Developing a native XML database introduces many challenges, some of which we consider here. The first major problem is that XML data is ordered, whereas relational databases operate on set-based data. We examine the ordering problem in great detail in this thesis, and show that while it imposes an unavoidable performance penalty on the database, this penalty can be reduced to an acceptable level in practice. We do this by making use of type information, which is often present in XML data, and by improving existing results in the literature.
