Are study skills the sole foundation of a sound education?

It is possible that some people believe that a solid understanding of how to use study skills is enough to be able to gain a thorough grounding or training in a particular subject. Certainly, the development of study skills such are necessary and relevant to academic learning.

This is not the only route to achieve the development of skills. For example, it is necessary to repeat new learning and the student must immerse themself in the process of gaining new knowledge and understanding. Along the way, adding skills which then become study skills and begin to go hand in hand with the learning experience.

In the third edition of Cottrell’s The Study Skills Handbook (Cottrell, 2008), she refers to various approaches to learning. Here she says that learning should be an adventure and that the student should participate in the learning process, and that they must trust in their own intelligence. In other words, she if saying that a good student should enjoy the experience of learning and not just have their mind set on the finish line.

There is more than one way to learn new skills without having a study manual. Repetition and practice, and not seeing the practice as a chore is important. Making mistakes along the way becomes part of the building of skills by knowing the right roads to take. This is just one example of not needing a study skills manual when learning new things.

Study skills are what we bring to the table when we want to learn. With repetition and reflection, as mentioned in various study manuals we are slowly but surely educating ourselves. As Northedge says, ‘to be a successful student you must use your intelligence’ (Northedge, 2005).
