Becoming a Successful Student

Succeeding in school can be easy for some, but for those who struggle and don’t believe in themselves it can be a long road to understand how to become successful in school and even life. There are plenty of methods people use to become a better student, let’s focus on reading, writing and time management. By hitting these points we will break down how a student turns his academic life around and succeed in the classroom.
Listening to your professor for four hours and taking down notes can be effective, but have you ever heard that reading everyday can help you expand vocabulary, comprehend new situations and become smarter? Finding an hour of your schedule to sit in a quiet place and read a book a month can help you advance your thought process. Read the chapter summary, and don’t just jump in to the book with out an understanding of it. As you begin reading, take notes and understand what the author is interpreting, it is a great technique to acquire. According to Emory University, located in Georgia, reading a novel improves brain function, and flared up parts of the brain where the receptivity of language is located. “the purpose of reading is to connect the ideas on the page to what you already know.” (Martin, pg. 7).
Note taking is one of the most important things you can do in a class, unless you record the lecture of a professor. Notes lets you comeback to a certain point and re read what was being said. Writing down things helps you remember more effectively than typing on your computer. Even if you’re only recording your thoughts, it can be a helpful exercise to be done and improve on your memory and brain activity. When an exam comes around, you are able to bring up those topics written in your pad, and reading them will help you comprehend harder topics. “lack of concentration is like lack of fuel. Without concentration, the mind has little power” (Martin, 9).
Warren Buffet once said, “You’ve gotta keep control of your time, and you can’t unless you say no. You can’t let people set your agenda in life” Commit to your goal! If you want to finish school or start a new job somewhere, then you should do it. Creating daily checklist will help you keep track of your performance. Keeping track of your schedule will give you an understanding of propriety and what needs to be done first before having leisure time for yourself. Procrastination can eat you alive when it comes to getting assessments and work done, so create an effective schedule that will keep you in line. “No student is likely to be successful within the sphere of academia unless there is a concerted attempt to address study on a continual basis. Study may not always be full of joy and excitement but the end result will bring much satisfaction” (Mclroy, pg. 51)
Take these methods in consideration and you will become a successful student. I will not promise you that it will happen in a day, a week, or a month, because it takes years for someone to become organized and self motivated to reaching these goals. If you are someone who has the mindset of achieving then you will reach that goal that you set for yourself.

Tips for Successful Students.

...Lake and von Baeyer's article, “Tips for Successful Students,” and Lecture One “Essentials of Baccalaureate Education,” I believe that I have a combination of different characteristics for being a successful student. My strongest characteristic is of a winning attitude. I believe that attitude is a strong characteristic because it involves self-determination and self-discipline as described in the article of "Tips for Successful Students", which is required in order to succeed when you set a goal. I believe that this characteristic will help me become a successful student in the RN to BSN program. I feel very strong about attitude being everything. Life is full of bunches of surprises and for me, how I show up is what makes all the difference in the world; and an attitude of self-discipline and determination.   Also, I want to take note on the article of "Tips for Successful Students". On the second part of the article there is a statement as follows "Successful students can be distinguished from the average student by their attitudes and behavior. Below are some profiles that typically distinguish between an "A" student and a "C" student. Where do you fit in this scheme? I think this is a great question to pose. I believe that us humans are multifaceted, multi layered and to me I find it very difficult to place myself in a category of between a "A"student and a" C" student. I find that I have many of the principles of an "A" student and yet there are some situations that can...

Successful Online Student

...Characteristics of Successful Online Students Are you motivated, responsible, and goal oriented? If you said yes, then going to school online might be for you! But before you apply to an online program, there are a few things to consider. In order to be a successful online college student, you must either be or seek to become motivated, responsible, and goal oriented, for without these characteristics, you will have great difficulty accomplishing your assignments. In the article I selected, “Students’ characteristics, self-regulated learning, technology self-efficacy, and course outcomes in online learning” (Wang, C., Shannon, D., & Ross, M. 2013), several topics were covered. Some of the topics included in the article are; self-regulated learning, relationships between technology self-efficacy and course outcomes, students’ characteristics, motivation, and course outcomes. However, the main focus of this essay is what the article has to say about the different characteristics that make online students successful. Out of everything I have learned from the article I chose, the thing that stands out the most is that it doesn’t take a certain personality to succeed in the world of online learning. It takes characteristics that I believe, can be learned and practiced. Something that did surprise me though was that in some cases, gender was a deciding factor in self-efficacy as it applied to technology and academics. “Conversely, Brown et al. (2003) found that males reported...

