Storage Technologies

...Storage Technologies Nearly every facet of computer technology, like processor speed, memory capacity and I/O capabilities has seen dramatic improvements since its inception. The one technology that has lagged behind is storage. Although data storage has seen considerable improvements from its infancy in 1956, it has not seen major disruptive changes; though, according to the CEO of Pure Storage, Scott Dietzen, in this next decade it’s going to be storage’s turn to face disruptive change (Korbin, 2011). This means that as this decade takes its course, we’ll see major changes in the way we store our data. Pure Storage, a company focused on data storage, has proposed one solution to our need to effectively and efficiently store large amounts of data. We all have heard of flash memory—non-volatile computer storage that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed—and we also know that flash memory is quite expensive compared to traditional storage technologies. The benefit of adopting flash memory for storing data has been unrealized by enterprises, primarily due to the high cost of implementing such infrastructure. Nevertheless, for enterprises undertaking the transition to a virtualized environment, flash memory can be an alluring proposition. Faster, smaller and more efficient than traditional disk technologies, flash makes a convincing case (Korbin, 2011). Scott Dietzens’ Pure Storage company boasts a solution that delivers enterprise-caliber storage at a price point geared...

Data Storage Technology

...Chapter 5 states everything we need to know about the importance of data storage technology. A typical computer system has multiple storage devices filling a variety of needs. Primary storage devices support immediate execution of programs, and secondary storage devices provide long-term storage of programs and data. The characteristics of speed, volatility, access method, portability, cost, and capacity vary between storage devices, forming a memory-storage hierarchy. Primary storage tends to be at the top of the hierarchy, with faster access speeds and higher costs per bit of storage, and secondary storage tends to be in the lower portion of the hierarchy, with slower access speeds and lower costs. Modern computers use memory implemented with semiconductors. Basic types of memory built from semiconductor microchips include random access memory (RAM) and nonvolatile memory (NVM). The primary RAM types are static and dynamic. Static RAM (SRAM) is implemented entirely with transistors; dynamic RAM (DRAM) is implemented with transistors and capacitors. SRAM s more complex circuitry is more expensive but provides faster access times. Neither type of RAM can match current microprocessor clock rates. NVM is usually relegated to specialized roles and secondary storage because of its slower write speeds and limited number of rewrites. Optical discs store data bits as variations in light reflection. An optical disc drive reads data bits by shining a laser beam onto a small disc location...

...the target i.e. server side data storage center. In this case of Deduplication the client is not modified and is totally not knowing or aware of any Deduplication mechanism happening at the target side. Target-based Deduplication accomplished by the backup servers and hardware appliances at target which having ability to perform and handle those Deduplication activities. That means there is no overhead on the client or server being backed up. Thus the result of this kind of technology i.e. target based Deduplication drastically raise the storage utilization, but at the same time it fails to meet bandwidth saving perspectives. 3.2.2. Source based de-duplication In this scenario Deduplication performed on client side i.e. before it transmitted By processing the data before transmitting we can reduce the transmitted amount of data and therefore it reduces the network bandwidth and this less bandwidth is required for the backup software. Deduplication on source side uses the engine at client side which checks for the duplication against the Deduplication index which is located on the backup server. This is done with the help of the backup agent who is aware of the Deduplication which is located at the client side and who is responsible for backs up only unique data or blocks. And those unique blocks of data will be transmitted to the disk. The result of this kind of technology i.e. source based Deduplication improves bandwidth as well as the storage utilization. ...

Storing Up Treasures

...where thieves break in and steal.” – Matthew 6:19 Actually, most people do store up their treasures on Earth, so much so in fact, that quite a few people are filling up their own treasure chests by renting out storage space. Self-Storage is an industry in which storage space is rented out to tenants, usually on a monthly basis. The storage space is usually in the form of a room, container or locker. Access to the space is usually secured by the tenant’s own lock and key. Clients include individuals, who usually store household goods, as well as businesses, which use the facilities for storing inventory or archives. As of 2009, there was approximately 2.3 billion square feet of rentable storage space in the US. The first modern self-storage facilities appeared in the US in the 1960s. The self-storage business was meant to provide individuals with space to deal with “life events”: moving, marriage, divorce etc. American workers have always been quite mobile, and the end of the 20th century, with its increasing divorce rates, and rush of transitions to 2nd or 3rd homes, saw a significant increase in the number of life events. However, by the end of the 1990s, demand was growing at a faster rate than explained by these factors. From 2000 to 2005, the number of self-storage facilities almost doubled, with 3000 new facilities built each year. Since the 1990s, demand was increasingly driven by the accumulation of goods, fuelled in part by increasing real disposable income. Individuals...

Does Schema Theory Effect Memory Encoding?

