Film Review: Street Fight
The film Street Fight follows the story of Cory Booker and his campaign towards being the mayor of Newark, New Jersey. Corey Booker is a young, 32 year old city councilman, and a Yale graduate. In this 2002 campaign Cory Booker faces a tough rival: Sharp James. Sharpe James is a local man who grew up in Newark. James was in the army, he was a former high school teacher, but most importantly James has been in office since 1986, equaling sixteen served years as mayor of New Jersey’s largest city. This documentary presents major tactics used throughout this political campaign, all of which deal with the major problems in the community: power, race, and poverty.
In this documentary, the problem with power is simply that Sharpe James has too much of it. Pablo Fonseca, the former head of code enforcement for the city of Newark, clearly sums up how powerful Sharp James is: “If you’re …show more content…
Cory’s light skin and education make him an easy target for racist comments that not only include being called white, but also being Jewish. In the film Sheria Brown mentions an incident that she had with an older woman: “This is what has kept us, all this time, separated and divided amongst ourselves. Direct racist comments coming from the black people, an older lady, who also told me, oh who are you voting for the white man or the black man?” This incident shows the importance of race throughout this political campaign. Cory was able to have a good education and some people question the idea of a well-educated man running an impoverished city. James made this campaign about race in order to distract the people of Newark form the rise of poverty and rise of unemployment in the city. Instead of focusing on the education of their kids, the people of Newark “hate” at the fact that Cory was fortunate enough to get his own education and as a result become

Raging Bull

...Derrick Lee Introduction to Film 11/16/2013 Saturday A.M Raging Bull Film Analysis My reaction to the film Raging Bull was a positive one. The film displayed a troubled fighter looking to escape his personal reality by fighting in a boxing ring. Martin Scorcese directed the film it was to be his Swan song from movie making. Robert Deniro starred as Jake Lamotta a troubled individual who didn’t feel comfortable in real life situation but once he enter the ring it became his world. Joe Pesci costarred in the movie as his brother/trainer this was Pesci first big break as a film actor he had done mostly minor films prior to the making of the film. The movie takes the viewer on a rollercoaster ride through Jakes life from a wannabe fighter into one of most fierce men to enter the ring. The film also showed his insecurities out of the ring with the women in his life. He was very insecure in relationship from males and females mostly from the women in his life he didn’t trust them at all. He met and married his second wife while she was just a teen which added more fuel to the fire of an already insecure man. His decisions out of the ring made him a very volatile inside of the ring he threw a fight on purpose just to get a shot at a title. His decision to throw the fight almost cost him his career because it was so obvious to the spectators the boxing commission had to suspend him. Jake also had several memorable...

Ivanhoe Martin is the main person of the movie, and is played by the famous Jimmy cliff. Ivanhoe lived on the countryside for the most of his life, until he decided to move to the city to pursuit his dream of becoming a famous reggae singer. He soon realizes that the life in the city is tough. He is taken advantage of by people before he learns to live in the big city. Before he starts the singing career he will have to settle down and get a job. But getting a normal job in the city is very difficult to find, and in his search for a job he both goes to the rich neighbor hood and the poor slum. It is very interesting to see in this movie how the city is described and divided in this movie, and it is worth noticing that even though it is the same city, he actually travels from the third world to the western life style. It is also described how the western society in Kingston can control the third world area in form the police. Though the police have...

Karl Marx

...Karl maex A Marxist Analysis of an Italian Block Buster - By Vrinda Aggarwal Post the cold war Communism and Marxism remained mere philosophies which couldn't stand the test of time. They were either “impractical" modes of organizing economy and polity or rather were theories which were more advanced than the ages in which they were tested. It is thus the farsightedness of Marx which makes his theory extremely relevant for people to at least study. Marx principally focused on observation and historical analysis. According to him there were two Classes in the society - The Bourgeoisie and the Proletariat. The former was the class which owned all the resources and organized production, the later is the laboring class who own nothing but their own physical power to run the machines. Thus both the producers and the workers are in a symbiotic relationship. Still we see that the capitalist can survive for a longer time without the worker as compared to the vice versa, putting the workers in a compromising position. Thus in the fight of wage determination, the capitalists tend to win, thereby fixing the wage rate which is sufficient for survival (which according to Marx s living like cattle). According to the Marxist ideology, “when the capitalists and the laborers suffer equally, the worker suffers in his very existence, the capitalist in the profit on his dead mammon. The worker...

Sholay

...ID 201035872 Sholay Sholay is the Hindi action-adventure film that was shot by Ramesh Sippy. It is considered as the best example of the Hindi masala movie. Masala movie is a mix of several movie genres, which usually include tragedy, comedy, adventure and action. The plot of the film is about Thakur Baldev Singh, former police officer (played by Sanjeev Kumar) trying to capture the main antagonist of the movie Gabbar Singh, a gang leader (played by Amjad Khan) by hiring two thieves, who are also the main protagonists of the movie Veru (played by Dharmendra) and Jai (played by Amitabh Bachchan). Although this movie is considered as the highest box-office grossing Hindi movie up to this time, I personally did not enjoy this movie. In this essay, I will present a brief plot of the movie and then reflect my view towards this movie. In my reflection, I will examine the genres used, analyze some ideas that were presented in this movie and express the terend of masala movies in the 1970s. The film starts with Thakur Baldev Singh ordering to his fellow police officer to find two thieves Veru and Jai. When the fellow police officer questions the need for those two thieves, the movie presents to us a flashback of Thakur, when he was convoying those two detainees by a train, when bandits attack it. However, they fail to seize the train due to help Thakur receives from two thieves. After that they are found by Thakur and asked to capture Gabbar Singh, a local bandit, for a payment...

