In Politico artist’s, Matt Wuerker’s Texas Relief cartoon, the smiling image of a stereotypical Texas cowboy is painted by the exaggeration of certain physical features, the contrast of colors, and the creation of large captions. This was created to communicate the foolish nature of the pro-independence Texans who are were being rescued by the federal government. The image contained a patriotic Texan whose smile was greatly enlarged, and was being rescued in a bright red helicopter. The exaggeration of the size of the Texan’s smile indicates his joyous attitude toward being rescued, even if it is in the highlighted government helicopter. Wuerker uses the cowboy to argue that even state government believers recognize the need for big government.