...CLA IA HL Psychology Does Schema Theory effect memory encoding? Introduction: Memory can be defined as the process of reproducing and recalling information from something that has been learned before. (W. Matlin) There are two main types of memory storages, short term storage and long term memory storage. Short term memory is usually described as the recollection of information that happened recently, while long term memory is something that can retain and stay in your brain for long periods of times. (Zimmermann, 2014) Schemas are mental saving devices, they are plans for action and frameworks for thinking. Schemas originally are used and serve as a window through which we perceive the way the world is. They are hierarchies of knowledge and provide us with all sort of different information. They allow us to navigate ourselves in a complex world through this pre-existing rules and guides for action and thought. (Bryan). A study conducted by (Bartlett, 1932) “War of the Ghosts” was aimed to investigate the effects of schemas on human memory. In the method the participants were asked to read a story about an American tale where people were hunting seals in Canoes. The participants’ memory was tested and investigated by repeated reproduction and serial reproduction. In serial reproduction, the first participant would read the original story and then rewrite what they remember about it. The first participant’s reproduction would then be read by the second participant...

Storing and Issuance

...Storing and Issuance At East Avenue Medical Center storing and issuance is done to make sure that the First-In First-Out policy has been followed in order to retain the quality and quantity of the food items and it has a standard operating procedure. The objectives of the standard operating procedure are to make sure that proper storage and issuance of food items are done to avoid losses and shortage. The following diagram shows the flow of storing and issuance at EAMC: The first step, storing and issuing of supplies where the storekeeper and MMS staff store should store all items properly. If items are perishable, store food items at the freezer/refrigerator and it non-perishable, store items in a dry storage room. To avoid losses or pilferages, all storage areas must be locked. Second step, record all supplies. The storekeeper should record all food items using the stock card for the control of supplies. The third step is issuance of supplies. The dietary supplies may be issued from NDS storeroom and MMS storeroom. The food to be issued is based on the menu of the day. The storekeeper shall issue food items upon presentation of properly signed RIS. RIS must contain the amount and list of all items needed and must have the signature of the requesting Admin ND. The storekeeper should prepare daily food consumption report and must do a month end inventory and then submit it to the ND who does the preparation of monthly report. Last step is monitoring. This is where all...

Managing Technology

...Technology, Information Technology included, have changed our lives in so many ways. It changed how we recorded our thoughts into written words, how we communicate with one another, how we shop, bank, how we keep our memories, most aspect of our lives. It significantly changed the manufacture industry and touched almost every single industry. The first computer was invented in 1939 by Hewlett-Packard in a garage in Palo Alto, California. It was mostly used in military/government and universities/science lab. It took 40+ years for the first personal computer to be created by IBM (1981). The first personal computer (PC) ran on a 4.77 Mhz Intel 8088 microprocessor [1]. After that computer world has advanced leap and bound, hardware as well as software. Some of the laptops today run on a 4.0 Ghz (almost 1000 times more powerful). According to US census, in 2012, 80% of all house hold had a computer at home in the US [2]. Technology changed the way we recorded our written words. For hundreds (if not thousands) of years, we used pen and pencil to write on paper. We later used type writer to type on paper, then type into computer. Now, with the help of some software, we don’t even have to type. We can “speak” or “talk” for computer (or other devices like smart phone, tablet, etc) to “type” for us. Thanks to technology, we now have “text-to-speech”, “talk-to-type”, and “talk-to-text”. As technology changes, businesses had to change to survive the IT impact...

Regina most likely fits into segment 3 as value for the computer is quite high and she disagrees highly with q1, she also would search for the best price when looking to buy as she is younger and does not necessarily have the disposable income to upgrade. The advantage to doing both the qualitative and quantitative data is they both may show different types of customers you may not have originally thought of. Qualitative data really shows you who a person is and what they do however quantitative data substantiates the qualitative or turns it on its head because it is what the consumer perceives. Technology and Communication

...Abstract: Impact of technology is both positive and negative. Logically thinking, technology has since been better in the communication process and done negligible harm. Development of technology has considerably improved our lifestyle. It has made its impact felt on each and every aspect of life, including communication technology. Invention of Alexander Graham Bell in 1875, the first inventor that impacted communication in humans to a massive extent. Impact of technolgy on the communication process, also comes as a mixed baggage. Daily routine of a person, the day begins with a “good morning” text and ends in a “good night” text. All done on a mobile application for smartphones. On the same application social networking sites are a world themselves, a Virtual World, to make the process quick and easy there are modes, like online chats, emails, teleconferencing, video conferencing, networking sites, etc. The greatest need for all human needs is, the need for communication. It is a daily use for us as humans to survive in this life. There is no way we can not go without communicating. In my eyes; “it is another way of sending messages”. In recent years, technology of communication has rapidly developed since the century of when, “pigoens delivered notes”, “horses sent mail deliveries to others”, a lot of things. It became advancement in telecommunications. It became a big impact to society to our generations and...
