The Strawberry Baby

...The Strawberry Baby By Wanda Simms In the spring of May 1971, my older cousin Lilly, who was weeks from having her baby, took me on a bus trip to the Farmers Market downtown St. Louis. It was a warm sunny day and as usual, the fruit was eye pleasing to an 8yr old, the strawberries smelled so...oo, good, and I wanted to taste one as I always did when granny and I came here. I reached out picked up one and took a bite. It was sweet and delicious. I finished it off and got one more to eat on the bus ride home. I put it in the top right pocket of my jacket. I turned around and there was Lilly telling me it was time to go home. As we walked towards the exit, the stand attendant, an older Italian gentleman, came running and screaming “stop”,” stop”, that little girl stole a strawberry! Lilly quickly turned around and in a startled voice said “what”? He repeated that little girl stole a strawberry! I said, no I didn’t! I ate one, and he said it is in her pocket, Lilly checked me, and there it was a big juicy strawberry in my top right pocket. Boy was she scared and mad. The stand attendant said to me pointing his finger angrily at me , if you ever steal my fruit again I will call the police on you , I said sobbing with tears, I won’t do it again I am sorry. The bus ride home was very gloomy, Lilly cried the whole time clutching her stomach as if it was a purse. The next day when I arrived home from school, Granny informed me that Lilly had the baby...

Depending on the pathogens, it can be harmful for human; therefore, it is important to know what is contained in our food. A pathogen “is a biological agent that causes disease or illness to its host.” (www.sciencedaily.com/terms/pathogen.htlm) There are many ways foods can be in contact with pathogens. First of all, the air and soil has many pathogens and bacteria floating in it that can easily come in contact with our food. If the food is packaged, there may be pathogens from the packaged materials. Also pesticides used to preserve foods is very commonly used. Materials and Methods: First I chose to use a strawberry to determine the possible pathogens that could be on this piece of fruit. With a sterile swab that was dipped in distilled water, I swabbed a small section towards the top of the strawberry. I then took the swab and transferred it to my already sectioned agar plate that is labeled H2O. Next I used another sterile swab dipped in vinegar and swabbed a lower section of the fruit and transferred it to the appropriate section on my agar plate. Lastly I swabbed an even lower section of the strawberry with another sterile swab with lemon and transferred it to the appropriate section on my agar plate. After transferring all three washes to the agar plate, I placed the...

Adasdsadaca

...Holly Farm Sales Forecast: According to Gillian's forecasts, while there will be an increase in farm shop sales by 50%, there will be a decline in retail shops sales by 13.3% in 2004 (Table 1). However, these forecasts are unlikely to come true. Firstly, its retail shops sales has increased by 75% on average of each year, and its farm shop sales has increased by 28% on average each year for the latest five years. It may be unreasonable that she dramatically changes these recent growth trends on her forecast without any factors that could impact on both channels. Secondly, since the ice cream market in the UK is mature and stable (Table 2), sudden changes of previous trend hardly happen excepting entering strong new players into the region, spoiling the farm's reputation hugely and investing tremendously on the marketing for its farm shop. Moreover, in terms of Holly Farm's managing on its farm visitors, this sudden change of the number of visitors could lead to collapses of its operations. These reasons discussed above clearly show that Gillian's demand forecast is not reliable. Hence, they have to forecast in the other way. Line Extension: Gillian wishes to increase the number of ice cream flavours from four to ten. However, this line extension can cause the following problems. First of all, many products of relatively lower demand items would be abolished due to their expiration dates. In1999, the Ice Cream Alliance published the date of top ten ice cream flavour in the...

