Course Overview
This course is about the creation and maintenance of long term value for the organization. It is concerned with both the determination of the strategic direction of the firm and the management of the strategic process. The course builds on prior studies of functional areas while recognizing that most real business problems are inherently multi-functional in nature. Thus, this course employs an explicitly integrative approach in which we adopt the role of the general manager who has the responsibility for the long-term health of the entire organization. The course would be taught primarily through the case method of instruction.

Course Objectives
1. Understand the nature of strategic competitiveness and develop the ability to analyze the competitive environment facing a firm, assess the attractiveness of the industry and isolate potential sources of competitive advantage and disadvantage.

2. Develop business level strategies by defining the type of advantage sought, scope of operations and activities required to deliver the chosen strategy. Assess the likely sustainability of firm strategies and competitive positions.

3. Discriminate among the types of data that general managers need to evaluate alternative scenarios.

1. Describe the Activities Involved in Strategy Formulation Versus Those Involved in Strategy Implementation.

...1. Describe the activities involved in strategy formulation versus those involved in strategy implementation. The strategy formulation refers to the process of choosing the most appropriate course of action for the realization of organizational goals and objectives and thereby achieving the organizational vision. The process of strategy formulation basically involves six main steps. The first step is developing a vision and mission. The key component of any strategy statement is to set the long term vision and mission of the organization. These are known that strategy is generally a medium for realization of organizational objectives. Objectives stress the state of being there whereas strategy stresses upon the process of reaching there. Strategy includes both the fixation of objectives as well the medium to be used to realize those objectives. Thus, strategy is a wider term which believes in the manner of deployment of resources so as to achieve the objectives. While fixing the organizational vision and mission, it is essential that the factors which influence the selection of objectives must be analyzed before the selection of mission. Once the mission and the factors influencing strategic decisions have been determined, it is easy to take strategic decision. The second and third steps are identifying an organization’s external opportunities and threats and determining internal strengths and weaknesses. These are to evaluate the general economic and industrial environment...

...The Nature of Strategy Implementation Successful strategy formulation does not guarantee successful startegy implementation. It is always more difficult to do something (strategy implementation) than to say you are going to do it (strategy formulation). Although inextricably linked, startegy implementation is fundamentally different from strategy fromulation. Strategy formulation and implementation can be contrasted in the following ways: * Strategy formulation is positioning forces before the action. * Strategy implementation is managing forces during the action. * Strategy formulation focuses on effectiveness. * Strategy implementation focuses in efficiency. * Strategy formulation is primarily an intellectual process. * Strategy implementation is primarily an operational process. * Strategy formulation requires good intuitive and analytical skills. * Strategy implementation requires special motivation and leadeship skills. * Strategy formulation requires coordination among a few individuals. * Strategy implementation requires coordination among many individuals. Management perspectives Implementation problems can arise because of the shift in responsibility, especially if SF decisions come as a surprise to middle- and lower-level managers. Therefore, it is essential to involve divisional and functional managers in strategy-formulation activities. Management Issues Central to Strategy Implementation * Establish annual objectives ...

Strategic Integration of Recruitment Practices

...management (HRM) practices and its integration to business is critical to achieve organisational strategic goals. However, little research has to date examined strategic integration in this specific human resource (HR) practice, and, therefore, little is known about the level and application of recruitment and selection strategic integration a situation that warrants greater investment due to the economic growth in India in a corresponding expansion of Indian enterprises. Consequently, this study investigates the level at which recruitment and selection practices integrate with business strategies and the relative effects of different levels of such strategic integration on organisational performance in 259 Indian enterprises. The results show the majority of Indian enterprises had a high level of recruitment and selection strategic integration in business strategy formulation and implementation. Moreover, the level of recruitment and selection strategic integration was positively related to growth in market share, profits and sales, employees’ satisfaction, employees’ productivity, and negatively related to employees’ turnover. The implications for HRM practitioners and further research are discussed. Introduction Recruitment and selection is the process of attracting individuals on a timely basis, in sufficient numbers and with appropriate qualifications. Following the initial selection of incumbents they are likely to again be chosen to develop their further interest in the...

Knowledge Management Through Stratetegic Management Process

...processes consist of formulating stages, implementation stages, and controlling stages. With a systematic strategic management approach, organizations are able to generate competitive advantage and achieve organizational objectives. This paper provides an approach for organization to manage KM through strategic management process. KM currently is a discipline which is growing very fast. Therefore to support business viability and competitiveness, organization needs to integrate fragmented landscape of KM with strategic management process. Keywords: Knowledge Management, Strategic Management. 1.0 INTRODUCTION According to Webb (1998), KM is the process of identification, optimization and active management of intellectual assets to create value, increase productivity and gain and sustain competitive advantage. Meanwhile, Murray (1998) said KM is a strategy that turns an organization’s intellectual assets and the talents of its members to produce new productivity, value and increase competitiveness. Therefore, we can conclude that KM is a discipline, designed to provide strategy, process, and technology to increase organizational learning. A part from that, strategy is the major plan to be undertaken and allocating resources to organization (Cannon, 1968). Aaker (1984) also suggested that, organization needs to assign people or a group of people to seize the responsibility for analysing new issues, such as KM and developing responsive strategies. This is due to the fact that KM is...

