Reference | Synopsis | Relevance | 1. I-Min Lee1, 2. Ralph S. Paffenbarger Jr., 3. Chung-cheng Hsieh (1991) , Physical Activity and Risk of Developing Colorectal Cancer Among College Alumni, http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/content/83/18/1324.short | This article shows us that people who are inactive have a higher risk of Colorectal Cancer then people who are active. This study was taken from 17148 Harvard alumni. Every part of the participant’s physical activity was looked at including walking, going up and down stairs and sports play. Highly active participants had less of a chance of developing Colorectal Cancer then those who were moderately active. However, increased physical activity had no effect on protecting rectal cancer. | This is relevant because it shows us that with less physical activity there is a greater chance illness will occur in the longterm. | 1. Penny Gordon-Larsen, PhD, 2. Robert G. McMurray, PhD,Barry M. Popkin, PhD (1999), Determinants of Adolescent Physical Activity and Inactivity Patterns, http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/105/6/e83.short | This article shows us that different social types of school students cause the levels of physical activity to decrease depending on race and social class. The study was taken from the 1996 National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health on 17766 US adolescents enrolled in Us middle and high schools. The students took a questionnaire describing the hours of the week they were inactive and active. This showed us that black and Hispanic students had lower physical activity levels and higher inactivity. This also decreased with age. | This is relevant because it shows us that physical activity levels decrease from high school which would proceed into third level education. | Janet Buckworth PhD & Claudio Nigg PhD (2010), Physical Activity, Exercise, and Sedentary Behavior inCollege Students , http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3200/JACH.53.1.28-34 | This article shows us physical activity and sedentary behaviors in 493 college students. They completed a questionnaire at the start of there course. The results showed that men had higher physical activity levels than women but the men had increased sedentary behavior as they spent more watching television and on the computer. Older students were shown to be on the computer longer than younger students whereas younger students were more physically active. Sedentary behavior is only seen with men on the computer and women watching television. | This is relevant because it shows us that physical activity levels in college decrease because of gender. This shows us that women are less active in third level then men. | Butler, Scott M.;Black, David R. Blue, Carolyn L. Gretebeck, Randall J.(2004), Change in Diet, Physical Activity, and Body Weight in Female College Freshman, http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/png/ajhb/2004/00000028/00000001/art00003 | This article shows us that physical activity decreases in women when they move from school to third level education. The study was taken with 54 freshmen women when they started and 5 months later. Womens calorie intake dropped during the study but there body weight increased this is due to a decrease in physical activity. The study showed that increasing physical activity and improving diet eating such foods as vegetables, fruits, breads, meats and pasta will help with body weight. Also decreasing alcohol consumption will improve there weight considerably. | This is relevant because it shows that women in third level education have increased there body weight because of decreased physical activity. | | | |

Ramachandran Director, SNR Institute of Management Sciences, SNR Sons College, Coimbatore, India Mr. M. Sakthivadivel Anna University of Technology Coimbatore, India Abstract An analysis was carried out to empirically evaluate the determinants of profitability in the public and private sector commercial banks in India. A combination of statistical tools such as the correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis and factor analysis were used to estimate the contribution of select bank specific variables towards profitability which was measured by using Return on Assets (RoA). The study revealed that the cost of borrowing and NPA has a significant negative correlation with profitability for public sector banks. Return on investments, return on advances and operating profit had a significant positive correlation with profitability for both public and private sector banks. The multiple regression analysis highlighted that the return on investments and return on advances has a significant influence on the profitability of private sector banks. The factor analysis has also shown that the NPA has a strong negative influence on the profitability for both public and private sector banks. ...It is possible for students to achieve success in the examination if the correct strategies and study skills are used. Studying effectively does not depend so much on how long one spends with book and notes but how effectively one has been studying. One of the most important recipes for success in examination is to study regularly and consistently. After all ‘Rome was not built in a day’. It is necessary, therefore to draw up a timetable with time set aside for recreation, exercise or television. Equally important is the discipline to stick to the period timetable. Without a study plan or timetable, some subject me be inadequate focus and attention. Another factor that is crucial for examination success is the need to do homework and assignments. Homework and assignments reinforce learning and helps students to identify what they do not know so that remedial work can be done immediately. In addition, homework helps students to practice and reinforce classroom learning. Preparing mind maps is another study skills that can be used to make learning more effective and more meaningful. For subject with a lot of content matter such as History and Biology, mind maps are essential for various reasons. For one, mind maps helps students to focus on the important elements as well as to see relationship between the element more clearly. Particular attention is paid to the importance of biases that are potentially present because the number of hours that are worked is endogenously chosen by the individual. A “naive” OLS regression, which indicates that a positive and statistically significant relationship exists between hours-worked and grade performance, highlights the potential importance of endogeneity bias in this context. Although a fixed effects estimator suggests that working an additional hour has an effect on grades which is quantitatively very close to zero, we suggest that there are likely to exist causes of endogeneity which are not addressed by the fixed effects estimator. Indeed, an instrumental variables approach, which takes advantage of unique institutional details of the work-study program at this school, indicates that working an additional hour has a negative and quantitatively large effect on grade performance at this school....

