Breaching Expiriment

...Breaching Experiment: The Human Response to the Invasion of Personal Space. Most people do not like having their personal space invaded and everyone reacts to this in their own personal matter, depending on that person's preference and the approach of invasion as well. As a usual, we keep distance between other people about arm’s length; we call it personal space. In most cases, this personal space is set for the comfort ability of one another. However, in my experiment, I decided to breach this norm, and took some situations into action. I invaded personal spaces of friend and strangers and observed the reactions of these people. The feedback I received from the invasion of my friend's personal space differed from the response of invading a stranger's. While we were at the café with my best female friend, I stayed very close to her all the time. As we sat down at the table, I sat near her, where was enough space only for one person, instead of sitting on the opposite side. She hadn’t say anything about my invasion, but I noticed that she was wandering if something wrong with me. Though, when I intruded stranger’s personal space, their reaction toward it was different. While I was in subway, I spotted a man who was sitting on the empty bench and reading a newspaper. When I sat down right beside him, as close as I could, the man stopped reading and looked at me, as if he was expecting me to say something, but I just smiled to him. The man ease up a little and continued his...

Poetry Analysis

...Jack Saindon English 201-046 Essay #2: Poetry Analysis In Robert Hayden’s “Those Winter Sundays” (154), he talks about his father whom he never appreciated as a child, but looks back now to understand the depth of his love. The story entails the author speaking of his past as a child, where his father would light all the fires in the house, early in the morning after a tough work week. He says, “then with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather” (154). This went unappreciated by anyone in the family, including the author; “No one ever thanked him” (154). Once the rooms were warm, his father would call him, only for the author to return not the thanks he properly deserved. In his poem, Hayden uses contrast to illustrate the relationship between him and his father. The temperature of the house and outside, symbolize their relationship. His father goes out in the “blueback cold” to make the house warmer, to make “banked fires blaze” so that his child can wake up in a nice warm temperature. He says, “I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking”(154). Despite his effort, the author treats his father with just as much coldness as the climate they live in, even at the sight of his shoes cleaned. Hayden writes, “Speaking indifferently to him, who had driven out the cold and polished my good shoes as well.” (154). His father created literal warmth for him, but he did not warm up his father’s heart emotionally in return with love. In the last two lines...

Row Poem Annotated

...“Row” Analysis Essay The poem presents the experience of quarreling through the use of imagery, with giving personification to a noun to help the reader understand the feelings of a row. ‘the room swayed and sank down on its knees’, this shows the feelings that are occurring within the room itself, not the actual room. The use of the personification creates the idea of how the air or atmosphere in the room is, the air ‘swayed’ as being unstable, changing, attempting to stay normal but fighting to be upright. The ‘sank down on its knees’ (when one is weak, has given up or is in defeat) shows the part of giving up, but did not sink all the way down, this could present that the feelings are still trying to fight back without giving up completely....

Is Law Enforcement Racist?

...Steven Rousse English Composition Professor David Mook September 15, 2014 Is Law Enforcement Racist? Racism, stereotypes, racial profiling, discrimination, no matter what you call it it’s all the same thing, and it has been around for years. Lately racial discrimination has been greatly decreased, yet not completely eradicated. One would think that the last place there wouldn’t be a single shred of any discrimination in law enforcement, however, there is and the fact that there is racial discrimination makes for some very controversial cases; such as the case of the shooting of Michael Brown, the brutal beating of Rodney King, and the wrongful beating of Abner Louima. All of these incidents happened because of an unfair percentage that police are to show more brutality to a minority group than to whites and there are plenty of facts that support this such as the amount of white officers over colored ones, and the biases and stereotypes that are to blame for “racism” in law enforcement. The case of Michael Brown in Fergusson, Missouri a predominantly black society, with a predominantly white police force, there are multiple stories that both tell stories of what people saw. One account states that the teenager Michael Brown had his hands in the air and was surrendering whilst unarmed; the officer opened fire and killed him. However, what the authorities say is the exact opposite in which Michael Brown actually attempted to attack the officer in his car and tried to...

How Much Did Castles Change in the Middle Ages and Why

...Introduction Castles first came to England in 1066 when William, Duke of Normandy, won the battle of Hastings. The Normans needed castles because they had taken control of England by force and were hated by many English people. The Normans had to protect themselves from English rebellions and they needed to keep power over and show strength to the English people. William made sure that castles were built all over England in major towns. The first castles were built very quickly and were very simple, but during the reign of William and throughout the rest of the Middle Ages (1066-1500) the design of castles changed. In this essay I will talk about how much castles changed during the Middle Ages and the reasons for this. Motte & Bailey Castles (1066 – 1078) The first castles to be built in England by the Normans were called Motte & Bailey castles. They had: • The Keep – a wooden tower used when under attack and for soldiers to keep lookout. • A Motte - a large mound of earth that the Keep was built on. • A Bailey – a large yard that sat next to the Motte, attached to the Motte by a wooden bridge. • A Palisade – a wooden fence all around the Bailey with a ditch around the outside. • Wooden gateway - the entrance to the castle with a wooden bridge over the ditch. Norman soldiers lived in wooden buildings in the Bailey. Motte & Bailey castles were made of earth and wood, which was easy to find, and they could be built really quickly, in 7-21 days. The height...

Narcissus Essay Outline

...of Narcissus: Essay Outline 1. Introduction Thesis: In his painting, the Metamorphosis of Narcissus, artist Salvador Dali uses metaphor, juxtaposition, and symbolism to reveal the reason behind, contrast between, and implements of Narcissus’s transformation from life to death. 2. Body Paragraph #1 Metaphor a. Example: The group of dancing women embodies the idea of contentment. Significance: Despite the fact that the women are most likely the rejected lovers of Narcissus, they are dancing with joy because they have each other. The loss of Narcissus’s beauty has little effect on their overall happiness, since companionship is more valuable than beauty. b. Example: Narcissus’s loneliness is comparable to the remaining chess piece. Significance: Narcissus’s divine, greatly sought after beauty, ironically, has made him dissatisfied with life. As a result of his self-love and selective attitude towards possible suitors, he has ostracized himself from all others, which causes him extreme emotional pain. c. Example: The hidden statue is a metaphor to Narcissus’s inevitable fate. Significance: Just as the statue is difficult to see behind the mountain tops, Narcissus is unable to see his destiny, which is to die. Although it is difficult to detect, the constant presence of his pre-determined future is undeniable. 3. Body Paragraph #2 Juxtaposition d. Example: The figure of the living man contrasts sharply with the stone hand. Significance:...
