I believe that college is a prime time in an individual’s life to have new experiences and learn more than academics. I feel that it is a time for one to really learn about their true self. Since growing and developing are major components of the college years, I am confident that studying abroad would offer infinite possibilities toward fulfilling those ends.

Ever since I can remember, I have always had a passion for traveling. I was born in Florida and moved to Wisconsin when I was seven years old. My family then moved to the small town of Luxemburg. I believe that the ideas and traditions present in a small town are all very similar which shelters individuals from diversity. After high school, I moved away from Luxemburg to attend Edgewood College in Madison. Students who live in Madison are fortunate to be around several ethnicities and cultures; however, I feel that one must travel to a foreign country to get the true experience of a culture.

My passion for studying abroad stems from my past experiences of traveling to foreign countries. The summer of my sophomore year in high school, I was granted the opportunity to travel to Europe. My international experience consisted of traveling to France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy in 21 days. Furthermore, I went on vacation to Cancun in Mexico my senior year in high school and I have also been to Canada a handful of times. I believe that each of these adventures has helped shape my perspectives of life; however, I feel that a longer experience in a different country will allow me to flourish as an individual.

Studying abroad is the right decision for me. I am at the stage in my life where I want to broaden my horizons and experience something new. I believe that the countries that I have selected would give me the opportunity to do just that. I have chosen the United Kingdom, Germany, or New Zealand because they all have interesting traditions and great programs in business. I point out their programs in business because I am a business major. I believe that experiencing firsthand how foreign countries conduct business will give me the opportunity to gain significant knowledge and become successful in the business world.

While studying abroad, I plan to be more than just a foreign student from America. I hope to be accepted in to the country’s society and participate in the everyday activities of their culture. In addition, I plan to fulfill various academic goals. I mentioned earlier that learning how foreign countries conduct business will improve my business skills. However, I also want to take a foundation course at their university so I will have more knowledge of my host country.

College is the perfect time to have new discoveries and adventures. My time at Edgewood College has so far been filled with adventures and personal discoveries and I am confident that studying abroad will only enhance that. I look forward with great anticipation and enthusiasm to the adventures that await me when I study abroad.

Never have I thought my life turned around sharply in a matter of months. After I knew I was going to study abroad, I had a couple of sleepless nights. My last day in Hong Kong has come way faster than I expected. After arriving at the airport, it was a speechless night that everyone in my family seemed to have something deep down in their hearts. Crossing the walkway to the Departure, I was like stepping into a next level of my life which is more mature, independent and responsible. Finally, we were at the Departure, and my mother has already burst into tears. For instance, I was so desperate and depressed in that mournful atmosphere. It was unexpected to see my father’s eyes turning puffy and red. For the past eighteen years, I have never seen my father cry once. But this time, I knew he could not hide his emotions from his face.
