The result of this review indicates that using a story map strategy, as a method to enhance the reading comprehension for students with learning disabilities, is one of the effective approaches used to improve the reading comprehension. Participants involved in these studies from different grade level exhibited a significant improvement in their reading comprehension. The researchers measured their participants’ abilities before starting the intervention, which is teaching them how to use a story map strategy. After using the story map strategy, participants showed improvement in their scores through reading comprehension tests. All participants presented increase from the baseline to the intervention (Taylor, Alber, & Walker 2002; Boulineau, Fore, Burke, & Burke 2004; Onachukwu, Boon, Fore, & Bender 2007; Stagliano & Boon 2009; Wade, Boon, & Spencer 2010; Narkon and Wells 2013).
There are limitations in this review considering findings. First, some studies used a few participants that made some studies results limited and difficult to generalize to others participants (Boulineau, Fore, Burke, & Burke 2004). Second, …show more content…
Moreover there are many aspects that might concern the researcher while conducting the study such as number of participants, parents’ consent, and the school cooperation. Fourth, General and special education teachers need to involve in workshops and conferences to train them on how to use the story map strategy. Teachers in both general and special education need to attend workshops to improve their strategies of teaching reading for students with learning disabilities. These workshops have to be provided by experts in the area of reading comprehension. Teachers can also attend summer internship if they did not have time to do it during year
