“From now on you are no longer a person, just a number. All your rights have been left outside the gate- you are left with only one and that you are free to do - leave through that chimney” (Stutthof Concentration Camp 3). Only about 100 prisoners from the Stutthof camp were still alive when the Soviet forces came. It was a tragic experience for Jews and people who supported them. It is important for all to know what the Germans did to the helpless Jews.
The Stutthof camp was the first Nazi created camp outside of Germany and was surrounded by water (the Baltic Sea, the Vistula river, and the Nogat river) so that its prisoners were trapped and helpless. Another reason this was a convenient place for the Germans was that it had great connections to the Polish countries of Danzig and Nowy Dwor. The camp was almost at sea level and was very dank and wet most of the year, a struggle for both Jews and Germans. Even so, in 1942, the Germans built the “New Camp”. Adding to the 8 barracks of the old camp, the new camp consisted of 30 new barracks and electrified barbed wire fences. The Germans also built two brick stoves with chimneys that were 18 …show more content…
When the Germans heard that the Soviet armies were coming, the Germans took most of the Stutthof prisoners to the Baltic Sea. By this time, the camp was surrounded by Soviet forces. The prisoners who were taken to the sea, were forced into the water and many were gunned down. By the end, only 4,000 were sent by small boat, most to Neuengamme (a concentration camp) and the rest to camps along the Baltic Sea. Almost half of the 4,000 who attempted the treacherous journey drowned and their bodies were left behind. When the Soviet forces finally got to the camp, there were only about 100 still there because they had hidden from Nazi forces. Out of the 100,000 people who passed through Stutthof, only about 100 survived for the liberation of the

Indian Camp

...It seems like, that in “Indian Camp” by Hemingway, Nick and his father are doing a father and son trip. Nick’s father who is a doctor, seems plays a big role in this story. But actually Nick is kind of the main character. Uncle Gorge have asked the doctor to come to the Indian camp, where an Indian woman is very sick, she’s going to have a baby. On their way to the Indian Camp, nick is lying in the arms of his father, at the end of the boat. He is very near to his father, and seems to search love of this dad like a little boy. In that case I have to say that Nick is probably about 8-10 years old in this story. At the Indian camp, Nick’s father is trying to explain him what is going on in the little shanty. Nick act’s like he does understand that the woman is going to have a baby, and that it’s normal that she screams. But he clearly wants his father to make the woman stop screaming because he feels sorry for her. While the whole operation nick is standing in the Shanty watching most of the time his father doing his work. I think Nick is kind of scared what is going to happened. The fact that he looked away shows that he doesn’t liked what was going on, he felt bad by seeing another person suffer, but at the same time I think he maybe was a little proud too that his father can save this woman out of pain. After the operation things changed, we now know that uncle Gorge is most likely the father of the baby, and that the husband of the woman killed himself. Before the Doctor could...

Asylum Seekers

...People can be transformed by the experience of discovery, whether it’s physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual or creative. This is reflected in Ivan O’Mahoney’s documentary Go Back to Where You Came From where six Australians are forced to confront the emotional and provocative issue of asylum seekers. Comparatively in Ernest Hemmingway’s short story Indian Camp we follow the adventure of a young boy named Nick who accompanies his father to a Native American camp to assist him in the delivery of a child, while there he experiences both life and death and through this discovery develops a new perception about the damaging impact of fear on the human spirit. In “Go Back to Where You Came From”, Raye, Racquel and Roderick visit the Masudi...

Personal Narrative Essay On Camp Tevya

...“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” – Joe from “The Princess Diaries” (and Eleanor Roosevelt) I have been spending seven weeks at Camp Tevya each summer since the summer before eighth grade. My mom had gotten a job as the Head of Arts and Crafts, and she brought my sisters and me with her to camp. I have never been one of those people who are always loud and bouncing around with all seventy of their friends, so it was a bit of culture shock going to camp for the first time. Everybody was very outgoing and always surrounded by their friends. I had a very hard time fitting in and adapting to the overly extroverted environment. This was doubly hard for me as a camper because I was forced to spend my entire day with the same 21 girls, all of whom had already been friends for at least three years....

...Finally the blazing sun dusk over Russia peacefully and the forest was attack with thick gloomy fog. The endless thunder, screaming, shouting and bang fade away in to the distant. My body is exhausting with sheer terror, heart igniting with fire and mind block into the traumatising experience. The smell of thousands of dead burned bodies, slaughtered and starved to death seized onto my uniform. The rain began to spit down rough like missile bombs and the silence was far from safe. Each footsteps we take the bloody puddle splash softly over odd shoe's scattering across the floor, rotting flesh piled on top of one another. We discover a camp haunted with dead people. Although their were survivors, they were soulless behind the anxious eyes. They appear to be nothing more than cold, coloured marbles. Tormented by the camp where they experienced forced labour, torture and witnessed brutal murders. The prison contained a collection off damped, unstable wood and guard with a sky tower razor wired barrier. The zone was immortal. It was strained out of no where, far from towns and the oblivious society. The prisoners dragged their feet and crawled towards us begging for help like ghastly zombies. Their soul, muscle and blood was sucked out, leaving them with dehydrated visible body frame. The cry was mixed with joy and relief. The Russian soldiers had flee but it was strange to have left the prisoners alive unless they want them to brutally die slowly. The hostage breathed heavily hungry...

