In Triage by James Lafferty, the author argues that the military draft is biased, targeting lower-class young men. An obvious way it did so was through the “student deferment that allowed people who could afford to go to college to stay out of the military, or at least put it off.” Poorer young men who couldn’t pay for school had very few other options other than enlisting in the military. As designed, the student deferment also made it much easier for wealthier kids to avoid requirement.