Children must learn personal responsibility, time management skills, and family values when they are young. If children develop a strong responsibility foundation they will develop into a successful college student. Personal responsibility is something that is taught to you throughout your childhood and developed throughout your adult life. A child is taught family values daily from the time they begin to walk. Parents begin to pass on their own values system and this is what a person’s responsibility foundation is built on. In order for a student to be successful in their college career they must already have been taught personal responsibility throughout their childhood. Children should be given household chores at a very young age, like picking up their toys, making their beds, and even feeding the family pet, at this age they are exposed to the family values at its core. Children begin to realize what responsibility is through these chores. Experts believe that any type of household responsibilities, are important for kids (Dunnewind, 2004). Acceptable Characteristics of a Successful Student

...Characteristics of a Successful Student A good student is a successful student. Many students new to college do not know what it takes to be successful in the college environment. They understand good and bad grades in a general way, and they sense that they should attend classes, but that is where their knowledge begins and ends. Most instructors know and can tell you what a good student is - and is not. A good student is not necessarily the most intelligent individual in the class. The following is a list of some acceptable characteristics of good students. This list is a description of what a hard-working student does and what a teacher likes to see. By learning these characteristics, you may better understand the day-to-day and class-to-class behavior of successful students. The idea is to provide you with guidelines you can follow which will help you get down to the business of becoming a serious, successful student. Firstly, Successful students attend classes regularly. They are on time. They listen and train themselves to pay attention. If they miss a session, they feel obligated to let the instructor know why before class begins, if possible, and their excuses are legitimate and reasonable. They make sure they get all missed assignments (by contacting the instructor or another student), and understand specifically what was covered in class. Successful students take responsibility for themselves and their actions. Secondly Successful students take advantage of extra...

In some cases this may be true because of the lack of knowledge of the available benefits that the colleges have to offer, especially when you’re coming straight out of high school or returning to school years after you have graduated from the 12th grade. But in the foremost case, students usually elect to take the four year University Degree, in some cases this may be wise, but people should give more consideration to attending Community College, because of the ease of attending, the lower cost and the flexibility of the classes. One of the best things is there are no enrollment essays to submit for admissions like you have in your Universities like Harvard or UNC. The test scores whether high or low still allow you to attend the school at different levels until you achieve the college course status. Then there is registration which is very easy with its open admissions policy that allows all to attend and achieve successfully. Another good thing about attending Community College is the residence cost for each credit hour is lower that the Universities. With the cost of living this is a plus for State residence. Successful Students

...Tips for Successful Students Throughout my whole life, I can always remember time management being a strong point, whether it be in school or work. The statement, “you will either control time or be controlled by it” (Lake, A. & von Baeyer, C. 2005) has always lingered in the back of my mind, as my parents would say this to me often when trying to balance life, school, and work. Having a strong sense of time management has given me the ability to balance whatever it is I am confronted with. Whether it be finding time to do school assignments while working full time and also continuing my busy life, or whether it be passing meds, doing dressing changes, placing a foley, and admitting a patient all within a busy hour, time management is essential. Not only does it allow for a less-stressful flow, it also allows me to accomplish my tasks in a timely fashion and feel organized and in-control of what I am doing. I feel having this characteristic as a strong point will help me in this course because not only do I work full-time at night, but I also- like most other students- have a busy life surrounding me as well. Being able to manage what is laid out in front of me will assist in me being a successful student, without neglecting work or my personal life. Procrastination isn’t in the equation for being successful, as leaving tasks for later can lead to mistakes or to be forgotten. Scheduling your time can only be done by you; Do it wisely. Successful Tips on Becoming a Successful Student

...As I read Lake, A., & Von Baeyer, C. (2005). article, " Tips for Successful Students. " Retreived fromhttp://homepage.usask.ca/~clv022/success.htm. I reviewed the characteristics of what it takes to become a successful student, and I feel that most of these traits listed in the article, I possess and utilize in my everyday life, at home, work, with family, friends, and colleagues, but if I had to choose one that is my strongest trait and one that would benefit me in being a successful student throughout this program. Characteristics of Successful Students

...Topic 1: Discussion Question 1 Read Lake and von Baeyer's article, “Tips for Successful Students." Also, review the characteristics of a successful student as explained in the lecture. As you consider these, which is your strongest characteristic? Why? How will this characteristic help you to become a successful student in your program of study? I have always said that I am responsible for my own education. We only get out of school what we put into it. The instructor is there to present the information and provides a framework for understanding. It is my job as a student to fill in the spaces with my own understanding. I can clarify my understanding by asking questions, which I am poor at doing, and by doing research, which I do very well. I am not a good questioner. So, I really feel that my strongest characteristic is my responsibility and accountability. The best instructors I’ve had are the ones deemed “intimidating”. The same is true for my work environment. The best leaders were always a little scary to me. But once I got past the intimidation factor, I found that they actually had the most things to teach me. And that is when I would ask questions! Secondary characteristics that will help me be successful are my time management and note taking. I am forever writing things down. I find that if I hand write something, there is a connection between the writing of the information and my recall of it later. So if I want to remember something, I write it down. That tends...
