Student-Caregiver Scholarship Hello, I’m La’Ronica Craven a sophomore at Wells College and I care for my great grandma, Zelda Klaczko, three times a week. She is a retired, very polite, strong-willed, independent woman that doesn’t like to ask for help or rely on anyone, that has volunteered at a local church in Camillus for several years. My great grandma had a stroke on April 26th, 2018 the day before my uncle Doug passed away on April 27th 2018 from cancer. With finals right around the corner, I had to learn how to grieve, cope, and adjust to caring for my great grandma three days out of the week, on-top of my part-time job and studying for finals that started on May 7th. I definitely overworked myself the last couple of weeks of school. Though it wasn’t easy, I was able to adjust to my new lifestyle without my uncle and with caring for great grandma. Due to stress, grieving, being a full-time student, being a caregiver for my great grandma, and working part-time at Wegmans, I had gotten very little sleep, but despite all of this I was able to ace all of my finals. I’ve been there to help her get better and feel some sort of normalcy after both of the devastating events in April from …show more content…
For example, I would say ‘touch your left knee with your right hand’, then she would have to repeat back what I said as well as completing the action stated. This is extremely difficult for stroke survivors as the part of the brain that deciphers left from right is partially damaged. The repetition of such tasks will help re-teach my great grandma so she will be able to eventually go back to her home, which she is longing for the day she doesn’t have to rely on anyone anymore. ...Sigmund Schlomo Freud BRIEF OVERVIEW Although Sigmund Freud was not the first person to formally study psychology, many consider him the most pivotal figure in the development of the field as we know it today. Freud changed the way society has come to think about and treat mental illness. Before Freud, mental illness was thought to result from deterioration or disease of the brain. Freud changed all of this by explicitly rejecting the purely organic or physical explanations of his predecessors. Instead he believed that unconscious motives and drives controlled most behavior. During a career that spanned 58 years, beginning with an earned medical degree in 1881 and continuing to his death in 1939, he developed and repeatedly revised his theory of psychoanalysis. Most of Freud’s theory was developed from contact he had with patients seen in his private practice in Vienna. This type of “clinical” work was a radical departure from the laboratory research that was practiced by most leading psychologists of the day. When Freud first presented his ideas in the 1890s, many of his contemporaries reacted with hostility. In fact, throughout his career, Freud faced enormous opposition to many of his ideas. Those especially controversial included notions about the role of the unconscious in behavior, childhood sexuality, and how the mind was governed (id, ego, and superego). But despite the opposition, Freud eventually attracted a group of followers that included well-known theorists 1856–1939...
