Source name: States Prepare Layoffs, Furloughs during Shutdown

HRM topic: External environment wn
Summary: States have furloughed employees as the absence of federal funds is straining already tight state budgets, so more workers will be sent on unpaid leave or even laid off if the shutdown continues. The layoffs have hit civilians at state National Guard bureaus, workplace safety inspectors and state workers who determine eligibility for Social Security disability benefits, among others. At the same time, some states have avoided furloughs by tapping into accumulated federal funds while others are dipping into state coffers.

Why interested:For an international student from China, even a government can still go through shutdown is very shocking. Not only so, while the shutdown has furloughed federal workers, small businesses that work closely with the government are also being forced to let people go. For instance, Chloeta Fire is a firm specializes in battling wildfires, emergency fire response and wildfire preventions and 80% of its business is from government contracts. When the government shut down weeks ago, their contracts with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and some federally funded state contracts were all frozen and they have to lay off some firefighters.

What learned: Wal-Mart, as a company with the Organizational Strategy of Cost, also can offer so much in spite of sexual orientation and earned more praise from gay people. Sexual orientation is a part of diversity in company and the gay people should be protected as a minority. Even though the Supreme Court's June decision overturning part of a federal law that denied federal benefits to legally married same-sex partners has heightened attention on same-sex benefits. The company still have right to offer more on the base of federal law. The other thing I learned is that the HR management may affect not only employees but also some customers. Same-sex customers are not employees of Wal-Mart but this action dose change their altitude of Wal-Mart. However, I am kind of suspicious about the outcome of this movement. According to the report mentioned before, same-sex couples tend to out-earn or outspend opposite sex couples. They may also tend to choose supermarkets with better service instead of a company concentrated more on cost. The prospect of this act may not be so bright.

Jw Marriot Merged with Ko'Olina Resort in Hawaii

...On August 13, 2014 at 9:54 pm, Pacific Business News (PBN) announced the closure of JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa at Ko ʻOlina Resort. Also in this article, the Marriot’s management contract ends on December 31, 2014. There have been speculations that Four Seasons hotel bought the JW Marriot Ihilani Resort, but is not yet confirmed. Because of this proclamation that the JW Marriot Ihilani will be closing, there will be many changes in the organization in all levels of positions. Currently, there are 500 employees that are non-union members that who are affected from this closure. Due to this closure, this will result in employee layoffs, positive or negative employee morale and the struggle of finding new jobs for the employees. The way a company manages this change and assist employees through the transition will make a big impact in the organization as a whole. The change that is happening within Ihilani due to this closure is similar to what other organizations go through as well. Personally, I’ve experienced having to go through the changes in the organization when I used to work for a sushi restaurant called “Sushi Go” as a hostess/waitress. A month before it was announced that the company was closing, there were a lot of changes happening in the organization. There was a rumor among employees that the restaurant was in the verge of closing, but I thought it was a false hoax. However, once we started experiencing major changes, I felt that the rumor was valid. ...

...MANAGEMENT 12E KREITNER & CASSIDY INTERACTIVE ANNOTATIONS Annotation 1a It’s a Small World Question: How does this situation illustrate the pros and cons of economic globalization? Economic globalization provides manufacturers with access to parts from the around the world. With increased specialization comes increased efficiency and lower prices. However, this also leads to a higher level of dependence on a complex supply chain. When Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in April 2010 air traffic across Europe came to a standstill. This brought the supply chain to a halt as parts and supplies transported by plane were left sitting on the runway. The economic impact included costly manufacturing plant shutdowns and sales delays. Annotation 1b Back to the Opening Case Question: What evidence of the managerial functions and skills can you detect in the case? Reference figures 1.3 and 1.4. Of the eight functions of management there is clear evidence of Communicating as employees are invited to provide suggestions and feedback related to the core values. Staffing is also involved as they incorporate their core values into the hiring process, particularly the desire to hire people who are humble. Although less obvious, Leading and Motivating are present as well. Employees involved in defining the company’s core values are quite likely to find their work more satisfying and rewarding. Leadership is evident as there is a clear vision and...
