathing but angered at the thought that he had told me that we should’ve walked the other way home and I didn’t listen. Looking at his wounds I seen that James was shot three times one in the right side of his chest the second one hit his stomach and the last bullet lodged in his shoulder. I speedily pull out my cell phone and call the ambulance. While waiting for an ambulance to come and holding my brother in my arms I begin to think back to the entire thing that earlier this week that would lead to this bullcrap happening. After P.E. Damon aka Big D begins digging in his bag. Then he gets angry and throws it on the ground and says “who went through my bag.” No one answers but soon his friend leaves the locker room and comes back 2 minutes later saying ”no one comes out and says they took whatever is missing from my friends bag we are going to have a serious problem.” I am thinking that it was his friend Thomas or aka Lil T that took whatever was missing from his bag. I don’t know why for some mystical reason they skipped everyone that would possibly steal something for Big D to antagonize my brother James and I. they both walked up to us and said we know you took the bags of weed out of Damon’s bag. I and my brother standing there confused trying to figure out what they were talking about. They said since we were playing games they were going to show us. Then later during the day I knew that an argument between my brother and them was going to break out. Standing in line in the cafeteria all I hear is a loud rectus from people clamoring to see what is going on. I hear the voice of my brother saying “nobody took anything from you, why do I need to steal from you?” Damon said “what is that supposed to mean.” “It means nobody wants to steal from some who steals from other people” angered by my brother response he pushes my brother. When I seen this I hurriedly sneaked the crowd to get by my brother. Looking at my brother’s face is I seen that his emotion was raged after he was pushed down by Big D. so before he could have gotten up, I hit Big D with 3 punches. When Big D turns to me my brother finally to his feet starts punching Big D too. The school cop gets up and slams all of us then takes us all to the office to settle this we the principal. The principal began talking and I knew that he was going to bring me being basketball player holds me too higher standards and I shouldn’t be in mess like this and sent me back to class. But my brother and Damon were sent to iss for the rest of the day and were suspended for 2 days. The shooting of my brother happened the day before he was supposed to come back to school. “Sir, Sir Come On We Need You To Get In The Ambulance” said the man. Waking up out of my deep daze, I felt that I was in that daze for hours waiting on the ambulance. Me and my brother laying on stretchers me lying there thinking about the events leading up to us getting shot and watching my brother lay there knocked out cold. As soon as we got to the hospital they rushed us to the emergency room and called our mother telling her that we had been shot. After a couple days in the hospital I began feeling better and so did James. But we both had to go through weeks of therapy to get over some of the shock from the incident. I got better faster than my brother so when I go to school I already knew what I had to do. When I got in P.E., I walked up to Big D and Thomas and asked where they were the night we were shot they said they were at gym working out, which I knew was a lie. Angered by their response I just walked away and waited till lunch to confront Big D because when he was by Lil T he always tries to show off. So when lunch came around I walked to Big D and asked “that was you and Thomas that shot me and James wasn’t it.” He told me with an excited whisper “you and your bother should have not survived.” With the rush of rage that filled me I grabbed a lunch tray and smacked Big D with it till they stopped me. Was sent to the office almost getting expelled, thanks to the help of coach and my teacher I didn’t. About 1 week after me and Big D’s scuffle in the cafeteria James becomes better and comes to school. The day James comes to school we found out the morning on announcement that Big D was shot 6 times and died from blood lost. After Big D’s death his friend Thomas disappears and was found an hour later in the woods with 2 bullet wounds one in the heart and one in the head. To make amends we went to their funerals and talked to their mothers and prayed for them. Leaving both their funerals, which were held on the same day I really noticed how people realize how much can backfire on a person when they do badly to you.

Morell

..." Abelardo Morell – A Book of Books A visual tribute to the printed word, this ode to books will be irresistible to anyone who treasures the touch of fine paper and the special allure of a clothbound volume. A Book of Books showcases Abelardo Morell's elegant black and-white photographs of unusual books - an impossibly large dictionary, illustrated volumes whose characters appear to leap off the page, and water-damaged books that take on sculptural form. Nicholson Baker has written extensively about books and libraries. His preface is the ideal complement to Morell's photographs in this beautifully produced book lover's book. Bookish quotations from literary sources including Hawthorne, Borges, Cocteau, and others accompany the photographs throughout. Life of Pi

...Acclaim for Yann Martel's Life of Pi "Life of Pi is not just a readable and engaging novel, it's a finely twisted length of yarn— yarn implying a far-fetched story you can't quite swallow whole, but can't dismiss outright. Life of Pi is in this tradition—a story of uncertain veracity, made credible by the art of the yarn-spinner. Like its noteworthy ancestors, among which I take to be Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, the Ancient Mariner, Moby Dick and Pincher Martin, it's a tale of disaster at sea coupled with miraculous survival—a boys' adventure for grownups." —Margaret Atwood, The Sunday Times (London) "A fabulous romp through an imagination by turns ecstatic, cunning, despairing and resilient, this novel is an impressive achievement. . . . Martel displays the clever voice and tremendous storytelling skills of an emerging master." —Publisher's Weekly (starred review) "[Life of Pi] has a buoyant, exotic, insistence reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe's most Gothic fiction. . . . Oddities abound and the storytelling is first-rate. Yann Martel has written a novel full of grisly reality, outlandish plot, inventive setting and thought-provoking questions about the value and purpose of fiction." —The Edmonton journal "Martel's ceaselessly clever writing . . . [and] artful, occasionally hilarious, internal dialogue . . . make a fine argument for the divinity of good art." —The Gazette "Astounding and beautiful. . . . The book is a pleasure not only for the subtleties of its philosophy...

Hia Its Ya Birthdya

...Yann Martel: Life of Pi life of pi A NOVEL author's note This book was born as I was hungry. Let me explain. In the spring of 1996, my second book, a novel, came out in Canada. It didn't fare well. Reviewers were puzzled, or damned it with faint praise. Then readers ignored it. Despite my best efforts at playing the clown or the trapeze artist, the media circus made no difference. The book did not move. Books lined the shelves of bookstores like kids standing in a row to play baseball or soccer, and mine was the gangly, unathletic kid that no one wanted on their team. It vanished quickly and quietly. The fiasco did not affect me too much. I had already moved on to another story, a novel set in Portugal in 1939. Only I was feeling restless. And I had a little money. So I flew to Bombay. This is not so illogical if you realize three things: that a stint in India will beat the restlessness out of any living creature; that a little money can go a long way there; and that a novel set in Portugal in 1939 may have very little to do with Portugal in 1939. I had been to India before, in the north, for five months. On that first trip I had come to the subcontinent completely unprepared. Actually, I had a preparation of one word. When I told a friend who knew the country well of my travel plans, he said casually, "They speak a funny English in India. They like words like bamboozle." I remembered his words as my plane started its descent towards Delhi, so the word bamboozle ...
