Dennis Oppenheim, Terrestrial Studio at Storm King Art Center (May 14 – November 13, 2016) is a giddy jaunt through pristine outdoor sculpture in its natural habitat. Featuring newly realized works such as “Entrance to a Garden” and “Dead Furrow”, this exhibition breathes new life into the meaning of a living legacy and subsequently into the 500 acre grounds of storm king itself.
Oppenheim, (1938-2011) coming out of the conceptual movement, first became known for his land art pieces in the mid 1960’s. In the 1970s he used film and video in relation to performance works and through the 80’s and beyond he created with primarily industrial materials for the “transformation of everyday objects in art”. Oppenheim’s broad brushstroke of a career …show more content…
They stand larger than life but seem to dance eternal as each form, hinged into three sections with arms pivoting outward, twists and ungulates in stillness. Each piece has been inserted with small windows, doors and various architectural elements that make every form unique. They have a quiet dignity and party clown like whimsy that can only express playful humor.
Nearby, Alternative Landscape Components: Red Rocks, Straight Trees, Small Bushes, 2006 rests amidst a glen along the path. It is alien in the landscape, out of place and garish. Simplified faux trees and bushes are constructed out of steel and PVC. Formerly a practitioner of land art, here Oppenheim creates its polar opposite, wanting the work to be from an “alternative world”. Still in the seeming plasticity, the translucent rocks glow within the sunlight and the steel drum trees reach for the glorious summer sky. It is the electric landscape of the creative …show more content…
It takes the form of a giant suit jacket in perforated stainless steel with a dress collar and tie. An archway in the center of the form leads to a white gravel garden surrounded by a hedge of small trees. The garden is small and somewhat comical surrounded by miniature trees in a larger natural setting. It feels formal but still carries fantastical storybook glory. The small interior garden situated behind the suit jacket gate is shaped like a T and mimics the shadow of a human torso wearing a dress shirt with outstretched arms. The piece represents a fusion of art, architecture and fashion and although Oppenheim designed the shirt shaped garden in early proposals, it has never before been installed with its full shadow configuration until now.
You can feel Oppenheim’s presence all throughout Storm King and you can even hear his footsteps welcoming you and leading you inside as you enter the visitors’ center and galleries in A Sound Enclosed Land Area, 1969. In this work Oppenheim followed a map and recorded his footsteps while walking in Milan. The piece subverts the idea that art is a concrete object. It is haunting and beautiful, and in its own small way serves to bring even more presence of the artist to the exhibition both in spirit and to honor the breadth of this depth

Great Speeches

...Whether like it or not, some aspects of our lives are influenced by decisions made by anyone but us. Politics and political movements containing discourses could be listed under this category of decisions. It`s been a long while since public speakers are concerned with various dimensions of speech such as sounds, gestures, syntax, rhetoric, meanings, speech acts, moves, strategies and turns. In this paper our main focus is on the rhetoric of a speech. As we know where rhetoric is concerned we should inevitably deal with literature. In other words rhetoric is like a joint which connect literature with politics and establish a method of analyzing political speeches called polio-linguistic approach. Thus we can consider political discourses as pieces of literature. Literary techniques especially rhetorical devices serve as one of the most distinctive features of the greatest and most influential speeches of all time. There is no shortage of rhetorical devices used in these speeches, but we can prioritize them by count of repetitions in political discourses. In this study first I have represented the necessity of using these types of persuasive skills in political discourses, the methods within which politicians take advantages of these skills and the different sides of a successful speech. Then after a glance through different rhetorical devices, excerpts from four of the greatest speeches in history are provided with the rhetorical devices indicated in them. Finally a quite...

Theater

...PHILIPPINE THEATER Theater in the Philippines is as varied as the cultural traditions and the historical influences that shaped it through the centuries. The dramatic forms that flourished and continue to flourish among the different peoples of the archipelago include: the indigenous theater, mainly Malay in character, which is seen in rituals, mimetic dances, and mimetic customs; the plays with Spanish influence, among which are the komedya, the sinakulo, the playlets, the sarswela, and the drama; and the theater with Anglo-American influence, which encompasses bodabil and the plays in English, and the modern or original plays by Fihpinos, which employ representational and presentational styles drawn from contemporary modern theater, or revitalize traditional forms from within or outside the country. The Indigenous Theater The rituals, dances, and customs which are still performed with urgency and vitality by the different cultural communities that comprise about five percent of the country’s population are held or performed, together or separately, on the occasions of a person’s birth, baptism, circumcision, initial menstruation, courtship, wedding, sickness, and death; or for the celebration of tribal activities, like hunting, fishing, rice planting and harvesting, and going to war. In most rituals, a native priest/priestess, variously called mandadawak, catalonan, bayok, or babalyan, goes into a trance as the spirit he/she is calling upon possesses him/her. While entranced...

For me music and photography are similar art forms. I collect experiences, stir them in myself and express it in my own language. Just like my photography, music is my language.” Ty Bello Today people live in a visually intensive society and a world of spectacular and exciting images. They are bombarded with an orderly and continuously stream of visual stimulation from all manner of media every day. They see mediated images more often than they read words. Images sell everything. This paper offers an analytical framework for understanding how still photography is Literature in the 21st Century, using TY Bello’s still pictures. End of World

...2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End? 12.22.11 Scenes from the motion picture "2012." Courtesy Columbia Pictures. Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice. Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we're frequently asked regarding 2012. Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012. Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012. Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012? A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter...
