The reasons why I have selected this chapter is because of the increase in the migration population in the United States. Every year, “The United States Department of Education (2015a) reports that 51% of the students enrolled in public schools are White, 24% Hispanic, 16% Black, 5% Asian/Pacific Islander, 1% American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% two or more races” (Vaughn, S. Pg. 110). This means that at least 50% of the student population in public schools are reported to speaking more than 2 languages at home. Coming into a new country where you do not know the common language can be difficult to adapt for a child. Children need stability when they are growing up. It is very difficult for a child to keep on adapting to a different environment …show more content…
If you ask a student to read a text in a book and they know how to pronounce the words; they may have difficulty understanding what ther are reading. A way to help them understand the meaning of phrases or words is by putting up posters on the wall of the classroom with the picture of the word or phrase, then the word in both languages at the bottom. That way, the student can connect what they are reading to the meaning of the word. According to Vaughn, “Integrate the students’ native language and dialect, culture, and community into classroom activities to make input more relevant and comprehensible, to build trust and self-esteem, and to promote cultural diversity and cultural pluralism” (Vaughn, S. Pg. 133). This strategy may also help understand students in the classroom understand the ESL student culture and background even …show more content…
Using this strategy and more training can help me become a successful teacher in teaching the English language. Some of these extra training includes take a class in learning the first language of the students. There are multiple programs or tutors I can find here in the united States or in the foreign country that I can choose from. I might ask for advice from other teachers that have experience in teaching with ESL students. To get tips an additional information. Also, once I find out about the ESL student and their background information. I can do my own research into their culture and country and use some of the information to introduce to the other students in the

That is why when considering an education the quality of the education is almost as important as the education itself. So when private schools came into the picture the debate then began between public and private schools. There have been many discrepancies between the values of a public school as opposed to a private school. Advocates of private school argue that the education received in one of these facilities is more valuable and rewarding than any other educational opportunity (Greifner, 2007). The researcher sought to answer two research questions “Does differentiated instruction have an impact on student achievement?” and “Are there components of differentiated instruction that have a greater impact on student achievement than others?” The study followed a mixed method design and consisted of two parts. First, a quantitative analysis of test scores from the Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) and teacher and student survey results were analyzed as a means to outline broad relationships from the data. Results from the quantitative findings directed the researcher on how to frame the qualitative design. Second, a qualitative analysis of classroom observations and interviews with teachers was conducted. The qualitative portion of this study followed a social interactionism orientation adopted by social interactionism theorist (Blumer, 1969). This study adopted a survey research design. Three hundred and sixty-eight students from four secondary schools were randomly selected, 128 or 47.8% were males and 148 or 53% were females. Their ages range from 16-19years with the mean of 18.24years. Only 186 or 69% have had sexual intercourse and 94 of them had only one sex partner while 92 had more than one sex partner. Two research instruments were developed for this study-Attitude towards Pre marital Sex Scale (ATPSS) and Parent Involvement Questionnaire (PIQ). The findings revealed a significant effect of home type in prediction of adolescents’ involvement in premarital sex at r=.569, r2 =.347, f (1,218) = 56.47 and <.05 significant level. There was a significant difference significant difference in involvement in premarital sex between adolescents from single parent and intact homes at X2-observed=22.46, 1degree of freedom and p <0.05. It was concluded that parental involvement is paramount in adolescents’ premarital sexual behaviour.
