Distance learning can be rewarding and even a frustrating experience. With Distance learning, more and more adults are taking advantage of earning a college degree. With the technology in distance learning, it is very convenient for working adults to go back to school and earn a college degree. With a survival guide, it should make your experience in distance learning an awarding experience. Setting your won pace online and taking the courses when it is convenient in an environment that works for you. “Gone with the snippy instructors with endless, hard-to-read vugraphs and monotonous voices” (Stillman, 2005, 41 (3)).
Conducting a successful library and Internet search is a great tool for success. The Internet provides a great deal of information on various topics throughout the Cyber World. An internet user has to access to a wide range of services and protocols. Those series such as http and email allow users to retrieve and search material online without ever having to leave the house.
The Internet is not a library where items can be retrieved by a directory. No one knows how many files are located in the cyber world. The numbers are in the billions and still growing. There are many different ways to search for information. In the end looking, for topics that have different points of views can help you find the information you are looking for in an internet search. You have to be careful when using Internet sites because you have to ensure the site is creditable and the information is true.
To find academic resources online is just as important as how to look for the information on the web. Directories are newsworthy list of resources. Using a directory usually carries a smaller amount of resources. Searching the library can be to some extent different than searching in a search engine. In a library, you may be able to search for books once you are able to

...Student’s Survival Guide Brandie Bowland Axia College GEN105 July 12, 2009 So I am coming to the end of the 9 weeks of my first two classes. When I first decided to take on going back to school I was thinking to myself “What have I just gotten myself into?” Then came my first day and I was thinking “I hope that I am not in over my head!” Turns out that it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be. This class made it very easy to learn how to access the resources that are available to me as a student at Axia College. I am writing this survival guide as a resource for me to look back on in the future. Some of the things that were covered in this course that will be of use to my personal action plans are: using Axia’s educational resources, upholding academic honesty, setting and achieving goals, managing time wisely, reading comprehension and retention skills, and applying personality and learning styles. I am going to talk about each one of these topics in this “survival guide”. The first topic that I am going to talk about before I start talking about what I listed above is that because this is all done online it is considered distance learning. It is a lot different than going in to a class and sitting down in front of a teacher and listening to lectures. It does take a little more effort to succeed in distance but once you get the hang of it, it is all uphill from there. Plus, if you are going through a good college then all you could possibly need...

Student Survival Guide

...Student Survival Guide Gen 105 August 26, 2012 Student Survival Guide I recently have learned that I have more transferrable credits than I initially thought. This means that I will be moving on from the associates program to my Bachelor’s program sooner than I expected. My classes will be shorter, and the learning will be accelerated. In order to survive the next two years, I have created a Student Survival Guide that I will use to navigate successfully through my Bachelor’s program. The following tips and practices are listed in the order that I deem important to survive my Bachelor’s program. Before I can get started on my Bachelor’s, I need to re-establish my short-term and long-term goals. I have three short-term goals that can be completed roughly within the next two years. First, I will complete each course in my program to the best of my ability to achieve the highest grade possible. Second, when I have completed all my courses successfully I will receive my Bachelor’s Degree. My last short-term goal is to find an entry-level position in my field and begin gaining experience. I have three long-term goals. My first long-term goal is to go back to college while I am working and get my Master’s degree. This may be difficult, since I will be working and raising a family while going back to school but I believe it can be achievable if I stick to a strict schedule. My second long-term goal is to complete my internship. My third long-term goal is to pass...

Student Survival Guide

...Student Survival Guide Going to school online is one of the most exciting adventures you will ever go on. Knowing that the end result will provide better for yourself and your family will be worth all the work you put into your degree. You can’t get discouraged when you get stuck on an assignment; take a deep breath and keep pushing forward. There are a few things you are going to want to keep at the back of your mind in case you feel like giving up. You have been given some tools that you will utilize throughout your time in college and now you have a reference guide to help you. Using your general internet skills you know that when you research on the internet there are a few different things that you need to look for in terms of reliable sources for your papers. Looking for websites that end in “.EDU,” “.GOV,” and “.ORG,” is going to be the most useful for research as they typically will provide facts rather than an opinion of an author. Since blogs are typically the writer’s opinion, they may not be considered reliable sources unless they are backed up with facts of their own. While these websites can give you some ideas of where to look for reliable sources, weeding through all the opinions is time consuming and not usually worth all the work. When you are researching for a paper and looking for reliable sources, remember, CARS: Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonableness and Support. You also learned the importance of tone in online writing. Keeping a professional tone...

