Determine how Five Guys’ philosophy sets it apart from other fast-food chains.
“Do you want to flip burgers your whole life!” How many times has a parent said this? Even though this is usually said out of sarcasm this line of work has been very good for the Murrells. The founder and owner of Five Guys Burgers and Fries Jerry Murrell started with a business plan of keeping their business limited and simple and sticking by his philosophy of providing a quality product at a reasonable price in a clean environment. Five guys spends the most out of its competers to product a quality product. When Jerry Murrell began franchising he was just a small burger operation with an almost cultish following in Northern Virginia. Today, the business is, by some, estimated heading in the direction of the $1 billion in value mark.
Analyze the original values of the start-up company and how it remains strong today. During the early years the Murrells’ worked long and hard to prefect their product. And to this day Five Guys serves up made-to-order burgers with beef that’s never frozen and absurdly large servings of hand-cut fries. Murrell stated that each topping was a family decision and something that was taken very serious. Having accomplished creating a successful product the Murrells now focus on maintaining this quality by paying attention to detail. One way that the Murrells ensure that the product quality is maintained is by writing detailed franchise contracts. The details of the contract go as far as to state the number of bacon strips or pickles that are placed on the burger or as requested by the customer. Another valued preparation technique is that they toast their buns on a grill, even though a bun toaster is faster and cheaper, it doesn't give that caramelized taste that the Murrells value. The Murrells leave no bun unturned.
Enumerate three (3) factors that contributed to Five Guys’ success in such a short time and what effect, if any, external markets had on these factors. 1-The customer is the main source of advertising. The Murrells live by the motto of, treat people right and make them happy and they will sell for you. The Murrells also shun national advertising campaigns which they find fake. They rely on word of mouth advertising. When President Obama moved to the White House, a Five Guys staffer suggested sending him a T-shirt. “That’s cheap!” Murrell shot back. Playing coy worked, and soon Obama, trailed by TV cameras, stopped by a store and he ordered a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, fresh jalapeños, and mustard—a classic example of Five Guys’ formula that sells 2 million burgers a week and had them named Zagat’s “best fast food burger” for 2010. 2- From the onset one of Murrell’s business concepts was that he wanted people to know that a portion of the profits are rolled back into the product, not the décor. All stores are very simple in design and uniform, Red and white tiles, bags of potatoes on the floor and simple pictures on the walls. 3-One of the first factors of success was their fries. The delicious and plentiful serving of Idaho potatoes that are obtained north of the 42 parallel are a perfect example of the Murrells philosophy of not cutting corners.
Assess how ethical and social practices are part of the Five Guys’ culture and provide examples to support your choices.
Since the beginning the Murrell’s have always felt a social responsibly. One way that the company facilitates their social and ethical beliefs is by implementing various employee incentive programs which are designed to maintain the quality of the product while instilling a sense of ownership and responsibility in every employee. This sense of ownership is then translated into employee monetary incentive bonuses for stores that score well on quality audits.
Jerry and Janie Murrell and their sons are frequently questioned how they turned Five Guys into such a huge success. The formula probably includes a combination of their philosophy of quality, value of their customers and their ethical and social business practices. Someone once told Mr. Murrell that anyone can make money in the food business as long as you have a quality product, reasonable prices, and a clean place. Mr. Murrell took this statement to heart and into his business plan along with leaving no detail untouched and nothing is too small to receive attention.

...Lab Research Report 1: Procedures in the Physical Sciences Ertugrul Alsan  Dr. Zahra Paraste Panah 05/05/2013 . SCI110 1. Astronomers use indirect methods to measure stellar distances. While triangulation and observation of parallax can be used for nearby stars, these methods fail for very distant galaxies and star systems. For these, astronomers use Cepheid variables – stars that change their luminosity in a known manner over precisely calculated intervals. If one Cepheid whose distance is known appears brighter than another whose distance is to be calculates, then the apparent magnitude and period of oscillation of the dimmer object can be used to calculate its distance relative to the brighter Cepheid (Freedman and Kaufmann, 2008, p. 638). In physics, mass of neutrinos is estimated indirectly through the phenomenon of neutrino oscillation. These particles are of three types – electron, muon and tau neutrinos – and they interchange (oscillate) between different types with mathematically defined probabilities. The mixture of neutrino types in a set of observations can be used to estimate upper and lower bounds on their mass values (Escrihulea, Tortola and Valle, 2011, p. 1). In chemistry lattice formation enthalpy is measured indirectly through the Born-Haber cycle. This is a stepwise calculation method in which a series of enthalpy changes is used to derive the final value. The lattice formation energy is deduced from the values of......

