During my high school career, I have had the opportunity to participate in numerous community service and leadership activities. I am currently a member of my school’s National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. Through these organization, I have worked in various projects, which include blood drives, fundraisers, and sporting events. Often times, I was required to assist in the organization in some of these events along with other students. The NHS and NTHS have enabled me to give back directly to my community. Along with being a member of my school’s NHS and NTHS chapters, I also perform in various church bands throughout the year. During the Christmas and Easter seasons, I perform for three churches: the Sebewaing

Narrative

...Chapter 1 Introduction Education is “an act of taking someone out of ignorance by means of teaching”, as defined by the World Book Encyclopedia. It is considered as social institution. It includes not only the effects of schooling, but also the more pervasive effects of child rearing practices gained from family training, social exposure and other means of media that a learner experienced and accumulated as part of his maturity. It is one of the purposes of education to prepare the youth for their future places in the society and prepare them to combat the real world. Schooling is only part of education. It is the place where a person gains proper training that his family cannot provide. Thus, in a school setting, education will not be considered a full one if there is no teacher. To teach is to make an assumption about what and how the students learn. Here in the Philippines, teachers are important factor in molding the society because of their tasks in guiding the learners out in the world of ignorance. Being a teacher demands basic competencies necessary in carrying out effectively his noble mission of promoting progressive human development and study social amelioration which involves hardwork, limitless dedication, and all around knowledge and skills. As part of the education curriculum, student teaching is one of the most important elements in the training of prospective teachers. According to Lugos (1985), student teaching is “designed to...

Cheating

...to violate rules dishonestly, or to be sexually unfaithful.11 A cheater (sometimes called acheat) gets something by dishonesty or deception; or by depriving one of his or her rights and usually connotes deliberate perversion of the truth; or by large-scale cheating bymisrepresentation or abuse of confidence.11 Cheating is an act of lying, deception, fraud, trickery, imposture, or imposition. Cheating characteristically is employed to create an unfair advantage, usually in one's own interest, and often at the expense of others. Cheating implies the breaking of rules. Cheating is a primordial economic act: getting more for less, often used when referring to marital infidelity.3 Cheating is when a person misleads, deceives, or acts dishonestly on purpose.17  Cheating fundamentally includes several elements of both lying and stealing, with specific motivations to gain something of value by illegitimate means. That is why lying and stealing are discussed before cheating. Cheating is lying and/or stealing with the intention for acquiring something for more than merely the "pleasure" of fooling or depriving others.  Children Cheating as a concept is not understood by children until around age seven. Preschoolers often change the rules to a game as they play, innocent of the fact that rules must remain consistent to have any meaning. By seven, however, children have gained an understanding of rules, fairness, and honesty, and cheating then becomes intentional.16 As with lying andstealing, cheating is...

...Skipping My Harvard Reunion (A Call to Action) Posted: 05/06/2014 8:51 am EDT Updated: 07/06/2014 5:12 am EDT In a few weeks, the Harvard class of 1989 will be reuniting in Cambridge. There'll be mini-TED talks, a "Taste of New England Dinner," and a chance to sing with the Boston Pops, but I'll be spending the weekend coaching my son's Little League team and hanging out with my family. Reunions seem unnatural to me. I refuse to participate in the charade of pretending to be surprised to see a classmate, and when I'm asked, "What have you been doing?" as one inevitably is, I never know where to draw the line between "stuff" and the full, self-reflective version one might share with a close friend. I think too much detail implies an exaggerated sense of self-worth and is hence a greater faux pas than too little detail, so I've always hewed closer to the "stuff" version, but this runs its own risk of suggesting you don't think the other person is important enough to merit the full telling of your own story. It's a minefield and, in the social media era, one that's entirely avoidable. I've never been unable to locate an old friend or classmate online. It's particularly easy for graduates of Harvard, which maintains a great alumni website--it's where Facebook started, after all. Anyone interested in me can find my professional record on LinkedIn, family photos on Facebook, and many hilarious tweets. If one wanted to have a real conversation--as opposed to an exchange of resumes--my address...

The effective administrator: 1.1 Uses research about best professional practice. Cooperative Learning       "Cooperative learning is the instructional use of small groups so that students         work together to maximize their own and each other's learning." WHAT IS IT? Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement. WHY USE IT? Documented results include improved academic achievement, improved behavior and attendance, increased self-confidence and motivation, and increased liking of school and classmates. Cooperative learning is also relatively easy to implement and is inexpensive. HOW DOES IT WORK? Here are some typical strategies that can be used with any subject, in almost any grade, and without a special curriculum: Group Investigations are structured to emphasize higher-order thinking skills such as analysis and evaluation. Students work to produce a group project, which they may have a hand...

Professional Accounting in the Public Interest

...Chapter Four Professional Accounting in the Public Interest, Post-Enron Purpose of the Chapter When the Enron, Arthur Andersen, and WorldCom debacles triggered the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX), a new era of stakeholder expectations was crystallized for the business world and particularly for the professional accountants that serve in it. The drift away from the professional accountant’s role as a fiduciary to that of a businessperson was called into question and reversed. The principles that the new expectations spawned and renewed resulted in changes in how the professional accountants are to behave, what services are to be offered, and what performance standards are to be met. These standards have been embedded in a new governance structure and in guidance mechanisms, which have domestic and international components. The influence of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) will be as important as that of SOX in the long run. This chapter examines each of these developments and provides insights into important areas of current and future practice. Building upon the understanding of the new stakeholder accountability framework facing clients and employers developed in earlier chapters, this chapter explores public expectations for the role of the professional accountant and the principles that should be observed in discharging that role. This leads to consideration of the implications for services to be...