...Using Educational Resources All schools have tools set up to assist their students throughout their academic careers. I am taking every opportunity I have available to take advantage of these tools. The student workshops and labs for just about every subject that the school is offering was very beneficial to me. I have already participated in eight workshops and have found more to coincide with my courses. Through the university library I am finding things that have come in handy on every assignment. The Center for Writing Excellence has a section that helps me check for plagiarism on my papers and WritePoint checks the grammar of my papers before I turn them in. I have been provided with valuable material that I can download on to my computer for easy access. All of these resources are things that every student should become familiar with. Upholding Academic Honesty Upholding academic honesty basically means I will not cheat. This will be the key to my success as a student. All learning facilities need to know that their students are turning in their own work. Cheating to me, is a big waste of time, space, and money for all of the people involved (student, instructors, and the school). It does not make sense financially (especially) to take out all of the loans to attend school and learn nothing. When cheating, you learn nothing because you are not the one diving into the information and soaking up all of the knowledge. To uphold academic honesty, I will: ...

Few skills are more important than our ability to communicate our thoughts in writing, collaborate with our peers, and the sheer will to preserver through the most stressful of conditions. ...Once upon a time, I was sitting in my room on a dark and stormy night watching T.V. Then all of a sudden my power went out, so I went to look for a flash light, but I started hearing noises from the garage, so I went out there to see what it was. When I went out there, and my garage was open and no one was there. Then, I panicked because I didn’t know what to do. The garage was closed when I got home, so I freaked-out and I closed it then went into the house. That’s when I started hearing those noises. I was scared, so I went to find my dad so I could tell him what was going on because I had know idea about what happened. Then, we went to the garage to see what was going on, and when we went back to the garage we found out that some one was breaking into it. We called the cops but, by the time they got there, the guy was gone. I had this weird feeling that someone was watching me, so I told my dad. He said that he had the same feeling as well, so we went all around the house to find out where that feeling could be coming from. Well we went outside to find out what it could be, and when we got out there, someone was watching us from our neighbor’s house. We went back into the house to fix the power, then we started hearing noises again, so we went to go find out what it was. We found the noise. It was under the house, but we didn’t want to go under there. We called my uncle. He went under there he found it, and when he found it he came back and told us that he couldn’t see...

The Warm Bodies

...A funny new twist on a classic love story, WARM BODIES is a poignant tale about the power of human connection. After a zombie epidemic, R (a highly unusual zombie) encounters Julie (a human survivor), and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes increasingly more human - setting off an exciting, romantic, and often comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and maybe even the whole lifeless world As much as I enjoy "The Walking Dead" on AMC and movies such as "28 Days Later," one of my ongoing complaints about the explosion of the zombie genre is the general mopery and overall predictability of those ever-staggering creatures. They lurch. They snarl. They sniff the air for the scent of human flesh. They pounce and gnaw. They pound windows and doors, and express frustration when confronted with 10-foot-high cyclone fences. And then they get shot in the head and die. That's pretty much it. We almost never get inside the rotted mind of the zombie or see things from the zombie point of view. They're forever penned in as the Big Metaphor. One of the many exhilarating pleasures of "Warm Bodies" is the flipping of that script. This is a bloody fresh twist on the most popular horror genre of this century, with none-too-subtle echoes of a certain star-crossed romance that harks back to a certain bard who placed a certain...

