CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Learning can be achieved in many ways. There are lots of factors that affect learning. Some of these can boast learning and some can hinders learning. Many educational psychologist mentioned different factors that affects learning. It can be intrinsic, extrinsic or environmental. Some says learning can be acquired through experience (Ivan Pavlov). Some believes that by giving reinforcement (positive or negative), a student will eagerly learn ( B.F Skinner). But no single factor can definitely pointed out as predicting learning. It has been interplay with so many factors like gender, economic status, age, social status, IQ, study habits, etc. But among all of these factors, one with big impact to their learning is the study habits and skills of an individual. Such study habits and skills can be related to; a. habits that provides good working condition, b. essential study habits, reading habits and skills and c. habits related to note taking outlining and library use. The Social Cognitive Theory focuses on learning affected by behavior. People learn by observing others, with the environment, behavior, and cognition all as the chief factors in influencing development in a reciprocal triadic relationship. For example, each behavior witnessed can change a person's way of thinking (cognition). Similarly, the environment one is raised in may influence later behaviors, just as a father's mindset (also cognition) determines the environment in which his children are raised.Since habit is a behavior, and skills can be acquired and developed in the environment, we can say that the study habits and skills really affect the learning of the students. In conformity with ( Mcknight 2006 ) he explained that habits are formed thorugh repetition. Once formed, habits are difficult to break. And it is formed when we are young and are likely to stay with us in…...

Study Skills

...------------------------------------------------- Study skills From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Study skills or study strategies are approaches applied to learning. They are generally critical to success in school,[1] considered essential for acquiring good grades, and useful for learning throughout one's life. There are an array of study skills, which may tackle the process of organizing and taking in new information, retaining information, or dealing with assessments. They include mnemonics, which aid the retention of lists of information, effective reading and concentration techniques,[2] as well as efficient notetaking.[3] While often left up to the student and their support network, study skills are increasingly taught in High School and at the University level. A number of books and websites are available, from works on specific techniques such as Tony Buzan's books on mind-mapping, to general guides to successful study such as those by Stella Cottrell. More broadly, any skill which boosts a person's ability to study and pass exams can be termed a study skill, and this could include time management and motivational techniques. Study Skills are discrete techniques that can be learned, usually in a short time, and applied to all or most fields of study. They must therefore be distinguished from strategies that are specific to a particular field of study e.g. music or technology, and from abilities inherent in the student, such as aspects of intelligence......

...Literature and Studies Introduction his chapter included relevant sources of information from foreign literature, local literature, foreign studies and local studies which tackle the existing activities that promote good study habits. Local Literature According to Muega (2003), students need to acquire reasoning skills that would enable them to think critically and to make the right decisions claims on issues. Reasoning entails presentation of arguments. It is when one makes conclusions from what he reads. It is from reading and reasoning one gets to extend his knowledge crtically. To expand Muega’s ideas, according to Acido (2008), data have revealed that the major difference between students with below average, average, and above average reasoning skills centers on their study habits—whether they have good or bad study habits, and their attitude towards learning a particular skill—whether they are interested or not, are responsible for their learning or not, and take responsibility over what they do or not. Acido proves Zolten & Long’s idea that the awareness on the responsibilities of a college student is essential to increase studying skills. Professors in the developing countries said that the undergraduate students should be fully equip with high level of analytical skills, the capacity for critical reasoning, self-reflection and conceptual grasp and ability to learn autonomously and exercise flexibility of mind (Simmons2003). Study habits are said to......
