In Anthem by Ann Rand, Equality was assigned street sweeper as his job. He was not given this job as a mistake, the society realized he was a very smart man. The council assigns him the job of street sweeper because they knew he is and thought of him as a threat, also if he was a street sweeper he would have no say in the society. The society in Anthem is not based off of people earning their way in society. The people don’t earn their jobs they are given to them. The society selects your job by how smart you are. The smarter you are the worse of a job you will be given. They notice Equality is smart so they give him the terrible job of street sweeper. Equality wants to be at the top, but will never be because they realize his wittiness.
