A day after the United States of America were suddenly deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. Franklin D. Roosevelt made a rhetorical speech that is still heard today. Roosevelt’s speech made rhetorical statements on ethos, pathos. Also some importance on the attack and what has happened on that day. Roosevelt knew that some of his speech had credibility among it. This is ethos one of the three parts of the rhetorical triangle. He uses ethos by talking about “the distance between Hawaii to Japan makes it obvious that the attack was planned many days or even weeks ago.” I think that it is creditable by the founded out information after the attack. Another sign of him using ethos is when he said “As a commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.” Roosevelt knew that some of his speech also has pathos which is another part of the rhetorical triangle. PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points!
