Dedication
To my family
You have been my source of inspiration and hard work. You sacrificed everything that you had for the sake of my education. From you, I have learnt that: ‘it is only through a disciplined mind that success can only be achieved’. I will always love and cherish you.
And, to the late Mr Paul Malaba
(Former Chairman of the Insurance and Actuarial Science Department at NUST)
You have gone too soon dear Sir, but your immense contributions to the academic fraternity will forever be cherished. You were an inspiration and a father-figure to all of us. The Q.A.B courses at NUST will never be the same without you.

Acknowledgements
First and foremost, I would like to give honor, praise and glory to the almighty lord for his unending mercy, protection and unconditional love: “I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart; and I will glorify thy name for evermore” (Psalms 86:12, King James Version).
I would also like to thank my parents, Mr. and Mrs. Madamombe, for their parental advice, financial support, guidance and endless love. Dear father and mother: ‘you are my fountain of everlasting inspiration. Many parents have done so well to raise their children in the best possible way, but - you surpass them all. Thank you for giving me the key of life called education. I shall unlock the value of life and derive the meaning of success with this key.’
A special acknowledgement goes to my project supervisor, Mr. A. Nyanhete, for his guidance, patience, relentless support,...

Economic Statistics

...Introduction The current state of the world economy is quite uncertain. Economic statistics that governments and other financial institutions use to project the economy imply that the world economy is shrinking. Since 2008, the state of the American economy has not been attractive. For instance, the United States economy has not registered any significant growth for the last three years. The 2011 second quarter results indicated that gross domestic product improved by 1%. At the same time, there was slight increase in business fixed investment sector. This was mainly attributed to good performance in software and equipment. In general, the economy seems to be headed for recovery (United Nations, 2010). There were increased product and services exports as well as over growth in consumer spending. Overall federal government spending increased. This was as a result of increased government spending in military. The issue of oil and turmoil in oil producing countries especially in North Africa has contributed negatively to the economy. High energy costs mean that most sections of the economy will experience high production costs. Final products will be more costly to the consumer and thus leading to reduced consumer spending. A broader look at the state of the economy reveals that the economy is headed for a recovery. Most core sections of the economy have begun to register growth meaning that soon the economy will bounce back (United Nations, 2010). Macroeconomic......

Executive Summary Toyota Motor Corporation is leading the way to future mobility through innovation, productivity, quality and efficiency. Toyota uses a self-developed strategy known as the Toyota Production System (TPS) to guide business process improvements. This strategy applies principles of “just-in-time” production, also called “lean”, to align supply closely with consumer demand while avoiding surplus inventory. The report defines eight TPS terms, i.e. jidoka, just-intime, hoshin, heijunka, muda, kaizen, standardized work, and pokayoke; and gives examples of how terms are applied in other industries. TPS has been utilized by a variety of industries all over the world, though many organizations tailor system components to their needs rather than embracing TPS as a total management system. The advantages of TPS are......

Women

...12:06 Page 1 WOMEN, GENDER AND WORK People are not defined solely by their work, nor is it possible to ignore the effects of factors outside the workplace on a person's status at work. To seek equality at work without seeking equality in the larger society – and at home – is illusory. Thus an examination of the issues surrounding women, gender and work must be holistic. That means considering the role of productive work in life as a whole and the distribution of unpaid work as well as the myriad questions relating to employment. This important anthology brings together the thinking of leading philosophers, economists and lawyers on this complex subject. Selected recent articles from the multidisciplinary International Labour Review are assembled for the first time to illuminate questions such as how we should define equality, what equal opportunity means and what statistics tell us about differences between men and women at work, how the family confronts globalization and what is the role of law in achieving equality. There is an examination of policy – to deal with sexual harassment and wage inequality, for example, as well as part-time work, the glass ceiling, social security, and much more. A major reference on the best of current research and analysis on gender roles and work. Martha Fetherolf Loutfi has been Editor-in-Chief of the International Labour Review, a Senior Economist for the Brandt Commission and in the ILO’s Employment and......
