February 2, 2010 STRENGTH QUEST EXERCISE We will explore and review the findings from the strength quest exercise that was taken online and give a brief description of my supervisors view on leadership skills. I will compare my personal leadership skills in contrast to my supervisor’s ideals. Then I will identify my leadership skills and how they are applied in my nursing practice based on the findings of our exercise.

The development of modern nursing in the areas of education, philosophy, and wisdom has evolved with help form many nursing leaders. The complex and dynamic nature of global health care is constantly changing and providing new opportunities in the nursing profession. In today’s world, nurses assume many responsibility specifically leadership and management in the work place. The leadership roles extent from bedside nursing to the nurse executive with their ultimate focus on the patient’s comfort and care. To be a successful leader one should posses qualities of responsibility, honesty, effective communication, and good judgment with problem solving skills. A nurse leader not only can make a difference in patient’s life but can also create a teamwork environment with open communication, feedback, and goal accomplishment. In order to become an effective leader one should identify their own strengths and weaknesses to improve patient’s outcome. Thus, by sharing knowledge and collaborating with professors, managers, and peers; the nursing leader is there for increasing his/her leadership skill.

Strength Quest Findings The signature themes that identified my profile in the exercise were the learner, responsibility, developer, inculder, and empathy (Strength Quest, 2009). Hence people who are talented in the

Fitness Training

...These are part of a new trend in the strength and conditioning field called "functional training". Definition Functional training is the action of training "function", a general term that meaning "role or duty". Functional training is the science of training the body to meet the specific demands of life and sports. It is based on 1) the principle of specificity and 2) muscle function. The principle of specificity also known as SAID (Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands) means that the body responds and adapts specifically to the type and amount of physical demands under which it is placed. In other words, you only improve what you've specifically trained. Since muscle form dictates the role and function of each muscle, muscle needs to be trained the way it is designed to function. Origin Functional training is nothing new and comes primarily from the rehabilitation field. For many decades, therapists have been experimenting with ways of helping their patients regain function. Their goal is to retrain muscles to work properly using special exercises. In their quest to help their patients to become more functional, they have a developed functional training approach. Traditional vs. Functional Traditional strength training usually consists of trying to develop strength and build muscle through isolating specific muscle groups. This type of training could be called dysfunctional training and only develop segmental strength. Traditional strength training is adequate for building muscle...

Who Is Gilgamesh A Hero

...To fully answer the question depends on one’s definition of strength. In a macho, ultra masculine sense in which strength is defined as one’s ability to do as one pleases and be tough, he is definitely weaker due to his friendship, but due to the fact that he no longer wants what he wanted before. Enkidu is sent to to tame Gilgamesh’s “stormy-heart.” Before he was free to do as he pleased because he had no one to oppose him, so “neither the father’s son/ nor the wife of the noble; neither the mother’s daughter/ nor the warrior’s bride was safe” whereas now Enkidu satisfies him in a way this had not, so he stops. To many, this would seem to be a lose of power, an inability to exercise his macho-man strength, but in terms of strength of heart...

Tennyson in General

...Poetry also has similar medieval and mythical features throughout, putting a twist on known legendary tales ensuring the real meaning is seen to the reader or his preferred ending. In the dramatic monologue Ulysses, Ulysses is supposed to be speaking and expressing his thoughts and feelings to the silent listeners. He is standing before the royal palace of Ithaca and speaks before the mariners, who had been his fellow during his long journey to Troy. Ulysses has become old but it is the knowledge and experience which he has gathered on his travels that urges him on even in the old age to sail in quest of more. He knows that a life spent in idleness is no life at all. "It little profits that an idle king, By this still hearth, among these barren crags," Just a sword losses its polish and gets rusty when it is kept out of use, so energy will be dulled and blunted if we do not exercise it. He is perfectly aware that knowledge is vast and unlimited and our life on earth is too short to learn everything. Even a number of lives taken together would be too short for gaining all knowledge. So far he is concerned he has a single life to live. And of this single life to a greater part has already been spent. Hence he is determined to make the best of every moment of the remaining years of his life. To him an hour spent in some profitable work means an hour saved from the silence of death. But the monologue of Ulysses reaches to the point of climax, when he inspires his sailors and makes...

Life Styles Inventory (Lsi)

...GM591 PREPARATION GUIDE: LIFE STYLES INVENTORY(LSI) Introduction: Thinking and Behavior "The quest for leadership is first an inner quest to discover who you are” (p.391).[1] --Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner--- Self-awareness is foundational to effective leadership and organization success[2]. Research in leadership and organizational behavior indicates that managers who are blind to who they are, and to the effects they have on other people in their organizations, place their effectiveness and their careers at risk. A frequently cited axiom is "the first commandment of leadership is to know thyself." For example, in their studies of managerial and executive derailment, the Center for Creative Leadership found that successful managers: (1) understand their values, personal styles, and strengths and weaknesses; (2) know the impact of these values, styles, and strengths and weaknesses on their ability to effectively work with others and achieve their goals; and (3) are quick to reflect upon and learn from their own experiences. Despite these advantages, we often resist opportunities to increase our self-awareness or to acknowledge error. We fear that learning something new about ourselves will be painful -- doing so may require us to change our treasured and habitual ways of seeing, thinking, and behaving. Self-awareness is also an important barometer to ensure that even the best leadership practices don't become destructive. As Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner caution...