Bra Boys Task 2

...[pic] The Bra Boys are a gang of young blokes who enjoy their surf amongst the beaches of Maroubra on New South Wales who occasionally get made out to be something they are not by the media. Main gang members Sunny and Koby Abberton have made a documentary to tell their side of the story and prove their innocence. Today I will be discussing and reviewing whether or not it is true that the "Bra Boys" are depicted by the media as being maligned. Within the Bra Boys documentary they are stating themselves not to be a gang, but a brotherhood. What kind of brotherhood walks around the streets late night getting into lights supposedly "protecting" their place in town and the beach? I personally think that the gang have done immature things in the past which media have taken too far to make them look bad but in saying that 1 also believe that they are a great bunch of blokes who deep down just want to enjoy the surf Media obligations such as a murder within the bra boys got fully blown out of proportion and the media made false accusations to the public. I am supporting the case that the bra boys are not as bad as made out to be. December 24th 2002 On this night in December an alleged brawl between the notorious surf gang the bra boys and many of the local off duty police. It started out as a normal night with a few of he boys together all having fun, having a few drinks celebrating a fellow bra boy and close friends birthday. The bra boys party consisting of approximately...

The early market was dominated by small mom-and-pop rental shops that bought a few copies of hit movies and rented them in a small regional area. For a while, video-rental stores had a tinge of disrespectability because many of them rented adult videos. Then, Blockbuster Video went national with large, bright, well-lit stores. To remain family-oriented, the chain does not carry videos with anything more than an ―R‖ rating. Blockbuster quickly took over the market. The original system pioneered the use of bar codes. Customers carried a bar-coded ID card and movie cases were printed with specific codes. The computer system made checkout easy and enabled people to return videos afterhours simply by placing them in a drop box. The company initiated a three-night, $3 rental program, making it easier to rent videos for the weekend. A History of Growth and Problems Blockbuster was started by David P. The three films that would help me conduct this research and meet my aims are Candyman, Friday the 13th and a nightmare on Elm Street. By looking at these films, I would be able to see whether all the elements that come under genre is applied e.g. iconography, setting etc. The creation of horror films was done to make people scared and frightened but also tap into our hidden fears. This could be done by looking at the most common thing that scare people. For example, The fly, David...

Adapting Plays Into Movies

...array of differences, as well as similarities. When researching a topic such as this, one must go beyond reading. One must not only dive into a script or a periodical or academic journal, one must immerse themselves into the films that have come about as a result of the transformation of turning a play into a cinematic experience. When going about researching this topic, I watched the movie Chicago (Dir. Rob Marshall, 2002) as well as looked over the original Broadway script (By Jon Kander, Fredd Ebb, and Bob Fosse 1975). The original Broadway production opened June 3, 1975, at the 46th Street Theatre and ran for 936 performances. Chicago's 1996 Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and is the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history. After all the success, What better way to continue the magic of this thrilling show than create a movie out of it? The story tells of two women (Roxie Hart and Velma Kelley) who live in Chicago and are responsible for murdering their husbands and must fight to get out of prison, in order to pursue their dreams...

Masculinity in Chuck Palahniuk's Work

...Introduction Mass culture would have most readers and viewers believing that the Post-modern American male is a simple creature. Common stereotypes margin male satisfaction in a minimal setting – a Lazyboy armchair in a lounge with a flat screen TV playing ‘the game’ along with primal banter regarding women. More often than not, this is washed down with a beer. With this array of comfort and leisure we are inclined to believe that male lifestyle has reached its peak on the timeline of satisfaction. This was until David Fincher took Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Fight Club and made it into a big budget Hollywood blockbuster. With the male demographic being the hardest to pinpoint in the literature sense, David Fincher’s adaptation helpfully put Palahniuk’s thoughts into the cinematic forefront. This increased the popularity of Palahniuk’s other works and placed him in the cannon of Post-modern American fiction. It is the issues of modern masculinity that grasps critics’ attention more so than any other Palahniuk themes. It is very apparent that masculinity has changed as a natural progression of modernisation. This dissertation will analyse masculinity as it is depicted in Palahniuk’s writings and explore Palahniuk’s intentions and beliefs. I will interpret the responses of select critics in order to gain some understanding of what Palahniuk deems to be the ideal model of masculinity in the modern world, beneath his post-modern twists, transgressive characterization and...

From what I can tell, the narrator or main character, Holden, isn’t very optimistic about his life. When I first read a couple lines of this paragraph, I thought to myself “this book is going to be terrible” because Holden didn’t really grab my attention like I thought. |     Chapter 2    “ Have you yourself communicated with them? …..   And how do you think they’ll take the news? He exits; his white suit glints in the sun as he surveys the landscape from behind impenetrable sunglasses. In his hand, a metallic attaché case. Members of a SWAT team manoeuvre silently behind a fence. The driver takes out his cell phone and dials. A man’s voice answers. The driver says simply ‘I’m here.’ The latest Hollywood blockbuster? This is the opening of ‘The Hostage’, produced by BMW and their former ad agency, Fallon, employing A-list director John Woo. To understand why this and seven other BMW films were made, one need only look to the challenges facing the long-time prime brand-advertising venue: TV.
