To achieve Sterling’s objective of increasing revenue and to capitalize on opportunities in foreign markets, particularly the UK, it is critical to develop a strategy on foreign market entry. While I understand management’s concerns regarding focusing on new product innovation and managing a foreign branch, I am confident that these can be addressed and that revenues can increase.
After analyzing various costs, benefits, and firm factors, I recommend that we proceed with a wholly owned subsidiary in the UK, while continuing to research opportunities in other markets (Exhibit 1). A subsidiary would contribute additional profits of over $1.4 million in the first year, while allowing us to maintain our focus on a quality product, customer service and employee satisfaction (Exhibit 2). Additionally, our experience in the US taught us that a lack of involvement in marketing and selling activities could result in lower sales, despite strong market potential. We need to maintain control over techniques used in selling our product to achieve optimal sales results as well as to enforce our strict product specifications. It is also important that we act in a timely fashion, as while the UK is currently the only EEC country where seals are a legal requirement for corporations, it might not be a legal requirement in future. Its currency is also strong at the moment, with £1 = CAN $2.10, an indicator of economic stability and potential growth.
While licensing was also considered an option, there is a legitimate concern based on past behavior that the primary contender, MBF McFarlane, would copy Sterling’s strategies and product. Upon termination of the licensing agreement, they (or another licensee) could become a competitor, as the EEC lacks legal protection against duplicating a product, so long as there are minor alterations to the design. While this may

Ethical Guidelines for Muslims in Business by Dr. Rafik Issa Beekun

...They rented an old one-room schoolhouse from a friend for $150 a year, which gave Roxanne and her children somewhere to live other than a tent, and also became the "corporate headquarters" of the now successful Burt's Bees. Although Roxanne insists that, other than Burt buying a classic motorcycle with his earnings, nothing much has changed at Burt's Bees, the company certainly has a sterling international reputation as an all-natural, sustainable brand. The emollients in natural beeswax, the lack of artificial chemicals, the simple, not-at-all-flashy packaging, the decent prices, all make Burt's Bees a favorite, especially for quality lip balm. The company remains small and "nimble" with a fanatic devotion to environmental causes and "reducing, reusing, and recycling." Over half of the over 150 products available from Burt's Bees are 100% natural, and the company is constantly researching ways to make their remaining products 100% natural as well. All containers, which are made from recyled material, are labeled with a "natural bar" telling the consumer exactly how much of the product is natural. All colors used by the company are from natural plant dyes, with no artificial colors or chemicals. Burt's Bees...

Reducing Blood Glucose of Albino Mice Using Makopa Fruit Extract

...medicine for diabetes. Makopa (Syzygium samarangense) leaves have been found to have antihyperglycemic properties. The researchers thought of another way to produce the same result by using the fruit instead of the leaves. The fruit was put into a food processor, to separate the liquid extract and from the pulp. The retrieved extract was filtered using cheesecloth to remove impurities. The pure extract was put into a vial. The pulp of the fruit was sun dried, powdered using a blender. The resulting powder was combined with the pure extract. The extract from the pulp was the tea that can be orally taken by the mice through regulated feeding. Having produced two products, the researchers were able to come up with a pure makopa extract, and be able to apply current discoveries and studies to produce a medicinal product from makopa. Background of the Study The study was conducted to prevent and cure diabetes through makopa. Also, the study was driven by the medical history of diabetes in the families of two out of three researchers. Because of diabetes’ horrifying effects on human health and it is continuous effect on a larger population, this study aimed to produce a natural cure and prevention for this illness using a native fruit, makopa. Though makopa is found to have antihyperglycemic flavonoids, it has not been applied so this project was the application of the said discovery and it aimed to produce an organic yet, effective medication for diabetes.