Bubbles

...Bubbles I don’t remember where the camp name Bubbles came from. I do know that my daughter, Tarah, couldn’t have picked a better name for herself. Camp names are a tradition with the “teens” at Girl Scout camp. “Teens” are girls that are in at least the “6th” grade and are essentially in charge of camp. Bubbles fits Tarah’s personality perfectly, she’s vivacious and cheerful- but not in an obnoxious Richard Simmons type of way. She’s always tends to have an optimistic outlook on life. Although her physical characteristics were the complete opposite when she was a baby, chubby and bald, her attitude was the same, content and always smiling. I even brought her to the doctor afraid something was wrong with her because she cried so little. She started talking around the time she was two and hasn’t stopped since. We lovingly tease her because she even talks in her sleep. As a toddler there were never any tantrums. There was typical toddler mischief, but she was always smiling and giggling while causing havoc. Around the time she was five we had problems with telemarketers calling constantly. I would hand her the phone and supervise what was being said. She would ask if they had pets or kids, about the weather, and other random things until they eventually hung up. After a while the calls stopped. Once she was in school most elementary progress and report cards said something along the lines of “Tarah is a pleasure to have in class, but please work on the excessive talking...

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Quiz

...The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Quiz Please write using complete sentence and use your own words for each answer. Be sure to check grammar and spelling. You may write on the quiz sheet, but it is recommended you use own paper for writing answers. 1. Why are Bruno (Asa Butterfield) and Shmuel (Jack) drawn to each other, despite their opposing circumstances? Bruno and Shmuel are drawn to each other simply because they are two kids of similar age that don’t have any friends where they reside. Despite their “political” differences, they were able to relate to one another by playing games and just getting a sense of each other’s daily lives and activities 2. Gretel (Amber Beattie) believes Father (David Thewlis) and his peers in their viewpoints on the persecution of Jews. Through Bruno is even younger than her, why does he question these viewpoints while Gretel does not? Gretel seems to believe in his Father’s viewpoints because she has the mindset of a realist. She backs up her views, along with the viewpoints of her father’s peers with the propaganda that she reads along with her professor’s teachings. Bruno, on the other hand, is more ignorant and naïve, which is very understandable for someone his age. His attitude towards the persecution of Jews is an unbiased one, and that the treatment that they receive is unjust and cruel. He doesn’t really grasp the magnitude of political differences that the Jews and Nazi’s have. 3. Contrast Father with Lieutenant Kotler...

Queer Cinema and Johnny Guitar

...Queer Cinema Essay One Camp and Drag The stylistic choices camp and drag have been around since the 1920’s. Camp is anything that falls under a category of being kitsch, cheesy, melodramatic, or low brow. It also suggests effeminacy. Drag is simply dressing as a gender opposite the gender one identifies with. Therefore, camp and drag are directly related. These elements add to the overall effect of a film and can either hurt or hinder the success of a film. There are strong elements of both in Johnny Guitar. Johnny guitar is a 1954, Western film that challenges the roles of women in the wild west. The film had a mediocre reception even though it stars film legend Joan Crawford. The story focuses on Crawford’s character Vienna who has builds a saloon out side of town and wants to build her own town once the railroad is built. However, the town’s people, led by Emma Small want her gone. So, Vienna hires Johnny Guitar for protection. This inciting incident is where the story begins. Throughout the trials and tribulations the characters face, camp and drag fuel the plot and the interactions between the characters. Elements of camp and drag are evident through the environment, and scenery and, and Vienna’s wardrobe. Johnny Guitar is essentially a western, however the scenery slightly disagrees. There are two instances where the scenery does not adhere to the rules of a western film. The first is Vienna’s saloon and the second is the Dancing Kid and his gang’s hideaway....

A Day in the Life of a Child Soldier

...I wake up to the sound of war. It’s normal now, I’ve been here for a while. My back aches and I have mosquito bites all over my body. I’m forced to sleep on the concrete floor in my camp every night. Last night, I dreamt that I was home with my family, playing with my friends at school and eating a meal at my home. I haven’t had a real meal for so long. I know that I won’t get breakfast this morning, I haven’t eaten breakfast for a month now, since they abducted me. I get a few snacks here and there, just to keep me alive, but it’s never anything good. My commander walks in and yells at us to line up. Everyone stands up and gets into a line, except for a young soldier who refuses to stand up. We all watch as he gets dragged outside to be tortured. Some of us try hard to hold back our tears, but the children who have been here longer, have forgotten how to feel sadness. Our commander leads us outside, and we try to keep our eyes off of the screaming boy. It’s time to get our drugs. One by one, we get a slit cut in our arm, and the drug ‘brown brown’ rubbed into our new wound. It’s my turn. I watch as the knife slides across my arm. It hurts a little, but not as much as it did the first time. My commander rubs the cocaine and gunpowder mixture into my blood stream, and I instantly feel better. I’m addicted. I need to kill. We march in a straight line with our AK47’s in our hands. It’s a long walk, and my legs start to ache and burn. None of us have shoes to wear, so we’ve gotten...
