Without it an ecosystem would have a much harder time recovering from disturbances and resisting perturbations. To measure diversity it is as simple as using a formula called the Simpsons Diversity Index. In the lab we surveyed two separate plots to calculate their diversity. In the species diversity lab we started off by taking a field trip from south campus to Wafer Creek Ranch. The purpose of the field trip was to split into two separate groups and measure the diversity on them. The two plots were marked off with biodegradable flagging and everything in the flagging was examined and recorded. To do the second plot we underwent the same instructions as on the first plot, but the plots were three chains apart. The information gathered on the field trip was then plugged into the formula and the diversity of the two plots was calculated. The results are in the following tables. Studies have shown that there is a 45% gap between classes in A* - C GCSE outcomes. It is suggested that the diversity in educational success between different classes are due to inside factors. These are factors within schools and the education system that could cause these differences. One internal factor is labelling. To label someone is to attach a meaning or definition to them, which is done in schools between the different classes – especially by teachers as they usually label working class as negative because of their look, speech code (restricted) and attitude to learning. Becker’s study in 1971 is a prime example of labelling as he studied 60 high school teachers reporting that teachers’ ‘ideal’ pupil most closely fitted the characteristics of the middle class students. In the historical book of Hawaii, Unfamiliar Fishes, author Sarah Vowell goes on a mission to tell the history of Hawaii to a mostly ignorant public, after her fascination with it when visiting on another historical adventure. During her time in Hawaii, Vowell collects information about Hawaii’s rich culture and history, which she then goes on to use in her non-fiction historical piece. Coming from the United States mainland, and being a white female of Christian background, she in some ways sounds a lot like the missionaries she ends up writing about, and can thus bring some question to the whether it is appropriate or not that she tells the history of Hawaii. While Vowell is clearly an outsider, writing about a history that does not exactly line up with hers, she is not in any way engaging in cultural appropriation by writing Unfamiliar Fishes. The history of Hawaii is one that is hardly discussed in American society, and the average American, including myself before my reading, knows very little about Hawaii, besides it being a popular vacation destination.