Action Plan for Optimal Health and Wellness

...Action Plan for Optimal health and Wellness Josue Ramirez SCI/163 May 23, 2013 Dr. Sara Love Action Plan for Optimal Health and Wellness To achieve optimal health and wellness we must be able to incorporate and balance the six dimensions and/or elements of health; Physical, spiritual, social, intellectual, emotional and environmental. We must change our attitudes, beliefs and our unhealthy behaviors. Change is never easy, in fact the majority it is quire difficult, taking at least five tries before succeeding in changing the unhealthy behavior (Donatelle, p. 17, 2011). Increasing society’s awareness about the effects of these elements puts us on a path to optimal health and wellness. Top Three Elements Three elements we would increase in society are physical, spiritual and environmental. Although we agreed social wellness was is important we believed that taking care of our environment would impact both our physical and spiritual elements, especially if we committed ourselves to actively cleaning up our neighborhoods and communities. As we should be exercising at five days a week for at least twenty minutes a day and eating well balanced meals, learning more about taking care of our environment would produce the knowledge of creating a healthier environment to live in. Like taking on the physical aspect of walking through our neighborhoods picking up trash or going door to door letting our neighbors know of the benefits...

Steroids

...Anabolic Steroids: A Perceived Means to Perfection At what point does the quest for perfection become an obsession? In the world of athleticism, the point of mania is usually when a person turns to performance enhancement by means of ergogenic aids. An ergogenic aid is anything that enhances a person’s athletic abilities. Examples of ergogenic aids are vitamins, foods, caffeine, and the most controversial anabolic steroids. Anabolic Steroids have sparked worldwide interest in the media because of the potential dangers associated with usage and moreover the fact that steroids are illegal in the professional sports arena. Anabolic steroids are classified as ergogenic aids, because they are chemically made substances that promote increased stamina when training, resulting in greater amounts of fat free mass and overall strength. The use of anabolic steroids has evolved into further drug experimentation and dependence, destroying the most critical aspect and fundamental of training “quality vs. quantity,” thus creating a “by any means necessary” athletic society. What Are the Affects of Steroid Use on Athletic Performance? Over the last five years several allegations and indictments have been made against athletes for their use of performance enhancing drugs. According to Steven M. Cohen, “Athletes use these drugs to enhance athletic performance, but not in the manner one might assume. Anabolic steroids won't make an athlete “better” at his or her sport. Steroids aren't...

Masculinity In The Dominican Culture

...the Dominican culture, there is a positive correlation between masculinity and machismo, and one begins to see the potentially harmful side effect that comes with men having these such high ideals of masculinity. The exaggeration of masculinity makes men feel powerful and often causes them to feel superior to women and other men in society. Across different cultures, masculinity is socially constructed; people in such societies are the ones that tell men how to act according to societal norms. Society sets attributes and roles for men to follow, and a person is judged depending on how far they deviate from the typical definition of masculinity. One of the traits that comes with masculinity is being independent, and having the ability to exercise power. Males believe that they are able to “assert their masculinity through work” (Nancy Lopez 189). Since men grow up...

Common People Persuasive Speech Analysis

...and fifty years. The virtues that our forefathers had held self-evident, the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, still ring true within the hearts of the American people. Their resonating message, however, has not found itself within the walls of our Capitol in perhaps just as long. No longer are we lead by those of outstanding moral direction, or by those who move the hearts of millions. The United States, finding itself within yet another crisis, will not overcome its own hubris. I stand here today, to warn not only you, the People, of what happens within your Capital, but also those who have succumbed to the seductive ways of modernity. The modern ideal politician is not one who will lead the Country with bravery and strength, but one who will serve as a marionette to those of great wealth and status. I hold these truths to be self-evident: that our once great Nation conceived in the notions of democracy and liberty, has now found itself to be a Nation contrived with the idea that the common man has no business running himself. A truth, which I find to be the most disgusting truth of all, that has become all to comforting for those who reside themselves with careers inside the walls of our Capital. The real power in this once Great Nation is no longer held with the people, a notion it had founded itself upon. Nay, the power can be sought after, not within the common People of the Nation nor the Congress, Executives, or Judiciaries found inside our Capital....

Instructional Leadership

...Effective school leadership today must combine the traditional school leadership duties such as teacher evaluation, budgeting, scheduling, and facilities maintenance with a deep involvement with specific aspects of teaching and learning. Effective instructional leaders are intensely involved in curricular and instructional issues that directly affect student achievement (Cotton, 2003). The writer of this paper acknowledges that school principals should play the role of instructional leaders, not just a school manager. The reality is that are many demands on a principals time and management skills making it difficult for most of them to spend time in classrooms, when performing teacher evaluation. Principals often make sure that teachers have the opportunities for professional developments, since they themselves rarely have any time to directly affect their teacher’s growth. The approach of sharing instructional leadership with teachers can present some organization challenges. The writer understood from this course that Communication is critical in a principal’s job. A leader must be clear, consistent in communication with students, staff, parents and community which, is imperative to the role of a principal. Similar to the teaching and reinforcement of math and reading skills, policies, procedures, and expectations need to be taught, practiced, and reinforced to students and staff. The writer acknowledges that the reinforcement of policies and procedures with discussions...

Mandala

...E D U C AT I O N A L I N N O VAT I O N Creative Learning: The Mandala as Teaching Exercise Margaret Cole Marshall, MS, APRN, BC ABSTRACT Faculty committed to undergraduate education have discovered the need to address teaching strategies that focus on the new generation of students. In teaching an undergraduate course on Nursing the Client with a Mental Illness, the affective domain of learning is used to develop interpersonal competence, self-awareness, and self-reflection. The teaching technique used is an experiential exercise that asks students to create group mandalas using art materials on circular pieces of butcher-block paper. The mandala concept is derived from the Buddhist tradition and means “circle” or “center” in Sanskrit. Carl Jung introduced this technique to the United States and incorporated it into his therapy. As a creative, active learning strategy, the mandalas helped the faculty meet the clinical objectives for the course and the learning needs of a new generation of students. They also helped students learn about Eastern philosophy, group process, self-awareness, and Jungian therapy.