The first case of Kawasaki Disease (KD) presented itself in Japan in 1961, to a 4 year old boy who had the following symptoms high fever, bleeding lips, strawberry tongue and diffuse erythematous of the oral cavity and mucous membrane (Kawasaki, T., Naoe, S. 2014). Kawasaki Disease affects the coronary, small and medium-sized arteries in the body, affecting the blood supply to the muscles in the heart. Kawasaki Disease (KD) is the leading cause of heart disease in children (Laurito, M; Stazi, A; Delogu, A; … and Crea, F; 2014). Kawasaki disease is also known as Kawasaki Syndrome (KS) and mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome as it affects the skin, lymph nodes and mucous membranes in the mouth, nose and throat. The disease starts of with a high fever and a skin rash that results in peeling and while this can be scary to parents, it is treatable and most children recover without any side effects. Mcdonald’s Expands Globally While Adjusting Its Local Recipe

...Logistics Case Study: California Strawberry Competitiveness in Chicago, Paris and Tokyo. Professor: Jonathan M. SELTZER Submitted: 19.02.2016 Strawberries are popular worldwide due to their organoleptic qualities, nutrient content and versatility. The international trade of strawberries, fresh and processed, has grown in recent years with global sales of 1,533,000 tonnes in 2013, a 29% increase from 2006 according to data from Trade Map. This following report focuses on the ability of California’s strawberries to compete in the Chicago, Paris and Tokyo markets and the logistical details of their distribution to each market. CALIFORNIA STRAWBERRY PRODUCTION The following data comes from the California Strawberry Commission. California is the largest strawberry producing state in the US, which is the largest strawberry producing country in the world. In 2014, more than 2.3 billion pounds, equivalent to more than 1 million metric tons, of strawberries were harvested. This accounts for 88% of the nation’s strawberry production. Despite recent shrinking strawberry acreage, California continues as the leading strawberry producing region in the world and is expected to supply over 79% of the volume consumed in the U.S in 2016. Due to its coastal climate, moderate temperature and rich soil, California is capable of producing strawberries year-round with peak crop harvest availability between April and July. It should be noted that California’s ability to maintain its...

Eleanor Rigby

...Professor Wilson September 6, 2015 “Eleanor Rigby” This song was written for many purposes in my opinion. I can see numerous themes as I read through the lyrics. The first theme that I noticed is the literal meaning. I could evaluate this from the very first line of the song. It states, “ah look at all the lonely people” (Beatles). Literally, I interpret this as meaning that there are many lonely people in this world. People who have no one to share their lives with but also people who choose to keep all their feelings inside of them. These lonely people shelter themselves from others emotionally and won’t let anyone get the chance to know them. I have seen this quite often growing up. I feel as if The Beatles may have been referring to both of these types of people: physically alone and emotionally drawn people. I believe that there are more meanings to the lyrics in this song though. I can see this song referring to religion as well. This song states that, “Father McKenzie, writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear no one comes near” and “no one was saved” (Beatles). I feel as if a powerful message is said here to the religious listeners of this song. Do I think this song is attacking the religious values of some? That might possibly be the case, however, I can see the argument in an array of spectrums. Lastly, a theme that stood out to me is when the song stated, “wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door” (Beatles). I think that some people...

Tim and Funding

...Few memories as a failure on a major project from half a decade ago still vividly remains in memories. As a Research Assistant to Tim, it was my first paid job. Tim, an Engineer, worked in silos and had driver social style to his heart beat. He only communicated the expectations without delving in the details that he had in his mind. Even though the Office space was a closed knit space for 16 students, Tim seldom hung out with people to build personal relationships. He only interacted with others when there was a need. His lack of explanation on why the project was needed had left me wondering regarding purpose and design aspects of the new programming project. I struggled on how to effectively design the project and often sought help from other people, who recommended me that the project needed investment in new programming platform as old platform was incapable of achieving the project objectives. After making almost no progress on the project and wasting time in attempts to make old platform workable, I received a vehement email from Tim, stating that XYZ Inc. was deciding to scale back on funding, as no progress reports were submitted. I was shocked to learn that I was even expected to submit progress reports at the end of quarter on the undertaken project in which I had neither any clue nor communication. As an amiable person, I was too quick to reach an agreement with Tim on project deliverables. I had thought that I would be receiving friendly advice and guidance from...