...BUS508 Competitive Strategies Corporate culture is seen in an organization’s behavior and its structure (Moore). When a company is formed it is generally formed with a plan which was founded based on a particular set of ideas of how the organization will operate. This plan is probably based on the founder’s ideas and/or the values that the founder holds to be important. These ideologies are often the foundation of the company. And from these foundational ideologies a corporate culture of a company is formed. This is why each company’s culture has its own unique attitudes, ideas and attributes that often times enhances the competitors culture which is not always a negative since both companies corporate cultures have shown to support a successful business. 1.Determine how each corporate culture differs from the other. In the fast food industry the corporate cultures can be as different as night and day. While one company may believe that training is time and money well spent another may believe that training, whether it be cross training or promotional training, is a waste of time and money and that most employees will better serve the company by cooking more food. In other words better the bottom line not the employee. However the above mentioned “bottom line” mentality is not part of the culture at Chipotle or Chick fil A. Both of these companies hire with the mindset of hiring to promote and grow that employee. “The key to our success there is the strength of...

...Union estimates that at least 200,000 Americans are unjustly terminated every year and states that it receives more complaints from workers being mistreated by their employers than from people claiming mistreatment by the government (Baker, 2010). However, there are emptions to every rule, law is left to interpretation, and frankly, it depends. The most widespread exception to EAW is when the termination of employee violates State or National policy (Muhl, 2001). This is the most widely accepted of termination exception because it is recognized in 43 of the 50 States (Muhl, 2001). For example, employees cannot be fired as punishment for self-organization as ruled by the Supreme Court in NRLB v. Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp 301 US.1, 45-46 (1937) (Halbert & Ingulli, 2012). A person cannot be fired because of their race, national origin, color, religion, sex, age or disability through the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In Bowman v. State Bank of Keysville 229 Va. 534 (1985) a Virginia court asserted its refusal to condone retaliatory discharges by the State Bank of Keysville (Radin & Werhane, 2003).” Workers are further protected by Whistleblower Acts such as Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) which protects whistleblowers who report financial misconduct of corporations. ...Applied Research Technologies Margaret Celeste Moten Project Management – BUS 518 David Plumer Strayer University January 22, 2012 Abstract The Filtration Unit at Applied Research Technologies, Inc. is facing a small crisis. Management must either turn things around or dissolve the unit. This paper discusses the leadership styles exhibited by two managers, Peter Vyas and Cynthia Jackson, as they decide whether to accept a proposal for $2 million to re-launch a previously failed product. The paper then closes with a summary of my personal leadership style and a real world example of leadership in action. Applied Research Technologies Peter Vyas’ Leadership Style Peter Vyas is exhibiting participative leadership. Individuals using this style of leadership place low emphasis on the task but consideration or support for the follower is high (Lewis, 2003, p. 82). Vyas’ leadership style is in line with the culture of the organization – innovation and entrepreneurship. He gives the “what” but allows the team to come up with the “how”. Vyas is concerned with high performance but he’s equally, if not more, concerned with making sure the emotional needs of the team are being met. Participative leaders value their people and encourage them to stay involved and share their ideas. The leader actively seeks input from the team when making decisions or solving problems but retains the final say when choices are made. Research has shown that participative......

According to as of 2010 The Hershey Company (HSY) is worth $5.67 billion. With a history that goes back to the late 1800’s it is safe to say that Hershey is doing something right. In the case titled Hershey’s Sweet Mission states that “the company defines its mission in terms of its relationship with all stakeholders.” They go on to list the important groups that help make up the success of their organization and more importantly the case focuses on the employees (Noe & Hollenbeck, 2011 p55).” “Aligned employees should share values (Noe & Hollenbeck, 2011 p55),” the employee’s of any company should want the same things and a good outcome, not only for themselves but for the company as well. Redesign of Performance Management In the case states “We are growing together by sharing knowledge and unwrapping human potential in an environment of mutual respect(Noe & Hollenbeck, 2011 p55).” This statement can be interpreted in different ways. This statement implies that they are growing and learning together, and it also implies how Hershey treats its employee’s in the process. This theory is something that doesn’t really need any revamping or redesigning. The statement implies that...
