THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Introduction
Study habits and learning attitudes are very important in part of the learning process. It influences the academic performance of students, so parents and teachers must help in improving the study habits of students. Attitude and study habits are obviously crucial as well. It is important for all students to protect investments of time and money and to achieve educational goals. The main priorities are class attendance, time management, and great studying habits are necessary workings for an academic success.
Poor study habits and influence of bad attitudes are a major cause of current academic problems. As the year level of students in school becomes higher, their study habits differ from time to time. Below is the data gathered from Hotel and Restaurant Management students of St. Michael’s College about their academic performance last semester. The total passing percentage is 85% which consists of First year students (88%), Second year students (75%) and Third year students (92%) from selected major subjects.
A literature review by Nagaraju (2004) pointed out that, for good academic success, good study habits and attitudes are important. Hence, it is imperative and desirable that a probe into the pattern of study habits and attitudes of students be made.
The researchers’ objective of this study is to know the importance of study habits and learning attitude, to give the students the information and tools to develop good strategies towards learning, to solve poor study habits and to prevent influence of bad attitudes.
This research study shall be conducted on the second semester of academic year 2015-2016.

Theoretical Framework

...Methods A descriptive correlational research design was used for this study to examine the relationship of students’ study habits and attitudes to their performance in the licensure examinations. The respondents were graduates in school year 2009-2010 from the different programs of the University which require licensure examination. A total of 239 students comprised of 127 males and 112 females participated in the study. Table 1 shows the distribution of the respondents. Table 1: Distribution of the respondents The study habits and attitudes of the respondents were assessed by administering the “Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes” (SSHA) developed by Brown and Holtzman (1969) during their final year in the University. The SSHA consists of 100 items divided equally into four (4) subscales named as ‘work methods (WM)’, ‘delay avoidance (DA)’, ‘teacher approval (TA)’ and ‘educational acceptance (EA)’. The subscales are used to formulate two subtotals; summation of scores obtained from WM and DA forms a score for ‘Study Habits (SH)’ and the total score obtained from the summation of TA and EA yield a ‘study attitudes (SA)’ score. The Study Habits measure student's time management ability and work methods whereas Study Attitudes measure student’s opinions about teacher’s classroom management and behavior and his/her acceptance of education. ...Learning Habits One of the hardest things to do in life is to analyze or criticize yourself. A person can sit there and be able to criticize other people and pick out all the flaws, but when asked to analyze ones self, a person may find it difficult to find their own flaws. However, there are people out there that get paid to design test to help people see their flaws and help them analyze themselves. Though these test may not be one hundred percent perfect, they will give a person a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. After taking the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI), the Inventory of Classroom Style and Skills (INCLASS), and the Center for Innovative Teaching Experiences (CITE), I was able to see my strengths and weaknesses in my study habits. Like I have stated before, these test are not one hundred percent perfect or correct. They are not designed to be that way; however, they are designed to give a person a better understanding of their study habits. After taking all the tests, I can say that I do not completely agree with the results that came out. But, before I pass judgment, lets take two thing into consideration: first off, I may not have been honest with myself in answering the questions, second, the test are scored on a percentile scale based on a collection of scores accumulated from people who have taken the tests before.