Zombie Apocalypse

...Ten Reasons to Hope for the Zombie Apocalypse 1. You’ll never have to deal with your evil boss again. Unless, of course, she/he’s a zombie, in which case, you’ll get to bash her brains in (double win!). 2. When your kids ask you, “What’s for dinner?” you can sweetly reply, “go kill it yourself!” 3. You’ll finally get to test out your Tommy Knocker on some zombies, made by the one and only Zombie Fighter Jango! 4. All that knowledge you acquired from reading countless zombie book and weatching all the classic zombie movies will be put to good use (it’s not just entertainment!). 5. Your neighbors will finally stop complaining about your scraggly garden (I think a talent for killing plants is a sign that you’ll be able to kill zombies just as easily – it makes sense). 6. If the government shuts down, there will finally be a legitimate reason for it. 7. Maybe, just maybe, Daryl Dixon will come along, and you can impress him with your crossbow skills (amongst other things, *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*). 8. Twerking will be a thing of the past (one would hope). 9. Stupid diets like Atkins, South Beach, and juice cleanses will immediately go out of style. Twigs for everyone! 10. There will be a shortage of fossil fuels, and we won’t be polluting the environment at such a rapid rate (you’re welcome, Al Gore!). I hope I was able to brighten your day, now that you can add these to your list of reasons to anxiously await the zombie apocalypse. It’s all about silver...

...Unleash the (W)horde My game is a strategy tower defense game with zombies in it! You build different kinds of towers to defend yourself against the zombie whores that are trying to kill you. The theme of the game is basically just zombie survival after you cleared a map you move on to a new one. The setting is everywhere around the world around the time of 2015, from Paris to Bangkok just that it’s a lot darker and grimmer. The goal in the game is to kill all the zombies in the world and of course survive! The character in the game is Bengt Rolfsson he is a middle-aged man around 45 years old with grey hair and a grey beard, he has no family that he remembers since he woke up not remembering a thing except how to build basic towers and turrets, he doesn’t know why he keeps fighting since he has nothing to get from it….or does he? Why you keep playing in basically the human instinct of survival no man really wants to die! You build these turrets and towers by choosing them in the menu in the bottom left they cost a different amount of zombie teeth which you get when you kill a zombie it varies from zombie to zombie since they have a rotten body some teeth might have fallen out. Why you should play my game is because it’s a new thing! There are some game out there that a zombies vs turrets like the game “Plants vs Zombies” but I’m imagining a bit more realistic graphics and of course better gameplay and...

Modern Culture’s Fascination with the Undead

...generation. The essay will continue with a discussion on the most recent and ever so popular vampire films Twilight and “Let me in” and the TV series True Blood and why the latest X and Y generations seems to lack the fear people once had of these blood thirsty creatures. I will also discuss several of the most recent Zombie movies and how they’ve changed over the last two decades. Although zombie literature does not frequent the shelves of libraries and book stores, as do vampire literature. There is a zombie fiction novel written in 2006 called World War Z by Max Brooks, which became an immediate hit and a New York Times bestseller. Brooks had also authored the cult hit “The Zombie Survival Guide”, an exhaustively researched, zombie-themed parody of pop-fiction survival guide. I will also include sources indicating the US Government’s interest in zombie fiction and how the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has made use of this pop culture phenomenon to better inform the public on disaster preparation. In my conclusion, I will argue that the generation Xrs’ fascination with zombies, vampires and all things undead related is part of a search for immortality. In an age of increasing narcissism, identity crisis and denial of reality, generation X’s obsession with the undead seems to be a healthy distraction from the cold bleak truth-that when it’s over…it’s over. My research consists mostly of...

Zombie Sociology in Literature

...Zombie Outbreak in Literature Looking at literature, there are so many different genres and subgenres. When writing is involved, there are hundreds of possibilities and potentials to make an amazing piece that’ll be loved, hated, and talked about for years to come. There is a certain genre that has come into higher and higher power, that’s almost as well renowned as romance or adventure would be the horror genre. In horror there are so many amazing authors, capable of causing the reader to feel such intense emotions through just their writing. But unlike romance or adventure, these emotions are more so fear, anxiety, or paranoia. They write books or poems that leave people checking their closets, plugging in a nightlight, and hiding underneath their blankets to go to sleep at night. Some of the most amazing authors include H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Dean Koontz, and Peter Straub. All of them having different writing styles and stories, yet their pieces all yield the same results. Just like all the other genres, horror can also be broken down into different subgenres. This includes types like psychological horror, which leaves the reader questioning everyone’s sanity, even their own. There’s gothic, involving a mixture of psychological terror in romantic settings, including mysteries, ghosts, castles, decay, madness, hereditary curses, and death. Also on this list of subgenres is supernatural, the main cause of people seeing things out of the corner of their...