...http://www.aksnewarkde.com/StudyHabits.html GOOD STUDY HABITS... ...are the key to keeping up your grades Remember: “If you improve your study habits, improving your grades will be easier…” 1. Make a list. It all starts with ‘planning’. Make a list of all the things you have to do. Break it down into smaller chunks. Then check off your accomplishments as you go. 2. Do the hard stuff first…then the easy. Put your energy into the harder assignments…when you have less energy or your brain is tired, you can then tackle the easier tasks. 3. Proper study space. Make a place to study. When you use the same place to study, day after day, your body becomes trained. You will focus your concentration more quickly there. 4. Snack. Don’t try to study on an empty stomach. If you’re hungry, you’ll be distracted. So grab an apple or some carrot sticks. Just avoid dairy products or turkey, which tend to be natural sedatives (make you sleepy). 5. No distractions. Turn off the stereo, TV or radio. Silence is the best environment to study in. 6. Study buddy. Don’t overlook the value of a study partner. Quiz each other, compare notes and practice testing. You can also help one another from becoming bored. But avoid distracting each other from what you are there to do. 7. Write it down. Experts agree that the more senses you use to absorb information, the better you’ll remember it....

...But still there are young people who are determined and motivated to continue their studies despite of their undesirable situation. They are trying hard in their studies for them to avail scholarships available in different colleges and universities programmed for deserving students but others unluckily did not avail due to limited slots given. How these students continue with their quest living with quality of life? Are there any options available for them? The most common phrase we heard from common people is: we can continue with our studies later but this time we have to work first, let’s be practical. The focus of today’s students is to enroll for one or two years then apply for work because the minimum requirements is college level but soon they will realize how important is education and most probably the realization came in late of their lives, that’s the real thing. People spend too much in shorter plans and they did not focus on the longer one. Parents also lacks of motivation for them to encourage their students to continue. Why?... because they didn’t have it during their time. So, this time what can we do to resolve this kind of situation? What if there are lots of students who are determined to pursue their dreams. Can they sustain their studies until they have it? It has been observed here in Consolacion Community College since its opening on 2010 that there are lots of students who are poor but deserving students who are willing to...

...He instigates that studies serve us by giving us pleasure, by assisting us with self improvement and enhancing our capability in profession. He considers the evils of excess studying as over reading leads to laziness, vanity and precocity. Education extracts the best in us and experience further perfects it because experience teaches us the prudence to consider only the useful information and eliminate unnecessary details. After discussing the function of education, Bacon moves on to imbibe the right attitude towards acquisition of knowledge. Cunning people dislike reading as knowledge might teach them those lessons that might be inimical or contradictory to their self-interests and they are too rigid to change themselves. Destitute people admire education as possessing it is a goal for them. However, the right approach towards studies is to adopt and comply with it which can be possible only after careful observation and experience. Bacon advises to acquire knowledge neither to argue or attack nor to deliberately display it as jewellery, but to train the mind to be logical and sensible. He divides the books into three categories: those to be read in parts (like dictionary, law books), those to be read entirely out of necessity and those to be read with care, diligence and sincerity (holy books). Certain books are to be read out of necessity in order to support an argument or to solve a problem, but these books do not serve humanity at large....

...Forget about electronic products With the continuous development of science and technology, human life seems to be inseparable from the electronic products. Nowadays, almost everyone use electronic products in their life and work. More and more people become addicted to electronic products. Especially younger people like us, we almost use our phone and computer everyday. Although electronic products brought convenience to our life, but it’s negative impact has become more and more serious, our life and work have completely affected by it, we could not allow it to continue. As I found there are many bad but very common phenomenon caused by electronic products around most of us. At first, Electronic products have made the real communication between people become less and less. We can often see such a scene: a whole family or a group of friends having dinner together on one table, but everyone is playing with their smartphone, computer, or I-pad, people have not much communication with each other. Even many people stay together or living together, but they chat with each other through text. I also see a lot of this situation in many of my classes. For example, every time I come in to a classroom, there usually have two-thirds of people plays their phone and computers to spend the time before class begin, only few of people talk with neighbors. Why do we sit together without any communication? It is a really serious problem. The more we focus on electronic products and the more...

...Disciplined study habits are essential to succeed in school. Someone who studies for every test at 10 PM the night before and types up long papers the day before they are due will probably not find his grades to be too high in college. You may be attending a college with a world-class biology program, but you probably won’t be passing a biology test if you only study from midnight to 3 AM and take the test at 8 AM. Learn to study in small increments long before tests occur and work on papers early in advance. At the beginning of the semester, write all your test and project dates into a planner (or in your iPhone if you’re cool like that). That you way you won’t be caught realizing you have two tests the next day and a 6-page paper due the day after. Talk with students who succeed in their grades and ask what strategies they use. Also, evaluate the tools that help you best for studying. Flashcards? Mnemonic devices? Crazy songs with terms in them? Take advantage of tutoring services and general academic help a college might offer. Also, many teachers are willing to help their students who come to their offices or send them emails. Don’t be afraid to ask for...
