1. What industry standards body and standards series numbers do you need to reference for Ethernet applications and cabling?
A: The IEEE is used as the standard for Ethernet applications and cabling. It is part of the 802.3 series of standards and includes applications such as 1000Base-T, 1000Base-SX, 10GBase-T, and 10GBase-SR.
2. What are the different types of category 6 cables and what should be recommended for this network?
A: There are two types of category 6 cables, Cat-6 and Cat-6a
I would recommend a Cat-6a for this network since its intended use is for 10 Gigabit Ethernet with a 500MHz bandwidth support.
3. What cable would you recommend to offer the best shielding performance?
A: I would recommend a Cat-6a (STP Cable) for this project. My recommendation is based on this cables capability to protect the network from EMI and to operate at 10Base-T.

4. What type of cable would you use for the horizontal spaces and vertical links?
A: As for the horizontal spaces, riser-rated cabling is more durable. However, for this project I would recommend a plenum cabling system to prevent toxic fumes if caught on fire. The client is planning to route the cable thought the same space used for air circulation and HVAC.
For the Vertical links, I would recommend implementing a rise-related cabling to avoid fore to be spread between floors. “Plenum rated cables can be used in the riser, BUT riser cables cannot be used in Plenum spaces.”

5. What would you look for in trying to find fault if you had the following NEXT and FEXT problems in 1Gbps links and difficulty meeting 10Gbps performance requirements?
A: When finding fault in NEXT; the crosstalk is usually detected or found at the same end of the cable generating the signal and it is most common between 60 and 90 feet of the transmitter. On the

...Carlyle Brown Network Protocols and Standards Week 3 Homework 1. When was the first major standard describing a structured cabling system released? c. 1995 2. Why is balance an issue in UTP cables, and what is TCL? i. The balance or symmetry of the signal over the wire pairs helps minimize unwanted leakage of the signal. ii. TCL - Transverse Conversion Loss - The TCL measurement is obtained by applying a common-mode signal to the input and measuring the differential signal level on the output. a. TCL is sometimes called LCL (Longitudinal Conversion Loss). The ELTCLT value (expressed in dB) is the difference between the TCTL and the differential mode insertion loss of the pair being measured. TCTL is the loss from a balanced signal at the near-end to the unbalanced signal at the far end. Section 2-2 1.