Strategic Management Process Paper

...scanning, strategic formulation, strategic implementation, evaluation, and control (University of Phoenix, 2015). These elements are relatable to the strategic management process. An example of Wal-Mart's strategy process will be covered in this reading as well. The strategic management process and why it is necessary for a company will be the covering elements of this paper (University of Phoenix, 2015). Environment Scanning Environmental scanning is a systematic process that interprets and surveys critical information to identify threats and external opportunities. An organization collects data internally, its competitors and the outer world. A company should then take the collection of data and readjust its strategies when the need is suitable. Gathering information about the world in which the business operates, focusing on competitors, and internally scan the organization is the key steps to conducting an environmental scan (Society for Human Resource Management, 2015). Strategy Formulation Strategy is a roadmap to business success and within that strategy, is strategy formulation. Strategy formulation is the process of developing the actual plan. A series of sequential executable steps have to be in organizing order. The reason that it is important, the steps be in order, is because the steps progress upon one another. The two process, which are on a continuous bases throughout strategy formulation, is environmental scanning and implementation. The order, in...

...business is subject to the same conditions, opportunities, and challenges when it comes to developing a competitive strategy. Yet, when the time comes for companies to actually put their strategies into practice, those that possess the ability to execute them effectively and sustainably are at an advantage. The key to success is therefore not only how a strategy is devised, but also how it is actually executed. Besides addressing the challenges associated with strategy development, discussions in recent years are increasingly dealing with problems of strategy execution. According to a study published in the Harvard Business Review, companies realize...

...Literature review of strategy implementation and strategy process frameworks Introduction Great strategies are worth nothing if they cannot be implemented (Okumus and Roper 1999). It can be extended to say that better to implement effectively a second grade strategy than to ruin a first class strategy by ineffective implementation. Less than 50% of formulated strategies get implemented (Mintzberg 1994; Miller 2002; Hambrick and Canella 1989). Every failure of implementation is a failure of formulation. The utility of any tool lies in its effective usage and so is the case with strategy. Strategy is the instrument through which a firm attempts to exploit opportunities available in the business environment. The performance of a firm is a function of how effective it is in converting a plan into action and executing it. Thus implementation is the key to performance, given an appropriate strategy. In literature, implementation has been defined as “the process by which strategies and policies are put into action through the development of programs, budgets and procedures” (Wheelan and Hunger pp15). This involves the design or adjustment of the organisation through which the administration of the enterprise occurs. This includes changes to existing roles of people, their reporting relationships, their evaluation and control mechanisms and the actual flow of data and information through the communication channels which support the enterprise (Chandler 1962; Hrebiniak and Joyce...

...1. Jelaskan implementasi strategi yang dapat dilakukan oleh perusahaan (berkaitan dengan tugas week 6 dan 7) dalam bentuk kebijakan manajemen dan operasi perusahaan! Policy-based management is an administrative approach that is used to simplify the management by establishing policies to deal with situations that are likely to occur. Policies are operating rules that can be referred to as a way to maintain order, security, consistency, or otherwise furth a goal or mission. For example, a town council might have a policy against hiring the relatives of council members for civic positions. Each time that situation arises, council members can refer to the policy, rather than having to make decisions on a case-by-case basis. In the automotive industry, policy-based management is used as an administrative tool throughout an enterprise or network, or on automated-machines that have multiple users. Policy-based management includes policy-based network management, the use of delineated policies to control access to and priorities for the use of resources. Styrategic Management: Dead or in Demand as Never Before

...along the way due to lack of proper strategy. Yes, I do believe that organizations with proper strategy implemented and managed stand a better chance and have better competitive advantage over their counterparts. Strategic management is used by organizations to analyze and learn from their internal and external environment. It is about going forward (where to from here) It is about establishing a strategic direction. It is about establishing a strategic direction Strategic management is also about implementing strategies that would satisfy customers. The nature of strategy, which needs to be managed, is formulated around the 5 Ps (Louw and Venter 2010:15) Plan, pattern, position, perspective and ploy. As a plan, strategy has been viewed as something that an organization has, and strategy as a perspective viewed as something that people do. Strategy is influenced by extra organizational practices and inter-organizational practices. Therefore there is a reciprocal relationship between intra and extra organizational strategic activities. - Strategy as a plan: Provides overall direction and course of action. As a plan, strategy formulation is a formal process. This approach ahs been criticized for being a rational, top-down approach, hoever research shows that formal planning contributes towards better strategic decision making. - Strategy as a position: concerns the determination of products. As a position, strategy looks downwards and outwards, towards...
