The citizens of Millford disapproved Father Hooper’s choice of wearing a black veil over his face because they did not understand it. Instead of letting Hooper live as he pleased and make his own decisions, they attacked him with questions, talked badly of him, and used force to get him to take off his veil. They believed ”the subject had reference to secret sin”and assumed the worst out of Father Hooper’s veil. The people in his town believed he was hiding something dark and that he was so sinful he could not look any of them in the face. Essentially, the towns people were ignorant.
